the new Mayhem record is easily the best they’ve done since de Mysteriis don sathanas, and doesn’t have the weird drum sound that kills lots of modern metal for me. Attila has never sounded better and after a couple listens the albums grown on me a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJPmzTJmLm0

i'm a fan of the "lovely 70's throwback filmed with a green screen backdrop" aesthetic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPvzai_j-jc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX1530GNc6U and i know the sword is barely metal but, bell bottoms and sideburns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9KbmRTgigQ

what can i say, i like the classics, but to me peak rock and roll of any kind is the late 70's/early 80's. the creative highlight of guitar based rock was in that time and while there was good stuff that came after, it was really all downhill from a popular interest standpoint, and much of the rock landscape in the 90's was post-rock commentary like, well, post-rock, and grunge, and deconstructions of and obituaries of rock as a musical tradition. i think the entire metal aesthetic was nailed down with post-sabbath ozzy, then further elaborated on, then deflated. i'm not trve klvt in any way and when i think metal i dont think muscular nords dreaming of valhalla, but stinky nerds snowed into some basement somewhere singing about elves. like this, to me, is the purest metal song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3LvhdFEOqs Mr. Fall Down Terror has a new favorite as of 07:44 on Jan 12, 2020 |

The Sword has progressed into psychedelic rock moreso but their early albums are metal af. Theyre all good. Overall probably my favorite group. The lead guy looks like if Frank Zappa had discovered Dungeons and Dragons instead of guitars. Although thanks to whoever posted Zeal and Ardor I might have a new favorite group because holy poo poo this is amazing. luxury handset posted:what can i say, i like the classics, but to me peak rock and roll of any kind is the late 70's/early 80's. the creative highlight of guitar based rock was in that time and while there was good stuff that came after, it was really all downhill from a popular interest standpoint, and much of the rock landscape in the 90's was post-rock commentary like, well, post-rock, and grunge, and deconstructions of and obituaries of rock as a musical tradition. i think the entire metal aesthetic was nailed down with post-sabbath ozzy, then further elaborated on, then deflated. i'm not trve klvt in any way and when i think metal i dont think muscular nords dreaming of valhalla, but stinky nerds snowed into some basement somewhere singing about elves. like this, to me, is the purest metal song youd like Blood Ceremony I think, they're not really METAL but they absolutely nail that 70s black sabbath aesthetic. they feel like a band created to make soundtracks to a hammer horror film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRJwTS_2M5M purple death ray has a new favorite as of 14:02 on Jan 12, 2020 |

I haven't listened to much metal over the last few years, but I'm always keeping my eye on Beyond Creation. Their latest album is really loving good tech death metal with cool dystopian overtones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYPGbsgapiQ Otherwise, I've always had a lot of love for Repugnant's 2006 album Epitome of Darkness. Shame they split up right afterwards. It's nothing fancy, just 40 minutes of insanity and sick riffing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeoucynM6as

Here’s a song I’ve been listening to on repeat for a while: Strange Gateways Beckon by Tribulation. Vibe is a bit like early Paradise Lost, who I also love. https://youtu.be/TNZgqxAxaj4 I’m bummed that I missed them opening for Ghost, but I couldn’t get there in time.

Bathory’s third and fourth albums - Under the Sign of the Black Mark and Blood Fire Death - are rightly considered classics, but Hammerheart is an underrated and very well written record that laid the groundwork for the (overall lame) genre of Viking Metal. I did some synth work on a crust band’s 7” a while back and was super stoked when the guys asked if I’d been listening to Bathory lately, because I had and I am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YivCnFkjd8U
