This is the forum for Debate and Discussion! Current events, regional political discussions, general political discussions, and controversial issues are all welcome here. All general forums rules apply. The purpose of D&D is educational. Posters are encouraged to ask questions, share knowledge, learn new things, and speculate, discuss, and argue interpretations and ideas. The hope is that participation here will make posters better informed, develop more refined personal ideologies, be better able to argue their positions in real life, and find ways to put their positions into practice with real world activism. The purpose of D&D is NOT to win arguments. Something Awful is one small corner of the internet, and debating here should not be confused for activism. Posting does not affect real world politics, but it does affect posters themselves and the sort of community we maintain. So, while people understandably have strong opinions and frequently get heated when discussing politics, we ask you to remain constructive and informative, and remember that there are real human beings behind every post. Finally, D&D and Something Awful as a whole hopes to foster a community of casual good humor and camaraderie. Posters are asked to interact with the mutual respect of friends or acquaintances, rather than the forced respectability of strangers, and to maintain a sense of humor, even and especially when things are grim. In order to facilitate this, the following additional rules are in effect: ---Post in good faith, and assume others are posting in good faith: Playing devil’s advocate is tiresome; post things you genuinely believe or are curious about. Unless you have ample reason to do so, assume that others also believe what they post, and react accordingly. If you disagree with someone, aim to inform or convince; do not assume malice. If you suspect that someone is trolling, repeating disproved claims, or lying about their positions or facts, disengage gracefully and report them. ---Mean exactly what you say. This ties in with good faith of course, but refers to expressing what you believe in an honest way, rather than whether you have the belief itself. To accomplish this, avoid ambiguous terms, innuendo, and exaggeration; as well as insisting on non-standard definitions. To have a debate, everyone needs to be able to respond to what you're saying, not what they think you might be saying. Communicating clearly helps avoid others thinking you're operating in bad faith. (Added by Koos Group) ---Meet effort with effort: If a poster puts forward a well-developed argument, rebut with a similarly constructed counter argument that meaningfully addresses their points. Note that effort is not a matter of wordcount; it is about fostering a worthwhile dialogue and addressing one another in good faith. In particular, if sources or expertise are cited, counter arguments should critique or counter these, not simply ignore them. ---No white noise cheerleading: If you want to participate in an ongoing debate, contribute more than simple agreement, disagreement, or insults. Expand on stated assertions or rebuttals, or add your own. Remember: posts should be funny, informative, or interesting. Jokes and sarcasm are allowed, on the subjective grounds that they are funny. ---Good discussion requires good information, something that is increasingly hard to come by in the age of 140 character non sequiturs and blogging grifters presenting as experts. Make an effort to vet your sources before you post them, and when you do make sure that you make clear the following: who is the source, what do they have to say, and why should they be considered valid. If you're posting commentary on an article, make the effort to also post the article in question, not just a screenshot of the bit being commented on. It should go without saying, but you should also read articles before you post them; you may be punished if an article doesn't say what you claim it says. ---Ensure your posts add to the discussion in an interesting way. The best posts have information or ideas that are not only new to the reader, but the reader is glad to have because they could be somehow useful. Don't repeat points you've made recently without good reason. Try not to post about posters (superstars though we may be, learning about us isn't likely to help you outside the forums). (Added by Koos Group) Additionally, expanding on some general forum rules: ---In keeping with the SA rules, bigoted statements against users is not permitted. It is technically not against the rules to make arguments with a bigoted implication or conclusion, but these will naturally attract a great deal of scrutiny. This does not include general, philosophical statements about violence's inevitability or desirability, but anything that could land the forums or yourself in legal trouble, such as trying to actually plan violence. Obviously, do not advocate violence against individuals under secret service protection. While the mods don’t have the resources to give our posters all the help they may need, we still want to support those in distress. Contact us, a mental health hotline, or some other form of aid if you are having difficulty coping. Remember that taking a break to refresh yourself can help. ------National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 ------Trevor Project Hotline: 1-866-488-7386 ---D&D moderation makes use of ramping probations. Posters who are frequently probated, especially for the same offenses, will receive harsher punishments than largely well behaved posters. ---These rules are general guidelines, and the mods take a dim view of posters acting as though they are exhaustive. Bad posts are punishable on the Something Awful Forums. ---If you have been banned from a thread: post elsewhere in D&D for a few months, stay out of trouble, then PM a D&D mod to ask to have it lifted. --- Please do not share manifestos or videos from terrorists, such as mass shooters.

Hi folks! I hope everyone's enjoyed the more relaxed D&D over the past few days! I'm really glad to see that people have mostly stayed pleasant and respectful to each other over these past few days even without us breathing down your necks. Things are started to get heated in some threads, though, so I think it's about time to start stepping back in. I don't plan to go punishing people over what they've posted over the past few days, so unless you've posted something really bad or super obnoxious, you don't need to worry about what you did while we weren't watching. Going forward, we're going to be slowly returning to a more normal level of enforcement (unless the deal to sell the forums falls through). Not gonna come down super hard or anything, you all have been absolutely wonderful over this past week and I wanna treat y'all well. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

The mods are not online constantly. We all check reports one or twice a day but this isn't our full time job, and you're not necessarily going to get a response within the hour, or even six. Unless something is a true emergency: doxxing, actionable threads of violence, suicide threats, or posting illegal material, it can wait a bit. Moderation has not failed if a bad poster continues to post for a few hours, and decided it has and starting a dumb riot in the thread might get you punished as well.

can we not shout about the perfidious posters of c-spamm1!!!!!! every time someone sees a tankie take in D&D? who gives a gently caress it's a poo poo take because it's a poo poo take, not because you saw someone post a similar take in a subforum you don't like. this inter-forum rivalry is dumb as hell and i would like to be able to read the two politics forums on this site without every other random loving thread being full of a bunch of dumbasses constantly sniping at each other about petty team bullshit thank you very much if you have a problem with this policy, consult the other D&D mods or the admins if you have a problem with something you saw in C-SPAM, consult the C-SPAM mods or the admins i'm here to read about politics, not to read about petty internet feuds between people who post on the internet twenty hours a day. i know the line is blurring more and more with every passing year, but come the gently caress on (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Given recent circumstances, gonna make some things very clear: 1. Discussing taking violent actions against people or property is not a great idea. This is not the Antifa Action Discussion forum (much to Andy "Milkshake Duck" Ngo's chagrin) , its a comedy forum with a discussion subforum often frequented by people who work in Law enforcement and likely monitored by such. Hi, we see you, ACAB 2. Given recent events, expecting leniency about discussing violent action in a present or future tense is a ban. Period. 3. This does not apply to the discussion around HISTORICAL political violence, since obviously Politics is filled with the stuff. But no "wink wink/nudge nudge" around it. Anything you post here is effectively public, and as we all know, the internet never forgets. Don't be surprised that we're rather risk averse given last weeks crimes.avi events. Even discussing destruction of property is a criminal conspiracy, so you posting it in D&D or any other subforum is a pretty stupid idea, let alone discussing the ways to do it. I made a few (marked) changes to the OP to show this. The top priority now is that what you post be interesting, in good faith, and not discourage discussion on some way.
