What was the first song you remember liking as a kid? And what was the first one you ever hated? So you won't be embarrassed I'll admit that my earliest musical memory was Madonna’s Material Girl. And I didn’t hate it. But before that I'm told I cried every time Eternal Flame by The Bangles played. Still hate that song now.

I never knew how much Time-Life’s Guitar Rock commercials would influence my musical taste. I bought Skynyrds Innyrds because of that commercial and fulfilled my Floridian destiny.

drat you for reminding me Simply Red exists. Cubone posted:do you guys not remember being little kids? I was maybe 3 years old at the time of the Madonna incident. I guess my young mind found a song about consumerism memorable in a way that a song about a philanthropic sheep was not.

I wonder what bizarre quirk of forum etiquette (or chaos theory) determines why some threads about music devolve into a morass of youtube links that no one can be bothered to click on.

Liked: Discounting the standard set of children's songs, probably "Eat It" by Weird Al. Didn't even know it was a parody of MJ until a little while after. Hated: This is going to date me immensely, but I was in middle school around the time "Baby" was popular, and it reviled me - partly because of the "I hate everything popular" mentality of thirteen year olds, but partly because it's just actually bad.

Cubone posted:liked: you are my sunshine If we’re including public domain preschool type songs, “B-I-N-G-O” was my jam. But does any kid actually love those songs beyond it being poo poo every kid ends up exposed to in one way or another? I’m old as gently caress and I have clear memories of being 5 or 6 during the disco era. My grandpa let me play with this cool little transistor radio that had a leather case. I think I used to just randomly twist the knob and listen to stations tuning in and out, but then a particular song jumped out at me. It was Funky Town by Lipps, Inc. That’s the first time I think I really felt a pop song. That and the Star Wars Cantina music. I can’t recall what my actual first hate was, which is strange because there’s a lot of music I hate. I think I hated Bon Jovi but that was middle school.

The first song I remember being obsessed with was Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. These are some weird lyrics for a little kid to sing along with: Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia Up in my bedroom I got up to wash my face When I come back to bed someone's taken my place The first music I remember hating was Michael Jackson, but I'm pretty sure it was just a knee-jerk response to him being my sister's favorite musician.

According to my parents I loved the Beatles and hated the Bee Gees. Some things never change I guess. As far as what I actually remember, the earliest was probably Big Balls by AC/DC, which is soooo funny when you're like 5. The first song I really remember hating was that god drat 867 5309 song. The first time I liked any music it was AC/DC, I got Highway to Hell from a record store. I was already 11 or 12 then, before that I didn't really care about music. I hated anything my sister liked, mostly insipid 90's/early 00's pop music.
