on the one hand, you have stuff like The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head, etc that's trying to be, as one might call it, an actual movie. you still get some pretty incredible shootouts (the ending to The Killer is loving amazing) but they're not really the main focus compared to the story they're being used to tell.

on the other hand, you have stuff like Hard Boiled, Face Off, Hard Target, etc that's almost 100% a formal exercise for him. the plots are relatively thin and are more or less just a way to get from action scene to action scene, but the action scenes really push the envelope of what you can do with that type of scene and balance it out.

personally i like his more serious stuff better, but his more aesthetically-focused stuff is probably more historically important outside of the specific context of HK cinema, since Woo really changed how action movies are made on a fundamental level. without him, stuff like The Raid and John Wick likely wouldn't exist, and it's not his more artsy movies that are responsible for that.

I've seen A Better Tommorrow the most recent of his stuff and I would likely say that one is legitimately a pretty good dramatic film as well as a good action film. You're pretty accurate with the rest of them.
