When you say laser, do you say the A as as in "amplification"? Do you say the E as in "emission"?

laser is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation", and nobody cares because it's pronounced like it's spelled

gif is the same way - it's pronounced with a soft G, and it doesn't matter that the G stands for graphical

Wry and wise,
but also very sexual.

regexps are extremely useful for when you have regular expressions. if you are tricked out by them then try using https://regexr.com, it’s really good - my non technical gf has no problem with them so there’s really no excuse

I would never hire a senior who is terrified of an appropriate use of regexps, much as I wouldn’t hire a junior who is terrified of bash

the most classic argument, bad as always, pretending that telling people "your input data should simply *already* be perfectly formatted clean and prepared" has helped anyone ever.

regexes are nice for searching for names in historical data sets

for example, "paul" is in contemporary danish usually spelled poul. in addition, v/u is a relatively new distinction, so povl/pavl are valid. then there's this weird -ffu- thing that was used for v-like sounds. also letter-doubling, etc.

so \bp[au]f*[vu]+e?l+\b should match pretty much any known historical danish spelling of that name

Also you basically have to know a little regex if you write shell scripts very often
