Basically just be around a lot and don't be too blatantly crazy so when it comes time to pick a new mod for something, somebody says "hey, how about Poster X." Also I used to get a surprising number of recommendation PMs from posters saying we should consider someone else in the forum, and I'm assuming the current admins still do.
