Not just the soundtrack to your favorite sci fi films but also totally original pieces that happen to be about space. To try and spur some discussion Imma post some of my favorites.

Coheed and Cambria: Dark Sentencer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3zm1_JSPOQ

This is a song that takes itself way to seriously by a band that never got over a bad breakup. I love it! It's all about leaving your old love behind to go out into the infinite blackness of space where you won't be able to see her new boyfriend on instagram anymore.

Zager and Evans: In The Year 2525

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yesyhQkYrQM

An old classic. Lotta truth to this song imo, it's about how different life is gonna be once we have used technology to replace all of our need and wants with automated replacements.

Dr Steel: Planet X Marks The Spot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdpP4vOMdoo

Though Dr Steel has long retired to a career of being married and drawing pinup art for horny nerds the world over his message still rings true to me today. This planet is stinky, we should call Rafiki and say "look at the mess you've made", from the first steps we've made from a monkey this planet has gone to the apes. :colbert:

Alternatively both threads can fight to the death. The Sci Fi Orchestral thread can be the referee which will be an easy job because there are no rules only the blood and the passions

This Dawson's Christian which I think is the highlight off the album Carmen Miranda's Ghost a groundwork collection in the genre, but honestly the whole thing is worth checking out

I dearly, dearly love the soundtrack to the Space Pirate Captain Harlock series. It's part of why I love the series so much, despite the show's flaws.

I'll admit, the animation is... not the best. I do love the art style and the broad, theatrical strokes that it plays with, but it's not great sometimes. And the writing is not the best either.

And despite all this, the score is just incredible. It lends tremendous weight to the show. For me, anyway.

The Songs of Distant Earth. Pretty good Arthur C Clarke novel, absolute banger of a Mike Oldfield album.

Nausicaa is really good. The movie soundtrack has all these strings that convey swooping and soaring flight, and the opening theme perfectly balances the melancholy death of the old world with the hopefulness of the new world. There's some interesting early synth in the movie too, but I can't find my favorite track where the soundtrack is screaming out with an ohmu's rage. There's also the image track, that goes into some more non-traditional territory with a more exotic feel. If that sounds vaguely familiar to you, you're probably thinking of Chrono Trigger.

But if postapocalyptic settings aren't what you're looking for in sci-fi, and you want something out in space, FTL is a great for that. It uses a lot of negative space to really get across the feeling of being all alone in the void. You get a couple spacey-sounds, but they echo throughout the void. Things pick up when you get in a fight, and the final battle maintains tension throughout a whole tense slog.
