In a super-well made game, you could argue that it's distinguishing between the two different phases of his career: The early to mid 2000's, when he was known as Ron Artest, he was super-athletic, Defensive Player of the Year, All-Star caliber, and a dude who (if he kept his cool/stayed focused) could legitimately be the player in the arena on a given night. Whereas his last half of his career as "Metta World Peace", he was basically a defensive specialist rotation guy. Same person, but very different player archetypes.

That said, of course, the real answer is that NBA2K is poo poo and probably just farmed out the "fill out player comps" task to some random intern who's never watched basketball and he just typed in a bunch of names from rosters.

After being gone without explanation (but still being on the forums daily) I figured it's time to call it: this thread is, with a bit of a whimper, dead.

Basically, the game rendered itself, well, not unplayable, so much as painful to play. And not in the usual way. I mean the "My assets kept deleting themselves" and "holy poo poo, the first time I try to load a roster page takes several minutes now" kind of a way. In the end, and with every real world player gone, it just seemed like too much work. To anyone who followed this thread I'm sorry I didn't say anything sooner.

However, part of that is because I wanted to also announce the creation of a new basketball simulation thread, and the time to do so is now, my friends.

It's Basketball GM

Outside the confines of linear time, I will be running a spectator mode simulation of a custom league where every single player and draft pick is a completely random NBA or ABA player from history. Will a draft class have six hall of famers or a bunch of one-and-done nobodies? Will sons play before their fathers? Against their fathers? What other surprises could be in store?

Cryptically, I will say that if you're a fan of Chris Paul or O.J. Mayo, you're probably gonna have a good time.

Whether or not any of you join me in my new thread, I would be remiss if I didn't say thank you to everyone who followed this silly vanity project. I had wanted to take a crack at an LP like the Honu for some time, and I think it's safe to say that, while I didn't come close to accomplishing the 80 seasons before everything went tits up, as far as our primary goal of "being more historically relevant than the Ravens" and then our stretch goal of "Actually, let's be more relevant than every other team" were concerned, we were a stunning success. On that last update, I mentioned how we were finally at the top of all three power rankings for the first time----well, at least one of the three is heavily weighted toward historical importance. Basically, before we took over, it was always the Lakers and Celtics. (Somewhat amusingly, it's 2k's own power rankings that the game decides is the stupid one) By securing the preseason number 1 power rank on the 2k board, the game tacitly acknowledged that we had supplanted everyone else as the most important franchise in the league.

Also, some of the generated characters we came to celebrate during this thread might make good easter eggs in the new thread, you know? Perhaps in another lifetime, the Honu will Endure once again. One day.

Thanks for keeping me sane and giving me something distracting to do during probably the worst year in nearly a century, and certainly the worst year of my life, personally. Much love and respect.
