The game still leads you by the nose for a good long while too. Hell who here in the thread even understands what the mystery in question is or why we are here? I wouldn't be surprised if people forgot in between the stilted wording and the absolute length of the chapters.

Uh, I think there's some sort of crazy-making psychic parasite/disease and we're supposed to be tracking down Patient Zero or Typhoid Mary?

This LP piqued my interest and after reading a synopsis it sounded like some sort of Ace Attorney VS JENOVA so I got myself a cheap copy and today I finished it.

I won't go into details yet because of the spoiler policy, but it's an understatement that I might have overhyped it a bit. It's certainly a weird game and wouldn't go around recommending it but I don't regret playing it. Going to follow this to get your impressions.

KNEEL BEFORE THE WICKED KING!
Hi, hello, this is a very Not Dead Yet post. I've been distracting myself with a much more fun game in Dragon Quest XI S for the past... while. Long, long while. :sweatdrop:

Now that I've basically finished that, I should be able to work on this more often. No update yet, and maybe not for a little bit. Gonna try and get a bit of a backlog first, though. Y'know just in case.

A lot of the episode titles seem kinda arbitrary, honestly. We're 3 for 3 at it being technically relevant but only in vague loose terms. Case in point, Nocturne here is clearly being used for its artistic meaning - a painting of scenery at night. How relevant is it gonna be to this episode of the game specifically? Well...

FORT

Okay, let's start the briefing.
I'll report on what I found on Arthur Mays.
I found something he said about six months ago.
He was asked about "beauty" in a magazine interview.
Here's what he said:

"Until now, I had no time for natural beauty.
I never thought of that kind of thing as art."
"But six months ago, I had a profound experience."

"So much, that I couldn't paint a thing for a month."
This interview is six months old, so that was a year ago.

I'll check other articles about him.
I want you to contact that Shinji Naruse kid.

I'll hack his home PC as soon as I get your report.
Okay, good luck!

Malum

He looks around and knocks softly on the door to the building.

He notices Atsuki watching him and turns around. It's Ryo Unami.

At first he turns away but, upon realizing it's someone he knows, he turns back.

I guess you moved in next door, huh?
I should've asked for your address yesterday.
We're neighbors now, let's try to get along!

You're really studious!
Well, I can understand.
I like school in the morning. It's relaxing.
I haven't gone so early in a while...
Ah, but... this...
You're not going yet?

Oddly enough, our alternative option here is asking what the problem is. Picking that nets an affection decrease. I don't even know sometimes.

I'd like to, but, um... My bag's inside the shop.
It's the old bookstore I got from my grandpa.

When I took out the garbage, I got locked out...
I even left the key inside.
God, what am I going to do?
I'm so embarrassed.
I hate mornings...
The blood doesn't... flow to my brain.
Ugh...

A girl's voice comes from inside the shop.

Ah, there's Ai. Kinda. She'll never appear on-screen during the main game, but does in the Archive sidestory stuff. Weird decision but whatever.

Ah, yes!
Sorry Handa, I'm outside. Can you open the door?

Thanks for the help.
Sorry I'm so scattered. Not a very good way to start the day, huh?
I'll be careful from now on.
This'll take some time, you go on ahead.
See you later.

All of one option for where to go right now. Better do the obvious thing then...

Sky Blue

And watch today's news broadcast! :v:

Osaka, Japan: Large group of rats found as raw sewage flows into river. Rats swarm downtown; traffic paralyzed. Recovery efforts continue.

S-land Inst. of Sci. believes U.S. already has human cloning technology; firmly protests.

Japan: SDF Troops join peace-keeping forces; national assembly in chaos. P.M. Yashiro extends session: "Must investigate." Some legislators announce coalition end.

October is here. Today's high temperature: about 86 degrees.
Polar ice caps in danger:

The news is pretty grim lately.
The Criminal Correction Bill has finally passed.

And yet she gets super chipper about this. That's worrying.

Vital questions about the law remain undecided.
It passed due to many recent mysterious crimes.

by the Lithog Method: detection of a specific hormone.
When America did this

Pretty sure there's no alternative universe where this could ever be true.

If I tested positive for this hormone,
should I worry?
But throughout history, every human society
has known violent crime.
Maybe the new law will change this forever.
I hope everyone will give this some serious thought.

I hope not, because it's some hosed up nonsense that's bordering on eugenics. It' just another systemtic way to oppress people for irrelevant nonsense. There's no such thing as a hormone that makes people commit violent crimes.

Until next time, then. See you again.

...So, anyway, let's go from that to the introduction of one of my least favourite characters in the game! Oh boy!

Heat

He's watching the students with a piercing gaze.

The students walk by him, apparently terrified.

Atsuki tells him his name.

Ah, you're Saijo, huh?

Yeah, this guy's our homeroom teacher. And also a math teacher.

You were supposed to transfer yesterday, right?
I was out yesterday, so this is our first meeting.
Okay... I'll tell you the things I hate.

Peple who use their own weaknesses to get ahead.
Who have no power to survive, but want "rights".
I HATE people like that!

Yep. This is really happening. This is Yamato.

I'm sure this seemed unfeasible in 2008, but sadly that's not the world we live in any more. :sigh:

At least he's blatantly not meant to be likable or anything. Even the music here is telling us this guy is Bad News.

There's a problem with people just not getting it.
If you're gonna be in my class,
forget about being spoiled or whatever. Got it?

Bucolica

Yep, we just dive from there straight into literature class. I'm kinda okay with that, since any transition would be jarring anyway.

Yayoi, who is the author of this book?
Akutagawa Ryunosuke.
Correct! I figured you must have prepared.
Uh... actually no.
Next up, Mika!
Alright, I'll do it.

A man was avoiding the rain under the rashoumon.
The man is alone under the huge gate.
There is only some... I don't know that word!

This is so hard!
Hahahaha! Mika, you are too funny!
Why?
Simmer down.
Shinji is up next! Please keep translating.

Malum

Both Mika and Shinji,
Please prepare your translations for next week!
Noooo!!!

Can't fault that logic.

And don't use the computer.
No!
Alright then! Have a nice lunch!

Lux de Luna

Only two places to go right now. We'll visit Shinji in a second, but first we have mail!

Just the one, but it's Nami telling us something that is pretty important. Might have to go see what she's up to once we're done here...

Malum

But first, we've gotta check in on Shinji.

One of them is typing on the keyboard with amazing speed.

It was Shinji Naruse.

It's no trouble at all.
This is just a public library database.
The personnel password is required, but I know it.

He appears to be looking something up for the girl sitting next to him.

Okay! All done! The data's been transferred.

It's not immediately obvious, but you can tell that this is the girl speaking because her mouth has moved into more of a slight smile.

Don't worry about it. I enjoy this type of thing.

You've been staring at me, can I help you?

Ah great, we've been rumbled and have to interact with the scene now. Welp, let's get to it then.

So, here's the thing with Shinji right here. That Talk option? Terrible. Terrible idea. Don't do it!

...Let's do it!

Talk

You wanna ask me something, right?
You were staring at me. You must have something.

We can repeat this three more times with him getting increasingly more dismissive and liking us even less with each attempt. It's not really noteworthy beyond that.

Memory still can't be used, so that leaves us with this.

Yeah, you were there, huh?

Some reference data I had sent from my home PC.
Hm, what?
You look mad or something. Is something wrong?

Very easy single Worm here. Not much to it, really.

Whisper

Malum

Shinji snaps his tongue and leaves the PC room.

FORT

it seems he didn't have any useful information, huh?
The suicide spot changed but it doesn't say where to and it's not made any clearer who the members are.
We can't afford to take any risks, so

He may get some kind of new information, so keep an eye on him, okay?

Only one place left to go, so let's head on over.

Sunny Spot

I heard you just came back from abroad. That true?
Yeah, I was living elsewhere.

Wow, no kidding? You must be totally bilingual.
Do you know any good foreign jokes?
Haha, well, I'm kind of bad at jokes in general.

A boy with dyed blond hair said this while peering into the room.

Ah, my favourite: unattributed dialogue. It's pretty clear that the top is Takuya and the bottom is Blond Boy, but the lack of proper punctuation is not going to help. I'll at least add that much.

"Um... Uh... Okay..."

Takuya turned pale as he left the room.

Atsuki saw the worried look on Takuya's face and decided to follow him.

Dark Noise

"Hey twerp, why weren't you here yesterday? Don't tell me you were in the nurse's office again."

"Uh, well, of course not..."

"Oh yeah? I don't buy that. I bet you went and squealed to the teacher again, didn't ya?"

Hearing this, Takuya's face tenses up. His expression changed only for a moment, but the bully took notice.

"You little... We were supposed to meet up! So, you just break promises like that, huh? You know what happens..."

"Oh... My..."

It's kinda hard to tell from the audio balancing here, but Akira is voiced in this scene. Unsurprisingly, he is the only one that applies to. This is not confusing or annoying, don't be silly.

"Huh? What, Mido!? I'm kinda busy right now..."

"Oh yeah? Well I'M kinda in a lousy mood right now!"

"Pfft... Please. Why should I give a drat about your mood?"

"That's fine, you don't have to care. I'll just knock your teeth out!"

".........drat."

The blond boy, with a disheveled, defeated look on his face, glared at Akira as he went away.

Bucolica

Eh, no prob. I just didn't care much for that jerk.
Don't sweat it.
Wow, Mido really does have a strong sense of justice.
What in... What the heck are you on about?

That pansy... Just need one punch to do the job.
Hey, what...
Well, don't get into any trouble for my sake.
That idiotic look on his face... Disgusting!
Uh... I don't feel so good...

Well, clearly not considering he literally just said as much but y'know whatever.

Scene ends and we've got three more places to go now. Seems like a busy morning but we've an unfortunate catch here.

We could go visit Mika at the cafe, but we've only got a two "turn" (for want of a better word) time limit to get that done.

We could visit Yayoi in the Art Room, but she also has two chances before becoming unavailable.

And Honoka in her office has the exact same thing too! Since this is our proper introduction to time management, insofar as it exists here, we don't have a particularly tough decision to make or anything.

As a tutorial, these really really do not matter much. Later on, these begin to actually mean things. Not much later either, but let's not get ahead of ourself. First up is Yayoi!

Sunny Spot

She's talking to herself as she mixes the paint on the palette.

"Should I finish it before he gets back...? Ah, Saijo!"

For some reason, this scene is voiced. It's not worth worrying about because it takes like 40 seconds to get through it.

It's nice and quiet here; sometimes I eat alone.
Plus it gives me time to think about the painting I'm working on.
It's almost finished.
But I don't know if I should continue or not.
I'd like to have Arthur look at it for me,

and I just can't decide what to do.
Well, I can't just give up on it. I'll work a bit more.

This is why I'd recommend doing Yayoi's scene here, honestly. It's debatable how useful levels even are, sure, but I'd rather have 500 EXP for literally nothing just in case.

Mika or Honoka isn't much of a choice either, in practice. We'll go with Mika.

Bucolica

Unlike the previous scene, this one is not voiced. Consistency? What consistency?

Oh, I'm so jealous... You're sparkling beauty,
and Yayoi's hair is so silky... and long

It's sad when, in hindsight, this is a relatively minor screw up. Gonna be seeing much worse before too long.

It was to your shoulders back in elementary school.
Uh, no thanks.
The trimming and care, my hair would be mess. (sic)
Plus, I think I look better with short hair.
Oh, what a coincidence!
Saijooo! Come over here a sec!

What hairstyle do you like?

Despite the way the question is posed, the framing and options make it obvious that it's asking who you like better out of Yayoi, Rui and Mika.

Inexplicably, this has a wrong answer. If you choose Mika short hair, Rui has no reaction and Mika's affection goes down! The other two share a response but it's an actual positive.

Softly curled.

Huh?
Haha, that got you, huh?

Can I get a do-over? Maybe? I just picked it for the free points but I'm definitely regretting it here.

What do you mean by "overly sexy"?
Mine's too short, is isn't sexy at all, is it?
I want my hair like Rui's, too.
It's nothing special...
Hahaha, don't blush now!
I'm NOT blushing! Gawd!

Phone starts to ring, but it's not ours for once.

Ah! I'm sorry!

The news she gathers gets coverage on Seagull.
Normally she acts kind of dumb, but...

What's wrong?
I've been called to work.
By who?
One of my contacts.

So, as always, you're gonna cut out then, huh?
Sorry... Tell the teacher for me.
Okay, okay, okay, but we've got Mr. Yamato next, right?
You'll really get it tomorrow.
I'm prepared...

Y'know you say that, but I don't think it's true...

I gotta go now or I won't get there in time!

Atsuki wonders what that caller could have said.

All it takes is one simple Residual Shinen to find out. The general gist of it, at least, even if it's not overtly specific.

Mystic

Hm, a couple of interesting little bits in there. One line especially stands out, to me, and could be interpreted a few ways...

Bucolica

Be careful not to get caught by a teacher!

Between perhaps some low-key relevant info courtesy of that phone call and this bonus 500 EXP, I'd consider Mika's scene here one you should definitely do.

I skipped Honoka's because, well, you don't get the bonus EXP from it and I'm petty like that. :v:

Only one option available to us now, so let's go visit Aoi at the Quad.

Sunny Spot

Aoi Matsumura is looking at the flowers and singing an old love song, while thinking deeply about something.

"...oh, Saijo?"

Aoi is embarassed from having been seen singing so enthusiastically by Atsuki.

Don't you get lonely when Autumn comes?
You live by yourself, right?
I've been living on my own for several years now, but when Autumn comes, I somehow feel lonely.
But I really love this melancholy time of year.
Look at this flowerbed. It only feels this way now.

We-well...
Where are you going, Naruse?

Once again, because this game is presently consistent in nothing but its own inconsistency... Shinji is voiced in this scene. Yeah.

N-no! Come back here!

Shinji stops as he tries to open the gate.

"I have an errand to run.."

No! I can't let you leave!

"Okaaay..."

No! Did Mr. Yamato say it's ok?
You need permission!

...Now that we've actually met Yamato, we know this is complete bollocks. We could've guessed anyway, because Shinji is pretty sketch, but Yamato's whole... Yamato-ness makes it really obvious.

Oh, really? Well in that case, it's okay.
Be careful, alright?

And yet, somehow, it worked?! Has Aoi ever met Yamato?

I will! Well, I'm off!
Oh, and Naruse! Did you turn in the permission slip?

"I think so!"

Ah! Na-Na-Naruse!!

Full of poo poo but getting away with it?

Aoi's tone showed a certain kindness towards Shinji.

...but did he really get permission?
I'm sorry, Saijo. I have to go see Mr. Yamato.
Let's have a longer chat next time.
Goodbye, Saijo.

And so, as the bell rings, we finally transition to...

Whisper

You have no right to choose when you come to school!
You think you can decide this on your own?

Got it, Atsuki?
Don't think I'll be nice just because you're new.
Be careful. I don't like the way you look.
Now, open your books.

Remember, this guy teaches math! You think you'd want a teacher who can make kids like math, because it's super important!

If you do this, we won't have any problems.
Solve the problems we went over today.
You have five days, so you better be prepared.
Try harder.

God, he's only been in two scenes but they do a good job at making him utterly detestable anyway.

Plus side: we're mostly done with school for the day already too. The quicker we wrap up our investigation here, the better.

KNEEL BEFORE THE WICKED KING!

Two more spots to check out. Definitely start with Aoi, because the other location is conspicuously empty.

Kisaragi

"Ah, Saijo!"

I asked Mr. Yamato, and he didn't get permission.
That kid!
I'm gonna have a talk with him when he comes tomorrow!
I need to set some time aside and talk to him!
Haah, seriously...

His grades are excellent.
Plus he's curious and tries hard at everything.

I've got to put a stop to this behaviour...
Haah... I'm a bad teacher...

Aoi hangs her head.

Atsuki can tell that she really cares about Shinji.

She may know something else as well.

Gotta have a bit of a chat with Aoi, huh? Might as well just Talk for now.

If so, please don't worry about him.
I'll do something about it.

Memory still doesn't do anything, so we'll just ask Aoi about...

Suicide Case

It's sad, but I heard a teacher was involved, too.
Don't consider suicide. If you need help, I'll listen.
Sometimes it helps just to talk to someone.
If it's hard to say, you can even write it in a letter.

Bullying Problem

I keep an eye out, but we can't see everything.
If you see something please let me know, ok?

Pretty obvious that asking about Shinji is how we progress here. Might as well do that now.

Shinji Naruse

I don't think he dislikes school.
Seems he's been hanging out at a new place lately, he's never around, I wonder where he's gone off to...

The Shinen are getting a mite bit tricker now, but it's still not too difficult. It helps that there's just the one at least.

Scare Bell

Kisaragi

I have to prepare for class, excuse me.

Aoi walks back to her desk, sighing.

Now we can go check out the computer room. Saved this one 'til now for a simple reason.

It's completely empty and all we have here is a singular Residual Shinen to collect.

But it is a doozy:

Dark Noise

Noir

That PC was the one the suicide members mailed last night.
Residual Shien tells me Yamato was somehow involved.
I need to tell FORT about the connection.
But 1 mystery: his behaviour this morning.
Would someone thinking of suicide show such anger like that?
Either way, I need to check up on him.

We'll get to telling our superiors about this very obvious lead later. Sure wasted no time with Yamato though, huh, he's back, he's an absolute bellend, and also he might be plot relevant now.

Meanwhile, Takuya is here and we only have one chance to talk to him. Let's do that then.

Bucolica

Sorry about yesterday. The notebook...
It's full of stuff I'd rather not show people.
Like those guys today, people will tease me...
So I write it in there.
I write about stuff I'd do if I were stronger.
It's kinda dark, but it helps me relieve stress.

So, it's... full of revenge fantasies?

Anyway, we get the usual here. Memory doesn't do anything, even though it feels like it really should here.

Talk

You just had a look. I'm not mad anymore.
Just don't tell anyone what you saw, ok?
Of course I believe you won't tell anyone.
And? Is that all?

...Yes, actually. We can't do anything else.

With the Talk option, I mean. Despite having four options, only three of them even really matter here.

Shinji Naruse

Must be nice, being able to make money like him.
You didn't know? He makes thousands every month.

Plays the stock market, like a lot of folks tried to do with Gamestop semi-recently (dating this commentary like its 2021, aww yeah).

Just, y'know, buying and selling on a daily basis and requires a degree of actual knowledge about business stuff. Also being a soulless capitalist ghoul may help, I dunno.

I want to try it too, but I don't have the funds.

Info > Shinji Naruse (2)

Right, it's like making a game.
It looks fun. I've never tried it before.
I guess that's about all I know.

Info > Suicide Case

So stupid. When you die, that's it, y'know?
I don't get it.
There may be stuff about the suicides online.
Like the place, the method and the suicide note.
I don't care though.

Info > Bullying Problem

It's nothing really. Right?
Like, those guys who were messing with me today...
Someday they'll grow up and their boss will tease them.
Right now, they're the big fish. Think they're cool.

That's not all, is it?

Technically, I think this one is optional if you don't collect and return his notebook. I think. That might be mandatory, though; I've never not done it as far as I remember. The Shinen itself ties into the bullying thing we saw earlier, though, so it might just change the lead-in.

Dark Noise

Sunny Spot

I figure it'll all come back to them one day.
Oh, drat! Look at the time. Gotta run!
See you later.

Free EXP is always nice, though.

That leaves us with... Yayoi again. Only this time she's extra sad. Apparently.

Sunny Spot

I didn't think anyone would come in.
I was just about to go home.
What's wrong, Saijo?
Can I help you...?

We've gotten a lot from Yayoi really, but Memory? Still does nothing. Talk here is maybe the least straight forward so far.

Talk

I have a little bit more time.

Talk (2 and 3)

Hehe, I told you, ask me anything you want.
It's fine when it's not needed, what's up?

We'll be stopping after 3, but...

quote:

Talk (4)

Um...are you making fun of me?
In that case, I'm leaving now...

Well, we were warned a while back. It is a bit sudden here though.

...Instead, we have a much simpler prospect here.

Like with Takuya, Different Playground is utterly useless. We'll ignore that one.

Shinji Naruse

He's so knowledgeable about computers.
He passed state exams for data processing, and the games he makes are really popular.
I know nothing about computers, so Irespect that.
Yeah, and he's close with Nozaki, too.
He often helps Nozaki with her reporting.
That's about it.

Info > Bullying Problem

Unfortunately, there are a few people here who pick on the weak, that's for certain...
That'll only leave bad memories in adulthood, but they don't get that. I feel sorry for them.
If everyone would try to understand how others feel, I don't think there'd be anymore bullying.
But constantly hoping for that is hard, isn't it?

Perhaps a bit idealistic too, but it's a nice thing to want at least.

Info > Suicide Case

I was so sad when I heard about it.
Must've been so hard, and to die like that...
No one noticed until it was too late, and to think how hard it is being alone... I feel terrible.
I'm so lucky to have such great friends.

Yayoi's eyes show loneliness as she says this.

Memoria

Sunny Spot

Get the 500 EXP regardless of how this resolves, but skipping through Talk has more of a downside. This way works out better, let's be real.

We're done with school for the day too! Tohodo is the only place we can go right now, so that means one thing here.

I suggest he go back & study history once more.
Also, he's got weird hobbies.
He's a gun freak, and according to records we got,

...Why? I'm hardly the best person to comment on this, mind, but this just makes me think either Yamato is wildly incompetent or (more likely) the person who wrote this bit knows nothing about guns.

He goes overseas to firing ranges a few times a year.
He's a real maniac.
You've probably noticed...
but it's hard to connect him with the suicide group.
I doubt someone so active would commit suicide unless

I am going to... VERY politely disagree with this assessment of suicide. It is very misrepresentative, to put it very, very lightly.

But there's nothing like that anywhere. He's clean.
Contacting him is probably faster than speculating...

I'm gonna view Atsuki's place & the next town...
It'll take some time with this wide range, but I'll find where that Yamato guy is, don't worry!
Wait a minute, OK?

We're rapidly moving towards the end of the day. We've got a few things left to do, so we'll try to get through the lot right now. Start off by going to YUZI, because we need to find Shinji, I guess, but also to visit... Nami?

Twilight

Nami gazed at an ominous figure in the design painted on a green wall.

Atsuki saw this, and dashed towards Nami.

So, Nami here is voiced because this game likes to spend its talent on important plot scenes and irrelevant side garbage.

Do ya' think this is gross?

It's so nasty, it makes me want to barf.

...Okay, I may have brought up the voice acting in this scene for a reason other than "why is this voiced?"

Yuzi came to them after hearing the conversation.

...The other-other reason I brought up Nami's voice acting here is Yuzi. Yuzi, naturally, is not voiced.

Pumpkin Pon

Oh, this's your place, huh?
That's right... But I have something I wanna' ask you?
You said something that was bothering me a moment ago.
Bothering you? Ah, yeah, that it's gross.

Nami suddenly going from insulting to inquisitive feels off, doesn't it? Because it is:

Can't you do something about this ugly wall?
Huh? The wall?
Haha... Wait a sec...
Why does a kid like you have to say that?
Because it's gross.
Haha, gross, she says! How impolite to say that.

I honestly feel like I don't need to add anything to this. It's perfection incarnate, really.

Gross things are gross. The color is like a larva.
Next time I'll paint big eye balls for you!
Huh!? Eye balls...?

Nami smiled, and Yuzi stood agape and rushed away before words came to mind.

Yuzi shook his head a few times and left back inside.

We could just leave right now, but we didn't come here for Nami. Though, her disparaging Yuzi for his garbage design taste was nice. We gotta follow Yuzi inside to get more on this Shinji subplot we're apparently doing right now.

Malum

It seems that we've crossed paths a lot today, but does that mean you know something about me?
You can ask me anything.
So, what do you want?

We've not really had grounds to grill Yuzi before, so Memory still being a dud option makes sense here.

Talk

Haha, then welcome!

...This just makes me question how old Yuzi is supposed to be. I figured like mid-20s at most, but who even knows any more.

You saying that talking to me, makes you feel young?
Well, I'm still fairly young, ya' know! Haha!
So, what is it?

Talk (2)

Hm? So you didn't come here to meet with me after all?
No? Then why'd you come?
Didja' come on a field trip?
Hahah, well then, enjoy your time here.

...Okay, fine, Yuzi is the exact kind of dork I can't really bring myself to dislike. He's fine by me.

Even moreso here, because he accidentally respects your time. 3 of these give one-line responses which boil down to him not knowing a thing. Which is cool, I like that.

Different Playground

So, they're really saying that Shinji is coming here?
I haven't heard about that.
Well, even if I did know about that, there's still a matter of confidentiality.
So I think it's best that I say that I don't know.

"Heeeey, manager!"

Ack, terrible timing!

Hm? Can I help you?
I was keeping this stuff confidential... Honestly.
There is no confidentiality at 'Net cafes, is there?
I haven't done anything wrong, so it's fine.
You've become an adult.
Besides, I have some business here today.

I'll fix it up.

...Now, I'm not a tech expert or anything. But! I'm prettty sure that these two things would, in fact, not be remotely the same. At all. Shinji is supposed to be a tech genius (on top of possibly just super smart in general). This makes me think whoever wrote this has never even seen computer.

Anyway, we're done here now. We could check out the BBS, but better not to right now. We'll just leave for now and see where else we can go.

Rainbow Hill is our only spot right now. Ryo's hanging out here this time, so it won't be that bad at least.

Mystic

"Saijo!"

A voice comes from behind.

Ryo is voiced here, but... surprisingly, the voice over is mostly the same as the text.

Do you love this hill, too?
Isn't this such a breathtaking view?
Do you know about this hill's history?

If you're interested, I'll tell you about it.
Yes, please do.

Hm, I guess quiet types tend to be curious, huh...
So this statue, you know why it was made?
I don't know if it's true, but there's a famous legend about it.

Ryo moves to the statue & puts his hand on it.

"Kisaragi City was founded by a foreigner.

That foreigner apparently made this statue, too.

But he was so obsessed with making it, the villagers warned him..."

"He kept working on it constantly.

One day, tragedy struck. He ran into town, screaming and bleeding."

"All that was left was his bloody carcass and the statue he made."

There are, in fact! You can see them in the background of some areas. I'm not gonna point them out, because why would I, but they're a nice bonus to try and spot.

I found this story in an old book.
It's possible the legend dates back even further.
It isn't well known, but isn't it cool?

Oh, look at the time!
I have to get back, or I'm in trouble.
We'll talk more next time.
OK, see you later.

Ryo, apparently in a hurry, almost trips at the entrance, and runs off.

This opens up a whole one more area to go to. We're still quite on-rails, sad to say.

Malum

"Nami, where are you going with Melody today?"

"We'll get burgers and eat them at Rainbow Hill."

"Hehe, you're just the image of freedom, aren't you? I wish I could skip out and go somewhere..."

"You wanna' come, Mako?"

"I'd love to, but I have to stop the bad people..."

Just then, Melody finds Atsuki.

She's so nice!
Melody loves her, too!

He's my sister's friend. His name's Atsuki Saijo.
I think he lives in Area 7, next to Tohodo.
Wow, Nami. You sure got all his info quickly.

Just then, a curvy woman walks out of the police station.

"Maki! What're you doing?

You've got a meeting, right? It's gonna start!"

Oh no, it's a weirdo! Run away, Melody.

He's really angry... You're in trouble...
Oh no... I totally forgot about the meeting.
Thanks, Yui!

Mako takes the notebook and bows her head.

Thanks again. I'm off now.
OK, have a good time.

Mako runs off into the police station. After making sure she makes it inside OK, Yui shows an expression of relief.

Anywaaay...
Are you friends with Mako? I've never seen you before.

She looks Atsuki up and down, with a very stern look.

From Kisaragi School, yeah?
You shouldn't be walking around at this time of day.
Go home before it gets dark. Bye.

That's good advice, but we're still waiting for someth-

FORT

I found the Shinen of that Yamato guy!
It's been confirmed near AMS Bank in Area 2,

Act like nothing's up, and use Sigma as soon as possible!
His Shinen is subconscious, so it may be hard.
Do your best!

So, we've got three places to go when searching for Yamato. Using Natsuki's Viewing here makes finding him easy, and we do want to get to him before that 3 turn timer runs out.

...But we're not off to the bank just yet.

There's something very minor, very irrelevant but very permanently missable at the station.

Sunny Spot

So, there's two distinct and apparent sets of collectible-ish things. Arguably three, but we'll get to that later.

The first are these black QR codes. They always appear in very time limited, highly restricted points. You have one shot to get them before they're gone forever.

They don't exactly
do anything. They're more for... uh, worldbuilding? I guess? This one ties into that story Ryo told us, for example.

So, now that we've wasted one of our three turns, Yamato's moved and we'd need to rescan to find him. Not gonna bother with that, though. He runs in a strict pattern here, you see. He starts at the Bank, then moves to the Police Station before finally going to Kisaragi Station and then leaving and we've missed important content.

There's nothing at the Bank or the Police Station if he's not there, though.

Dark Noise

What are you doing?

Using Sigma, of course.

Yamato

Remember how a little ways back Takuya had his notebook as one? Yeah, Yamato has a (stock image of a) gun as one.

Yuhigaoka House

Dark Noise

Atsuki bows and says "Good afternoon."

That's it?
Go home and study.

FORT

He probably got an email from a suicide group member.
He's not an enemy so they warned him.
But he doesn't think they are on the same side.

It's a bit vague what she means here, but Yamato is a jerk. He enjoys pushing people towards it and seeing the results and after-effects. Not that he enjoys watching the act.

...I hope.

He is really sick.
We will research more about him tomorrow.
We'll figure out how to read his mind.

While this feels like it should be the end of the day, we've got one last little bit left. Off to this arcade called TOY BOX, because... I dunno.

Trigger

"Psh, you coward..."

Two young men were arguing over a game.

Running quickly past the counter one of them was scolded by the manager and rushed outside in anger.

As the other one was heading outside, he began to pass by Atsuki.

Whisper

Why are you there?
You're Atsuki, right?
Sorry about this, but could you come outside with me?

Attitude Problems

Kisaragi

Uh, well... it'd be a bummer if I were found out.
I know it looked like I was picking a fight.
Well, it's not 'cause that guy had a bad attitude.
Weak punks just join forces to beat you up.

And in the end, you have to stand your ground.
They've had an eye at me at school for a while now.

Suddenly, it looked like Akira was gonna' kill you.

It wasn't a normal anger, but a psychotic rage.

Final Shinen of the day, and it's kind of out of nowhere that we came here. Still, pretty okay with this because I reckon it's fairly important.

Cowardly Mind

Noir

Kisaragi

cause of that guy, I've been friggin' warned.
What's up with him letting his stress out on me? drat.
Sorry man, but I gotta' go. Later dude.

End

We're done for the day! All we have to do now is check our text messages.

...And then we can go home.

FORT

You're only in school once, so enjoy it while you can.
Let's go over today's findings.
First, Tadashi Yamato.
He was the one the suicide group sent mail to.
We have to check his mind & see if he's the Original.

We can't eliminate this one just yet.
He's holed up in his house, so we can't use Sigma.
You probably know, but Picus is gathering info, and they've succeeded in infiltrating Kisaragi City.

and he's a weirdo, huh?
He's hacked the President's PC and doctored photos,

and has almost been arrested several times for it.
He's a minor, and a lack of evidence saved him.

No, Nola! It is not safe to say that, at all! It is never safe to say that!

He probably found info on the suicide group.
From there, he may try to interrupt our search, and may become an obstacle, so we have to be careful.
OK, get a good night's sleep. Good luck tomorow.

Since we've finished Episode 2, we get a bit of a bonus. The Archive scenes are weird side-stories. Getting all of them is an exercise in misery, because some are kind of mutually exclusive, so I'm not gonna bother.

I'll get what I get and leave it at that. We'll cover them as/when we get enough for it to be worthwhile. 'Til then, see you next time for episode 3: the one where the plot actually begins for real.

drat I actually missed the scene with the statue I think. And hey, teachers wearing handguns in Japan I'm sure that's fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine not like there are mind parasites around to turn people psychotic!

You cheated not only the game, but yourself.
But most of all, you cheated BABA

There are many reasons why I want an LP of this game, not to play it myself.

Let's start Episode 3, shall we? It's a bit of a lengthy one:

Let's finally introduce a whole new mechanic that I think is really cool!

But also really bad depictions of mental health with regards to OCD, mysophobia and schizophrenia (that sadly only begin here, but continue on-and-off throughout the rest of the game yay...). Probably also a casually racist depiction of a Chinese woman too.

This was a really cool surprise cause you were like "...uh what's "black" mean?" and then "OH SHI-"

so hey how long did it take us to find the first of the mind bugs that makes people go crazy?

I, uh... not really that much in-game time. I'm gonna ignore the real life timespan here. :sweatdrop:

Oh well, happy Wednesday!

I'm assuming it means there's a pattern of insane, bloodthirsty killers leaving residual Shinen due to the depths of their madness.

This game's a peach.

I actually keep forgetting that technically there is missable EXP for all that EXP matters.

Interesting game though I always feel like I'm on the edge of losing the plot.

Are there lots of time saving features for hypothetical new game pluses to get missed scenes?

Not really, no.

Yeah, the NG+ carry over is very limited. There's nothing really given to make things quicker, and you get to keep a quarter of your earned EXP (yay?) and half everyone's Affection (...yep) and... that's it. It's real dumb! I would not recommend trying to max out everything here.

Ah well, something marginally less dumb than that is Almost Anything Else. For example!

Does carrying over affection also carry over the times you made the correct emotional responses? like when you see the arrows on the top screen? Cause those are way more important iirc

EDIT: and yeah some of the more surreal Shinen are great I HEAR THE WINGED BU CALLING ME TO MY HOME IN MY DREAMS

No such luck, unfortunately. It's basically just there to make it so you can get max level fill out the Archive easier, far as I can tell. But, like, not too easily? I guess It's weird.

Imagine I had a good segue here, for:

From natto to rotten beans. Not wrong I guess but that probably would have tripped me up a bit.

I was expecting the MC to have that sort of backstory but not the rear end in a top hat store clerk.

Curiously the sub-titled Japanese for the episode title is 'The song of dusk', which seems not quite correct. This is a bit of a departure for the subtitled text in any case since episodes 0, 1 and 3 were just the transliteration of the English word and Mystery was straightforwardly the kanji for 'mystery'.

The retranslation person mentioned earlier covers the multiple issues with the classroom scenes (no spoilers as long as you don't step outside that particular page)
