i don't have a song to post (i mean of course i do but i'm not on that poo poo right now), but in reggae news on my end:

i have just completed the most crucial steps to making my "The Generic Harder They Come" tape. If you are not familiar with The Harder They Come original soundtrack album, read no further til you get familiar cause it's like the greatest recorded album of all time.

I have designed a double-sided, reversible j-card made of weird versions (hand painted african movie poster, japanese lettering, etc) of the iconic cover art of The Harder They Come soundtrack album, even sticker labels for the cassette itself based on early 70s cassette releases. The track list is identical, down to two versions of You Can Get It If You Really Want like the reprise on the original, with one twist: every song is a cover, version, dub, or other recording. The challenge was finding a cover of every song that wasn't poo poo. For example, we all know Boney M did a version of Rivers or Babylon that is a bloody stool spray. Is there a good version aside from the Melodians original? Yes, if you look harder. Or, how come nobody has covered Sweet and Dandy? Well I found an elementary school choir in Jamaica who did it.

It's a fun project. With the tape case cover insert and label sticker and music sorted out I just need to get my hands on some 40 minute tapes so the A and B sides won't have huge gaps. With the cover art it looks totally officially unofficial.

I understand this is an insanely obscure interest but

a) seriously, that album/movie is the literal historical reason reggae ever made it out of Jamaica so please do check it out if nothing else

b) where else would you share something like this if you were me? I will make copies to meet demand, which I estimate at 2: me and my cousin.

edit: to be clear i will share the finished product here with a pic at very least

OK, I looked into it and it's not expensive to get a custom length blank tape. The real cost is in duplication, which I can do myself in low enough numbers. And postage, but we'll see... worth it if it went to a loving home.

So I tell you what, I'll make more than 2. Anybody else interested in one?

Why not just put it on a regular blank instead of a custom one? Seems easier. Don't go through the trouble just to get me one, I couldn't tell if you were doing more than one in your post. Happy to kick you a few bucks for the trouble and shipping, though :tipshat: I assume you're in the US

I kind of hadn't decided whether I was going to do more when I posted. I'll send one to you too AG. I don't give a FRICK. But you should buy the $10K walkman with your dispensary salary to listen to it.

tapeline.info has new tapes to a custom-wound length (42ish minutes, in this case), for £1.44, using one of the few not-poo poo ferric tape stocks in production now. So a run of ~5 copies is hardly gonna break the bank.

I'm in the UK, but I go to the States often enough (parents and family live there). Usually I go there and collect the tapes and books and crap I've ordered to their house that wasn't worth shipping here, so having a few things with me to offload in exchange will work OK.

It's just a project for me anyway - while I've done mp3 mixes and such, I've never done anything on tape with that kind of effort, so it's kind of just an experiment. I'm happy to send a copy just for the feeling of having it out in the world.

I'll order the bits soon but this is an unhurried situation for an unhurried subforum.

anyway to get back on track, OBMJ (orchestra brasileiro de musica jamaicana), some brazilians doing quincy jones soul bossa nova in reggae style. that's right! i'm posting something not technically recorded in the 60s or 70s! composed in the 60s, sue me.
