I asked my kid sister if she needs birth control. She's a cheerleader and also getting to the age where it might be ignorant to dismiss her being active already. Whereas our dad and her mom are super Catholic. Not my dream conversation topic but it'd be wrong for me to not at least bring it up once on the odd chance she's too embarrassed to bring it up herself. Her: No thanks. I don't like that stuff. Me: ... Her: ... Me: ... Her: No! I mean there are side effects and I don't need it. I'm still too young to deal with the consequences of BC failing so I just don't have sex yet. Me: Oh thank god. Her: You idiot. This generation is super responsible and it's awesome. They think we all have brain damage from lead poisoning looking at the stupid risks we take when it comes to sex and drugs and driving motorcycles or getting sketchy tattoos. I have fallen in love with high CBD vape cartridges for my Pax Era. The device is basically Juul for weed and made by the same company. All the available cartridges have too much THC to be legal anywhere I want to work in Europe and I'm returning there either August or September. But like I think I can just bring a bunch in my luggage. The chances of them searching me are so low. And I can just lie and say they are CBD only. Worst case they just let me throw it out in the garbage. They'll let me do it to avoid the paperwork and the expense of actually testing the stuff. My socioeconomic status is so high I am one step away from blowing up with privilege. Like 10% chance my lawyer could actually bring in a senator to clear things up for me. The risk of any serious consequences are almost non-existant. Bright Bart fucked around with this message at 02:08 on Jul 22, 2020 |

During the first New Jersey COVID pop in April I went out walking/hiking/cycling a lot, and man it was amazing how quickly nature bounced back once people went away. The sidewalks were lined with chipmunks and there were deer and foxes just wandering around everywhere, so even though I was pretty nervous about the whole pandemic thing I would up smiling whenever I went outside and really just enjoying myself in nature. There was a weird dissonance between my pessimism and optimism in those moments, but it still makes me feel good to think about all them little chipmunks just running everywhere. |

Not to dwell on the topic and it feels like a jerk move to brag since I think everyone should be allowed to be treated super well by the authorities but being a respected professional who the police and such treat as their social better is super fun. I once brought ketamine over to Europe when starting a semester. Luggage got searched because of something coming up on the screen like a bottle with too much liquid or something, Suspicious crystalline shards in an unmarked pill bottle raised an eyebrow for like half a second. I just get asked "medicien?" and answer "Oui, mai jusque une etudiant" and I'm clear on my way. I was caught illegally ordering ketamine when a parcel was intercepted and the police only asked for a witness statement, actually insisting I not incriminate myself or force them to do anything. They outright wanted me to make a plausible excuse where I say I had a prescription and they promised they wouldn't check. I was a witness to my own possession of drugs where I had to plead dumb and be like yeah I saw a package of drugs I ordered them but I did not illegally posses them if that makes sense? They didn't want to charge me. Literally apologized for taking up my valuable time and were super polite. I guess I should feel bad for not trying harder. I imagine if they did mess up my career over this I should feel super guilty not only for ruining prospects others would do anything for and also letting down the people I could help. But like I see truly heartbreaking things and feel the need to be euphoric once in a while in order to come into work the next day. It's really up to society if they want me in the hospital or in prison. So it's like on them at this point. No probation please I promise I am done with annoying megalomania for a while. i have this weird idea that maybe finally the bad generation is going away and my generation will start to become the boomers positions of power. certainly bad eggs in my gen, but we all grew up with the internet while watching the country slip into its current state, screaming all the while. if my generation, at 18, had all voted and enacted their will, the world would be so much better right now. I remember being that age and people saying "once you get out into the REAL World you'll change your tune" but I've been soaking my butt in the real world for well over a decade now and I basically had all the right ideas back then. to be completely honest, i think the next 4 years of bad mans in bad office will be something that might tear the country or its people apart more, and frankly in a lot of ways, i would really enjoy a fresh start. Our constitution sucks, always, that's why they almost immediately needed to start changing and adding poo poo to it. It's based on an outdated notion of only somer types of wealthy white men being able to own poo poo and vote and have all the rights. We've patched it up now and then, but come on, that poo poo was written by a bunch of dudes in a rush in some weird room in colonial times who had a lot of bad ideas about philosophy, science, and the world, just poo poo from their times. We can do better and keep the malleability of the thing, just seems a long time coming. System is broken now, forefathers never planned for a corrupt two party system with an aggressively and malicious treasonous president remaining in power without rebuke. Can't fault them for that, nobody could predeict anyone making such a colossally stupid voting decision in the first place, but here we are. sorry op i am just rambling tl:dr: my generation and the next want a better new deal and we are all sick of the poo poo one we were given and we can all see how to fix it so we can start doing it once all the bad boomers go away. |

Boomers are just so lucky that instead of having them spend the rest of their miserable lives in prison or dilapidated retirnment homes as punishment we kind of want to fix longe-term care so they'll actually get treated better by us than they treat each other.Khanstant posted:"once you get out into the REAL World you'll change your tune" but I've been soaking my butt in the real world for well over a decade now and I basically had all the right ideas back then. Yeah, lol. It's like "I'll stop being a kind human being and become a selfish, ignorant jerk who's proud of their selfishness and ignorance? Okay... But like we don't have lead poisoning degenerating our brains despite your best efforts to poison our water supply so I have my doubts". My generation still isn't the best though. At least some still view Wall Street and American Psycho as inspirational. We don't use the N-word or make fun of LQBTQ+ people much anymore but like we did you know? And we still like to talk about getting laid and doing drugs. The actual young generation talks about like "Maybe we should plant some trees and also eat healthier and a bit less meat you know? And improve public education and make college free and provide healthcare to everybody and be nice to each other." Hopefully this doesn't count as political since not sure how wanting the world to be a better place could be too divisive or radical. I really cringe to think of how long my teen self held on to being able to say the "f" word, while with the same mouth arguing for gay-rights and stuff and I really hope teens today deal with that poo poo way less. I suppose as I've aged I've only kept peers who were good people, and good people don't say that poo poo or support certain things. I can't deny there are also a ton of kids I went to highschool who wound up being redcap shitbirds, many with baby shitbirds they created who will hopefully grow into much better birds than their parents, as so many of us have done. Gen X is also a mixed bag, looking at just my own og bio parents, my mom is a good woman with good morals but my dad is genuinely trying his best to become a better person but seems unable or unwilling to take the leap out from circling the conservative abyss whirlpool. I will say Gen X and Millennials have way too high a proportion of people poisoned against socialism, but the consequences and downside of capitalism have become so dire they're becoming impossible to ignore and I really think the Gen Z kids and their kids will finally be the muscle to outvote the dipshits and let us take the first step towards the gay space communism we all deserve |

Oh, drat, this thread went places I have not seen coming. I mean, I maybe should have actually, but I assumed it would turn into something less serious. Anyways, serious stuff is fine, but talking about the generational responsibility of any generation, young or old one, is imo very political and also quite controversial, as we can somewhat see already. An important topic, no questions about it, but not one we'd like to dig into here, in BYOB, the chill and fun forum for all generations' posting needs. Now, to the question of pebbles and why they are always optimistic, cda has prepared a TED talk about this, let's hear it!

Obviously the political climate is dampening enthusiasm of those members of the younger generation that grew up there who haven't travelled much lately: they haven't really seen how populism is having a moment all over the place. But it really depends on your situation and also where you're coming from. Salary is definitely lower than the US. On the other hand a nice job means you can live like royalty if you're single. And conversely the living standards when you have a cruddy job are probably the same throughout the developed world. I have some people working at McDonald's asking me how to move to Canada or the United States. When I ask why they say they want to make more money. I tell them okay but you realize it's not like Friends where people who work in coffee shops can afford Manhattan condos or a huge house in the suburbs. If you're working at McDonald's and sharing a dilapidated flat, struggling to pay your bills in Poland you're likely going to find yourself similar circumstances working at McDonald's in Chicago. Each EU country has its pluses and minuses though. The nice part is if you have citizenship you can travel so easily. And even without moving you can sometimes find affordable tickets to fly out in the morning, chill on a Spanish beach for a day, and fly back home in the evening all for the price of admission, soda, and popcorn at a downtown movie theatre. Personally I can't imagine living anywhere other than Europe. Bright Bart fucked around with this message at 14:29 on Jul 27, 2020 |

No worries, I wouldn't want to probe anyone for the politics rule, also think so far we truly never did before either! It's just that BYOB is a chill place of peace and happiness and political discussions - while without any question vitally important - conflict with that, so we rather point towards the political forums and subforums like D&D and C-SPAM for discussions about those things, they are better equipped for it. No hard feelings or anything, though, I totally get it, feel free to move over to talk about that. Hell, I can even offer you moving the entire thread over if you'd like, I'm sure there are a lot of folks open to talk about what makes them optimistic!

Thank you for the considerate offer GAG. But it's a silly thread where the fact of any topics being serious is entirely coincidental. I presume they are, all of them, being discussed in various threads or on other forums already. Plus like "okay boomer you don't have to kick the bucket but you can't stay here" as well as "I get to do drugs because I am upper-middle class and that seems unfair" are hardly eloquent treatments of their subject matter. :P Bright Bart fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Jul 31, 2020 |

my city hasn't been hit by covid quite as bad as other places, but one thing I've noticed is that for the most part there seems to be a much stronger sense of community and people tend to be more respectful and helpful to each other. people are undergoing a massive shared experience and while covid really, really sucks in so many ways, it feels like humanity might come out of it stronger and more empathetic than before. I hope so anyway. also I guess on the other hand I've heard/seen way more quarantined-fueled pissing matches in the lawn of my apartment building over the last several months than ever before, but eh. cautionary tale there |
