It's February, and a new month comes with a new theme. This time will be Sci-Fi, a whole month of it! And potentially more, as many of you messaged me a ton of suggestions to watch when the idea was taking form a few days ago. We'll be revealing Saturday's film and preshow series in a moment, but right now we'll be introducing something new: a weekly stream every Monday night to watch Urasawa's Pluto, a miniseries in the form of eight episodes.  This is a real cool, high budget adaptation of a sci-fi crime mystery manga and if you have never heard of it, I hope you'll give it a chance to be pleasantly surprised. The first episode kicks off on February 5, at 4:00 pm PST / 7:00 pm EST / 00:00 UTC, same place as usual (BYOB Discord, C&D Movies channel). |

This Wednesday, before we get to the heavier, slower work of Tarkovsky, we will watch Pixar's absolute gem WALL·E (2008) An excellent science-fiction story with a powerful environmental message, told in incredible enthralling animation. It's certainly from an era where Pixar could do no wrong and this is arguably them at their finest. We'll also be checking out a new sci-fi show, a modern one (2015) from AMC called Humans, about "synths", realistic humanoid robots being sold like generic appliances. A good companion for our Pluto Mondays I'd say. Going to suggest  Dark City - 1998 Cast:  Roger Ebert loved the hell out of the movie so much he did the commentary for the home release quote:Dark City by Alex Proyas is a great visionary achievement, a film so original and exciting, it stirred my imagination like Metropolis and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Tomorrow, we will check out a Tarkovsky film, starting with Manifisto's suggestion, Stalker (1979) A surreal philosophical film from the Soviet Era, it follows the story of two people who are following a guide (Stalker) through the wasteland called The Zone, to find something left behind by alien visitors, which is said to grant any wish for those who come across it.  Our preshow this time is an Outer Limits episode called "Demon with a Glass Hand", it starts one hour before the film. Tomorrow, it's a film suggested by BFM, it's 12 Monkeys (1995)!  An unusual time travel tale by Terry Gilliam. See Bruce Willis actually acting, as his character goes back to the past to figure how to save humanity from an epidemic that wipes out nearly everyone. Also, we will be featuring another Stark Trek: TNG episode, this time, it's The Measure of a Man. Tonight, Robot Carnival (1987) An anthology of nine animated shorts from nine different directors and teams from Japan, whose only common theme is "robots". Each of them with a distinctive animation style and story, ranging from comedy and drama. This is one of Leraika's recommendations for our current Sci-Fi theme and should be a good time. And speaking of "robots", we'll have the second episode of that series about sentient androids and their impact on society, the BBC+AMC production, Humans. And because 12 Monkeys we watched last time led to discussion of its main influence, we'll also be watching the French short film La Jetée from 1962! It's gonna be a packed night and you won't want to miss it. On Wednesday, it's Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972) A film suggested by both Sloth and Mani, this one, much like Stalker, which we've watched recently, is more of a philosophical tale. This time, it's about the crew stuck in a space station on another solar system, observing the water world of Solaris. And they may be in the process of being contacted by alien beings whose mind(s) they do not understand or can even begin to grasp as a concept. We'll also see the return of The Outer Limits, an episode titled "The Zanti Misfits" requested by Evil Gibson. This one has some seriously cheesy alien effects even for this show which was already infamous for it, but it's also an haunting allegory for how cruel the human race can be sometimes. Tonight, it's Dark City (1998, Director's Cut) A film suggested by Evil Gibson, this one's as surreal and trippy as they can go. It's described as unsettling at times, confusing at others, but it's meant to be a visual ride throughout the whole experience like few other films in the genre. I like this choice quote from a review: Paste Magazine posted:Classic movie fans who love 1920s German expressionism and 1940s American noir cinema were immediately smitten with Proyas’ seamless merging of the two styles. Yet Dark City wasn’t just a crafty homage to such films; it was also an exceptional realization of a terrific screenplay that delivered genuine genre mystery and thrills, and packed quite a punch with its shocking third act twist. This was a unique vision that took established cinematic art styles and managed to create its own universe with its own specific lore, all the while tastefully referencing the old styles from which it lovingly borrowed. Dark City was absolutely astonishing. You can see so many ideas and effects that were months later reused in the Matrix. And I'm certainly glad we watched the Director's Cut instead of the original theater version with that forced on introduction voice-over spoiling the whole premise. Tonight, we are watching THE CLASSIC. It's Blade Runner (1982)! A beautiful film, just one of the best looking ever made, and with the perfect futuristic film-noir vibe. Oh yeah, we ended up with so many films left to watch for February's month that we are extending Sci-Fi Month to cover March, too. So, tonight, it's Moon (2009)  A suggestion from BFM, this is a rather unique film. A low stakes sci-fi tale of a lonely man stuck on the Moon, and the impact of such a profound isolation in one's mind. Amazing acting from the one actor on screen, plus an impressive execution to its crazy twists and evocative existential dread, it's a really good one. Come watch it with us if you've never seen it before. Moon was amazing, don't let the critics tell you otherwise. Tonight, it's Redline (2009) A gorgeous animated film about an all important galaxy-wide racing event. It took 7 years to produce its more than 100000 hand drawn pictures, and it shows! Amazing soundtrack and memorable characters, too. Additionally, we are also having another animated sci-fi feature, the anthology Neo Tokyo (1987) with three short films by different directors. Mixing high-end animation and a ton of artistic expression, this one's gonna be great. If nothing else, you can see the early work that led to the making of Akira shortly after, but I promise you there's a whole lot more here. Up next, it's Ex Machina (2014) Described as mix of Frankenstein and 2001 Space Odyssey, it's a thought provoking tale with a small, tight cast of characters. Concise but also unpredictable, creepy and perfectly prescient of our current era. Fittingly, we are also slotting in another episode of the rather good series Humans to go along with the main feature, and that should be our whole prescription of synth/android-based sci-fi for the rest of the month. We couldn't do two months of sci-fi movies and not feature at least one of the Alien(s) films at some point, so here we go! This Wednesday, Alien (1979, theatrical version)  One of the genre's truly greats that time hasn't spoiled, Alien remains original, terrifying, and superbly atmospheric even to this day. Stunning direction, incredible music, and just the right amount of horror, suspense and sci-fi elements. Here, I'll even promise to hold your hand when you get scared, so don't miss out!  Also, a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode before the film, it's Conspiracy, one of the best horror-themed ones in the series. Tonight, it's Arrival (2016) An intimate study of reality and human condition with a lesser focus on big sci-fi theatrics. Complemented by a haunting score, griping realism, and excellent cinematography. A jolly good time, for sure! Additionally, another episode of the BBC+AMC Humans series before the film. The small group of self-aware synths keep trying to stay out of public eyes, but a three letter government agency gives them chase no matter the cost. Do note that daylight savings changed the hours on the US a few days ago, but I'm in Europe and it hasn't happened here (yet), and I scheduled this one for the usual hour and the "usual hour" may now be different for you. For the next one, I'll try to realign with what most people watching are expecting, so bear with me for today. Tonight, one of our final films, it's Starman (1984) This was one was suggested by Stoner Sloth, and it's a story about an alien who comes to Earth after being "invited" by Voyager II. Directed by John Carpenter, it's actually a sci-fi love story, sweet, very 80's aesthetic and, more importantly, featuring amazing acting by Jeff Bridges, who just nails an alien character trying to live out as a human with all sort of perfect out-worldly mannerisms and tics.  Also featuring a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, The Defector, a pretty neat episode and the introduction of the Romulans in this universe. Do note we are still adjusting times due to daylight savings in NA, which haven't applied yet to the parts of Europe that also do that bullshit, so it's a bit out of sync in comparison to the usual. We'll be aligning things better for our NA friends this Saturday. It's a rather good adaptation of the original novel and if you were mildly curious about it, this is your chance to come watch it with friends. Or you could rewatch it to prepare for part 2? Tonight, the final film of our sci-fi exploration, it's Edge of Tomorrow (2014) A frantic mix of Groundhog Day and Independence Day that pulls both thrill and humor well. It's a good one and you won't want to miss it!  Also, the conclusion to the Star Trek: The Next Generation arc The Best of Both Worlds. This episode was the first in the fourth season and took a whole year to come out, leaving the audience hanging after the cliffhanger ending of season 3, so expectations were super high. And the landing? Very well achieved, too. It's a classic for a reason. That was a pretty cool drat film. I don't think most would call it a "classic" but it's the finest example of a sci-fi block buster done very well. Tonight's the final episode of Urasawa's Pluto at the usual time, and also the last I'll be streaming for a while as I'm taking an extended break. If anyone wants to take over movie nite "duty", feel free to say so.
