Ah yes, Stampy. Truly a noble beast. Both serene and powerful, Stampy is able to carry massive amounts of goods directly, and even multiple people, but is completely unsuited to pulling a cart. Possibly Stampy could plow a field, but not without specifically designed tackle. Might not be the greatest of ideas even if that gear were to be made, which you could easily afford.

Horsewoman posted:

The "problems" with Stampy are that you aren't sure how old she(he?) is and the beast has no obvious sex, so if you were ever able to get another you may not be able to breed more. You flat out can't know a lot of things, based on your skill in handling horses. Too many things simply do not apply: for example Stamp's teeth fall out when they get worn and new ones are always ready to replace them. You can't gauge the age as easily. Stamp sometimes sings or hoots or makes odd calls, which... sometimes birds make calls like that, and don't have blatantly different sexes, though some look the same or different if they're male or female. Honestly, you wouldn't know how or be extremely inclined to check. Stampy is not particularly birdlike, other than sometimes making a kind of tweet instead of trumpeting.

But more importantly Stamp's huge and has a strong tendency to rear up and move around on two legs when annoyed or concerned, and because of this requires expensive and specialized harnesses and actual skill in handling animals. That, and you're starting to suspect that maybe Stampy wouldn't do incredibly well in very cold environments. Or just extreme environments in general, outside certain kinds.

The possibly-serious problem is that Stampy prefers leaves and branches, not grass. Grass would be rare enough in very arid places, but you doubt there will be many shrubs on the desert road from Zbub to Frigg. The warm and wet climate in the Spice Islands went pretty well, judging by the condition of her skin, but this isn't the skin of some armored lizard creature, either. You bought 'em in Xoma, which is not particularly warm or wet, and Stampy also seemed to be in very good condition there. Warmer than home, for certain. You might need to get some kind of blankets or something when you get back.

Stampy seems to be in overall good shape, clear eyed and healthy, with no problems at all.

How about the horses? You look them over. Fine. They didn't get eaten by horrifying parasites or anything, and didn't develop any illnesses. Felix & Mary did an excellent job making sure they stayed healthy, and they don't seem to be much worse for wear.

You instruct your vassals to be sure the animals have enough fodder to make the transit out of Zbub, whichever direction you end up going. Stampy needing woolens when you get home is not a concern yet and can be dealt with when it has to be.

--

Lemon's... well it's a good tradeoff. She needs to chill out and it's not going to kill you to hang out on deck doing basically nothing for some of the time. You're both able to hold up your sides of the bargain.

The hide? It's a fine pelt, and exotic. It'd be extremely nice to keep, but you've already got an exotic expensive beast. It makes a certain amount of sense to give it to Mary and have her come up with heroic tale of how she killed the thing, and get the reputation that may come in handy in Zbub. It is a guild city after all.

As for the plans? There's some sense in keeping quiet about it, but this is a need to know situation. With Siemowit already having a possibly big head start, you're going to want them acting quickly to help track him down. A short and quiet meeting in your cabin gets them up to speed. They can be trusted to keep it quiet.

It has developed an unpleasant black-iridescent patination, but it isn't damaged in the slightest, and doesn't appear to be cursed or anything alarming. Yeesh, you really hilted this thing, the whole blade's like that, and most of the guard. Why the sword has this but none of the armor does is an oddity you may be able to look into at some point or other, if you can ever find more information about what happened to the matron in the first place.

It shrugs and shakes its head: like what'd you expect me to do? idfk.
Not deciding to be talkative, but better than down in the pit.

There are very few shiprats on this particular boat, but you're able to figure something out.
It expires normally. Lemon eats it.

The difference between life and death is sometimes preparedness and just raw durability instead of luck. Not wanting to risk staying alive on chance, you decide to personally inspect the sets of armor you've got. Obviously Sevan can handle her own, but it isn't going to hurt to be completely aware of your, your retinue's, & the horses' situation.

Ideally this would be a smooth, easy job. Find & deal with a mage. But this Siemowit is not even remotely some novice.

Felix posted:

"Geomancer?" There's a few ways this could play out. One more common use of the term means someone who can manipulate earthforms -- from what Esmail's told you that's not the whole story. If he can use dust and soil to do divinations that means he could divine us, so I'd say we're going to want to stack the deck as much as possible. So even if he knows ahead of time there's just not much he can do.

Lemon posted:

This isn't to discount any spells to make sandstorms or move stone. Divination is rarely, or at best ironically correct. When it is. Everyone's still making their own choices, Zlata.

Mary posted:

It might or might not be a good idea to try and catch him out in the wild. I can't see it going well if he causes an earthquake or something and destroys a town. Can he do that?

Felix posted:

Figuring it out seems like something we should try to do. If he's been spending time in Zbub he probably wouldn't have been hanging out with anyone from a guild, though. They wouldn't want an ~inquisitor~ farting up the place with royal ideas of nobility, I wouldn't think. If he's been inquiring about anything he's likely to be going after criminals.

Seems sensible. Looking at the armor, you aren't so sure things would go well with the horses.

Horsewoman posted:

Stampy, yes. A mighty beast who is going to be ok if there are minor injuries. If the ground shifts enough to break a leg Stampy is chonky enough to recover, eventually. Hopefully. A horse? No. As far as you can be sure only the most skilled healers can fix a horse with its leg broken in the wrong spot -- there's just very little meat on some of those leg bones, and even in this advanced age splinting it isn't going to do much more than extend the inevitable. Even if you had the heaviest imaginable armor it wouldn't be greatly helpful.

As you know, there's five extremely general "styles" of armor, although there's a lot of overlap. You've got your more lightly armored, militias, scouts, & simple soldiers; your more medium styles, like many professionals; your heavily armored cavalry & noblemen who can afford such incredibly expensive gear. There's also "unarmored" "styles" of rudimentary fighting, or the cultivated techniques of the sage. For a very, very few who might ever end up with some, the techniques needed to maintain and use ancient armors are so radically different from normal gear that very little usual knowledge practically applies to them.

Light & Medium Armors posted:

There are situations where less is more. Easier and cheaper to obtain and maintain is a real concern. There's also the fact that huge armors make archery and maneuvering more difficult. Your stuff is good. The northern armors barely need oiled or anything, and the Spice Island parts are pretty impervious to harsh conditions of rain or salt -- exposure to dryness is what might eventually cause problems. All this is going to be combat ready before you disembark. Really the only thing you can think of would be to armor up Stampy better, which would cost time and not a small amount of money, as well as reducing the sheer amount he can carry.

Finally, you reach Zbub

er finally you reach Zbub

Sevan wants to take Toby out into the city, and Mary is going to hit the Hunters' and spin this pelt into whatever amount of rank she can get. You pay off the shipmaster. You've got Lemon & Felix, as well as your loot and cash.

Wanna send out your people to try and investigate for you? y/n. This'd just be Lemon & Felix right now, you could always send them all out later.

What track do you want to take first?
A:
No idea how long it's going to take to find any trace of this guy. Find somewhere safe to park -- get some rooms & stable the animals.
B: Send a letter to Ell, let her know you're on the trail.
C: Check out what armor might be available for Stampy, what the cost could be.
D: Leave your junk by the docks, either Lemon & Felix will watch it, or it'll be fine. Investigate this mage yourself. Sooner started sooner done.
