Despite this being a nominally shonen series (the manga adapations ran in shonen series) the characters obviously seem to appeal to a fujoshi type of crowd. One weird thing is that it's basically a system set up by women (or at least a group thereof) to pit men against each other to reduce conflict or some such and are thus the antagonists. Like it's obviously an excuse to have a bunch of guys do rap battles against each other but it's still sorta weird, but I guess still in bounds of "acceptable" gender stuff in Japan for the genre.

I really don't think anyone considers this a shounen thing. It originated under Idea Factory's otome game label and the manga series all came more than a year later, with one running in a josei magazine.

Three of the four manga are in shonen magazines and the fourth is in a josei one so I merely assumed, but that probably speaks more to how broadly some shonen magazines tend to target rather than the contents itself.

Have you seen the guys? This is not even slightly directed towards heterosexual men.

Hypmic has always been laser-focused on the fujo crowd. I think at some point it was grouped with male idol franchises as well.

This happens often when an all or mostly all women circle does something under shonen/seinen. I gotta give Rimuko Takeshi credit for how Inuyasha and even Ranma looks. "Sorta wholesome and fun adventures/fighting but in a Yaoi style" has been going on since "free." Pollyanna posted:Have you seen the guys? This is not even slightly directed towards heterosexual men. This style has also been used for romance manga about really pretty girls and really pretty guys and the horribly abusive relationships they go thru often. Typically the friendships are stable and normal but the love life involved a lot of drawings of a girl getting choked and wide eyed and then stuttering an "i love you kazaki-kun!" and it calms the tragic and angry but hot guy down. I apparently only did half my homework on this long ago when I wrote that I liked Torhu Honda from fruits basket and Endorph summarized that she is a cliche from this sort of genre, so I flipped thru a few with a similair art style on the cover and apparently Yaoi hands are drawn large for slapping the poo poo out of anime girlfriends. Also there was a webcomic online of the genre and it was about a girl who wants to be a rockstar and starts dating someone from a band and its really happy and romantic but also another bandmate is the "tragically angry but hot" one and theres all these drawings of him being menacing but it had a commnent section and every single reader was going on about how girl-chan is happy with A-san and should be with B-san while I was wondering why is A-san even hanging out with B-san when he's a fuckin rear end in a top hat.
