i was watching a history of bsd lecture and kirk mckusick said one of the guys working on networking modeled it on the current of water flowing through a pipe. he also said when they guy wrote on a blackboard the equations for it everyone was confused.

to remind people "byte" is an intentional misspelling of "bite", to differentiate it from "bit" (which is just BInary digiT). the bite being the amount of bits an instruction on the ibm stretch ate. and then a nibble is indeed a small bite.
