I’m a dealer in western OR and we have it :rolldice: Our limits went to up $10 for the first year we were open post quarantine since we capped play at 3 players per side, but now we’re back to capacity (I guess the pandemic is over now? :eng99:) and back down to $5 (with 5x max odds).

I was at the Odawa casino in Petoskey, Michigan. Something I've never seen before: no charge for a Buy bet on the 4/10. No dollar up-front, no dollar on the win. Just becomes a Buy at $20.

I've never heard of this but I'm curious if there's something you're missing because I can't imagine a casino offering a bet with no house edge (pays 2:1 with 3 ways to win and 6 ways to lose).

gently caress yeah though, I'd play it if I ever saw it.

I love that casino for its low table limits. Can stay all day without losing your shirt at $5 craps.

If you get comps there, this would be a loophole to get "free" comps.

there were stories about some casinos offering triple-triple field bets which i believe are zero edge at that point, though mostly as temporary promotions, but i'm not sure if that's just fake gambling lore

I doubt that. I talked with a box person about it and they track betting patterns. They give more points to people who bet high house edge bets (place 5 and 9 are like the sweet spot).

Getting over on players who can't figure out the odds is their business. They don't suddenly stop analyzing that when it comes to the comps.

yeah i remember reading (and this could be bullshit) that odds bets aren't added to the "total" bets you've placed in the casino for comp tracking, because that segment of the bet is zero edge

Definitely true. Assume that comps accumulate based on how big your bets are and how bad the house edge is for you and how much time you let the casino try to win it from you. It's not an exact science because you're not being continuously rated. The box person (or the pit person, in casinos where they've eliminated the box) looks at each players bets every so often and puts in an estimate that generates points. Or, that's how it was working before the pandemic when I was playing a lot.

It's a lot easier in Blackjack. All the players have the same house edge. Points accumulate (very slowly) based on the size of the bets.

You should ignore comps. You could just buy the buffet or the room up front and save yourself a lot of money and time. If the box sees you throwing down $5 yo bets every roll, they're going to give you a lot of points. You're going to lose a small fortune, but you'll have that Diamond card, or whatever. They comp you a little of what you've lost. So you come back.

One time, I noticed that I seemed to get more points when I was tipping a lot, too, but yeah, that pretty much lines up with "the more money you're giving away, the more points/status/whatever you get".

I would like to know if the pit boss still has some discretion or if it's all just cameras and auto-rating now.

Definitely felt like in the past the return on some judicious large tipping would get you some great comps. And the opposite as well. I hate tipping when I'm losing, had a terrible streak at red rocks blackjack one time and even though I played a good long time, they had me rated at almost nothing.

I went to a poker tournament last week and lmao this first timer kid just could not lose and somehow fluked his way to the final table. Never knew whether he'd won a hand till people told him, constantly asked what the blinds were despite them being up on the screen, was always loudly talking about his cards after folding despite others still being in the hand, folded aces pre flop and showed (???) vs a shove. Ended up cashing in like 5th place. I've never seen exasperation like it in all the old timers. This loving game.

A drunk person stumbling into the craps table and not understanding what's going on is actually insanely accurate to the craps experience (as a dealer at least), you're all good! I legit lol'ed at this for what it's worth.

I can't speak for other dealers but I'm personally into it - my whole career strategy is "Don't Burn Out", and I wouldn't have gotten into this if I didn't enjoy gambling on some level, and having action in play (ie I can win money, but don't lose any if I don't win my bet) makes the night fun. I count any tip (including bets that I don't win) a good tip.

If I were to name one pet peeve, it's when players tip other players instead of the dealers, especially on a hot roll (where the shooter is already up hundreds or thousands of dollars) - that sometimes feels like an unintentional slap in the face to the people actually doing work. Note: if the dealers are getting the love too this doesn't bother me at all, it only bothers me when it's a snub.

But I don't let that stuff bother me once I hit my break because Don't Burn Out - at the end of the day I basically play games for a living and it's a pretty nice life.

:haw:
"Oh MAN! This games AWESOME. It was in that MOVIE!!! Luke, LUKE! We have to play CRAPS!"

Then they drop either too much or too little cash on the table, while the shooter has the dice, and bet a nickle on the Field. "$10 table, sir"

A player who is regularly betting the horn has some wild theories about patterns and luck. You don't want to ask them to explain themselves.

Interesting, I never heard of people tipping hot rollers but I guess that makes sense. I always tip the dealers when I win.

I'm in Reno and at Circus Circus for a family thing and wanted to kill an hour before going to bed last night. Pulled $200 from the ATM expecting to lose it all as minimums were $25, but I ended up winning $165 (-$5 for the dealers) after an hour of play which is huge.

I got as low as $50 on my bank roll but had a pretty hot streak at the end where I rolled 7 on the come out 5 times and hit the point with an odds bet 3ish times. Made a bunch of money for the table which felt good.

Once I got up enough I decided to take my winnings which covered my room for the night.

I felt bad for one of the guys at the table though because he was never placing odds bets and when betting hard ways always bet a single $25 chip on a hard 6 or 8, not knowing he could split it up into $5 bets. Dealers were definitely trying to give him help but he didn't really get what they were trying to tell him. He started doing odds bets once he saw I was making more money off it.

I rarely go to the casino but when I do it’s for craps, and craps only. So it’s especially frustrating when I make the effort to go to the (midsize midwestern city) casino and they only have one table open and it is completely full with a group of dudes like myself hanging around for an opening and they don’t open a drat second table. Take my money damnit.

I was recently at a hybrid craps table that was partially digital - there were no chips, you just used a touchscreen to place your bets. While it was cool, the biggest problem was there was a 15-second timer to place bets. I need more time to think!
