My only issue with Nightfly is it really lacks that Walter Becker dark sarcasm. I'll be listening to a song and it's about 50s nostalgia or some woman or whatever and I keep waiting for someone to get murdered or a sentient robot having an existential crisis or whatever but it never comes.

What Fagen and Becker did to Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq wrt the Black Cow sample was some down low and gross industry perv poo poo, for two guys who staked a lot of their names on being Artist's Artists and industry outsiders

my problem with royal scam is that its like half really good and half utterly skippable. countdown on the whole is too long and noodly, they hadnt earned that kind of song length yet. which is why its good they went back to basics with pretzel logic and built up from there

Yeah man.

Steely Dan is known for three things.
1) Their dark sarcastic lyrics.
2) Their studio perfectionism.
3) Their bitter feud with the Eagles.

I mean I'll take any track from Master of the Game over any SD track any day. You'd think if they had their way, they'd have put a hard filter for everything under 100hz and another one for anything over 3000hz and said "we want an album that is nothing. but. trebble."

Gaucho being the exception on that front, but Aja is particularly bad. The Expanding Man sounds like it's recorded on an iPhone.

I just found this thread because of what I correctly assumed was a Steel Dan nod in the Lepers Colony.

Has anyone talked about some of the great Christopher Cross songs that exist yet:

I’ve been on a mock recently.

Also John Mayer tried to do a pastiche album recently in a Soft Rock style that has some of the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard.

I made a yacht rock thread a few years back and Ride Like Tbe Wind loving shreds rear end. Christopher Cross is also an oddly endearing follow on IG? He’s just havin a good time.

That whole record is good front to back; I do skip track 1 sometimes because track 2 rules.

As for Steely Dan the interlocking piano/guitar groove on The Fez is one of my favorite musical moments ever:

Which part - his insanely old New York pronunciation of "QUART-ah" , or the mustard he puts on the delivery of "Mr. Chauuuuss"? Cause the rest just sounds like old Donny.

I love those kind of weird single-word deliveries, Tom Waits does it all the time and it rules (check out Burma Shave's " so drill me a hole... with a barber pole").

Also yeah, The Fez is extremely hard

Then I read an interview with Fagen where he said he hates the cover because it’s so ugly.

For twelve years, you have been asking: Who is John Galt? This is John Galt speaking. I am the man who loves his life. I am the man who does not sacrifice his love or his values. I am the man who has deprived you of victims and thus has destroyed your world, and if you wish to know why you are peris

Diddy actually did sample a Christopher Cross song.
