Crankit posted:Here's my dumb question, how do I learn to play poker? I'm in the UK so is any particular kind of poker more popular here? I think there are a lot of ways, you could sit down at a table with a friend or three, a deck of cards, and something to use as chips and learn with a printout of the game rules. Or you could download any of the many, many poker games for your phone or computer, which will mostly enforce normal rules as you play. Or you could pick up a book, there's a lot of options there too. I learned to play through a combination of reading rules and playing online, using pokerstars' free (fake money, not real money) site, but that was a long time ago. If you want to learn to play poker for money... well, don't, but if you really insist, definitely play actual humans for not real money for a bit to learn just the mechanics of the game, but then play for real money (microstakes) so you don't start to make bad habits that can form from playing for fake money. That might sound wired but basically poker is a game of bluffing and calculated risks, and when there are zero stakes, people bluff way more and take bigger risks and that will skew your gut feeling of what is a reasonable play. You can also watch a bunch of youtubes, but I think most of the ones I see are either more advanced, or are just streams of people playing in casinos or online which will again probably not be reflective of reality or good play.

This is a very good beginners course that will take you from learning the rules to having a good basic strategy to beat microstakes games

I'm very close to Michigan, but do not live in Michigan. If I want to play an online series like the Pokerstars US Championships that allows Michigan players, how would I go about this if I am willing to physically play from Michigan? Any idea if their pool is just Michigan players, or is it all US players?

But in general, playing on Pokerstars just means going to the state in question. I live in Virginia but I have an account on Pokerstars PA because I have family there and play when I go to visit. You can likely download the software and create an account from anywhere, and can just only sit at real money games from within that state. (You might have issues with the geolocation software. For example, Fanduel's geolocation does not work on my laptop, no matter what I do, at least in Virginia. I can play their casino games in Pennsylvania, but their sportsbook just will not recognize that I'm in Virginia.)

Is there a good way to find "home" online games rather than running to ACR or Ignition of NLH? Would enjoy playing with a constant group of people on a regular schedule. I keep seeing sites online for people to host their own games but have nobody to play with. Do you know of any places where I can find games looking for people?

I wouldn't trust an online "home" game with real money with people I didn't know IRL, and I don't think you should either. It's absurdly easy to cheat via collaboration and there's basically no way to tell if your opponents are doing that. At a big online site you're still vulnerable to that but at least you have the large user base randomized to who you're playing with so you might mostly be playing non-cheaters, but with a home game you are playing just a handful of people and whoever cheats is gonna clean you out.
