taking advantage of a weekend off to catch up on a few notes from the start of 2022. from here it seems like the war in Ukraine will end up being the biggest driver of economic collapse and radical nationalism, but it's still early days. can't wait to check back in the midterms to see how the reactionaries end up doing. in the meantime:

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/voting-rights-brawl-takes-center-stage-us-senate-2022-01-19/

quote:

WASHINGTON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats suffered twin legislative defeats late on Wednesday in their push to toughen voting rights protections in the run-up to this November's mid-term elections that will determine control of Congress in 2023.

Militia-aligned group will control a Northern California county if recall vote totals hold

quote:

After two years of threats and conspiracy theories, the militia-backed movement seeking to seize control of one of California’s most conservative counties, so far, appears to have prevailed — a major victory for far-right factions vying to replace more moderate Republican elected leaders across the state.
...
Moty’s replacement will be either Dale Ball, a local construction superintendent, or Tim Garman, president of a local school board. Ball had a lead of just 33 votes over Garman.

Both candidates were at the “victory” party Tuesday night with members of the local militia.

If it proves successful, the recall represents a major political victory for far-right factions in California as they seek to take power on local elected boards across the state.

Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks at white nationalist event

quote:

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Saturday addressed the America First Political Action Committee's conference, an event organized by Nick Fuentes, who has been labeled a "white supremacist" by the Justice Department.

Why it matters: Greene is the second Republican representative — along with Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar — to associate herself with the racist fringe group.

What they're saying: Greene said attendees at the conference represented "cancelled Americans," according to HuffPost.

nothing particularly insightful for this update. the theocratic characteristics of the coming american reich are in full relief in the first half of this year. a leaked SCOTUS decision strongly suggests that an overturn of Roe v. Wade is coming. rightwing reactionaries are increasingly zeroing in on sexual minorities as a priority for oppression. a recent mass shooting in this period featured a near-immediate propaganda campaign to falsely identify the shooter as a trans woman.

the war in ukraine is in fact destabilizing the global economy, but the biggest driver of economic catastrophe in america turns out to be the federal reserve. jerome has embarked on a campaign of raising interest rates and shrinking the balance sheet at a historic rate. this is ostensibly to fight inflation but the impact on markets by the midterms seems likely to be apocalyptic from where we sit today. it will be interesting to see how events have played out when we check in after august.

Anger as Texas attorney general declares Pride Week ‘illegal’

quote:

As Pride Week gets underway in one Texas school district, the state’s attorney general has declared the whole event illegal.

In a stern letter to the Austin Independent School District – which he also posted on Twitter – Attorney General Ken Paxton said the week-long celebration of LGBTQ students violates state laws against teaching “human sexuality” without parents’ permission.

Living With The Far-Right Insurgency In Idaho

quote:

I asked him whether reporters like me were part of the problem, parachuting into town from the East Coast to go on extremism safaris, essentially advertising the place as a fascist fantasyland. No, no, he said. Five years ago, he explained, he would’ve downplayed the extremism in the area to me and worked to repair the town’s image.

“But we’re losing here,” he said. “We’re losing our state. We’re losing our town. ... It’s just becoming overwhelming, and so now I’m — this is a cry for help.”

It’s also a warning, he said.

“If these groups can get a win, if they can put a stake in the ground and say, ‘We own north Idaho,’ or ‘We own Idaho, we have our own state,’ then in my view, the potential there is that the floodwaters are about to break.”

“Once you knock over that first domino, then it’s not just going to happen in Idaho; it’s going to happen in Texas or Arizona, or Nevada or Wyoming or Montana.”

After all what could go wrong with funding the police? Twitter Thread by Brynn Tannehill

quote:

I have a friend, whose husband is a retired Marine special forces guy. He spent better part of a year at the siege of Khe Sanh. After he retired, he was a police officer (SWAT) and medical first responder. He's vaguely conservative on some things, but not nuts.

In his retirement, he still teaches police, SWAT teams, and first responders about dealing with ugly mass casualty events, including Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and High Yield Explosives. He's still part of the state volunteer emergency services. This past week, he got asked to do a day of training for emergency medical services providers in a different county. Think even redder and more Trumpy than his already fairly conservative home town in a red state. Part of his training (the briefing with PowerPoint) was discussing where mass casualty attacks come from, who does them, their tactics technics and procedures, and what sorts of injuries their mass casualty events produce. Basically, here's what to expect. For anyone who's military, this should sound pretty boring and normal: it's the intel briefing that everyone gets when discussing CONOPS.

Except, this crowd of "students" was having none of it.

Why? Because this decorated combat vet who's pro-police in in most cases had the temerity to show them the FBI statistics on the sources of domestic terrorism and mass casualty events: which is roughly 75% right wing, 18% religious, 4% left wing, and the rest other or N/A. Under right wing he included things like neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the like.

The audience refused to believe.

"No! It's Antifa!"

He pulled up the spreadsheets and stats on the FBI website.

They still wouldn't believe him, even with FBI data collected under Trump. The audience seemed disinclined to believe anything he told them after that, despite being by far the most experienced person they're ever going to meet.

He's vowed to never go back: they're unteachable.

But it says something about the future of law enforcement. When future administrations and Fox News decide to blame someone for anything, law enforcement is going to be even worse than they are now. Remember the special treatment RIttenhouse got? I'm even more firm in my assessment that these militias are the next Sturmabteilung.

Trans people are responsible for mass killings? Sure! They'll all believe it. All the problems we see with police today are only going to get worse as the few remaining (remotely) sane officers retire or are forced out because they refuse to believe things that are patently false.

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, ending 50 years of federal abortion rights

quote:

Almost half the states are expected to outlaw or severely restrict abortion as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, which is related to a highly restrictive new Mississippi abortion law. The laws will affect tens of millions of people around the country, who may have to cross state lines to seek reproductive health care.

Treasury Secretary Yellen expects inflation to ‘remain high’

quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen acknowledged Tuesday that she and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell “could have used a better word” than “transitory” when describing the expected run of inflation in the U.S. economy. She added that she was hopeful it would soon be on the decline.

“I do expect inflation to remain high although I very much hope that it will be coming down now,” Yellen told the Senate Finance Committee during a hearing on the agency’s latest budget request.

Right-Wing Judges Say It’s “Harmless” to Label Climate Activist a Terrorist

quote:

A PANEL OF three Trump-appointed judges this week upheld an excessive eight-year prison sentence handed down to climate activist Jessica Reznicek, ruling that a terrorism enhancement attached to her sentence was “harmless.”

The terror enhancement, which dramatically increased Reznicek’s sentence from its original recommended range, set a troubling precedent. Decided by a lower court in 2021, it contends that Reznicek’s acts against private property were “calculated to influence or affect the conduct of government.” The appellate justices’ decision to uphold her sentence, callously dismissing the challenge to her terrorism enhancement, doubles down on a chilling message: Those who take direct action against rapacious energy corporations can be treated as enemies of the state.

biden is obviously a terrible leader but i don't want to give the impression this thread is about him specifically. he's beholden to the historical and material forces that would end the american republic no matter who is nominally at the helm. similar to von papen, who was also the product of a political tradition completely inappropriate for the material conditions of his time.

one thing that stands out in the wave of social media fury this weekend is that americans broadly can't seem to come to grips with the structural failures of the american empire. neoliberal indoctrination is so thorough that conceiving of forces beyond individual politicians and parties is impossible. i'd be curious to know if this was true for the weimar republic as well.

end of 2022 update: SCOTUS yanking back abortion rights and Biden playing out his whole hand have given us two more years to contemplate what all 3 arms of the federal government will look like under reactionary control in 2024. in the meantime state governments and local extremists progress the early fourth reich project of cracking down on people daring to live while being LGBT

Florida to ban transgender health care treatments for minors

quote:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Transgender children in Florida will be barred from receiving hormones or undergoing surgeries to treat gender dysphoria under a rule approved Friday by state medical officials at the urging of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
...
DeSantis has made criticizing such treatments for minors a routine part of his reelection campaign, often referring to the procedures in graphic terms during rallies and speeches. The new policy, finalized days before the election, marks another example of DeSantis' ability to leverage the power of government to accomplish controversial political goals, bolstering his national reputation as a combative GOP culture warrior.

Right-wing influencers and media double down on anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in the wake of the Colorado shooting

School lunch is too costly for a growing number of families. Will a White House pledge help?

quote:

A flood of families have applied for a price break now that school meals cost money for the first time since the early days of the pandemic, and sky-high prices of other essentials constrict parents’ budgets. Many families are within $100 of the modest limit for qualifying for free or reduced-price meals, according to school nutrition directors.

“I’ve cried with a lot of families,” said Angie Richey, nutrition services supervisor of Roseville Area Schools in Minnesota. “I had to tell one family of six that they were $33 over.”
...
In Clarion, Pennsylvania, high school senior Marshall Troese has a hard time justifying the $2.55 price of a school lunch because he knows his family’s budget is tight. Their car broke down before they found out school would be charging for meals again, and Marshall, 17, said he sometimes skips lunch so he isn’t adding to the burden.

“There’s a point where you get used to being hungry,” he said. On days that he doesn’t eat lunch, he uses change he finds around his house and purchases a small bag of chips from a nearby gas station convenience store after school instead.

Neo-Nazi leader and Maryland woman allegedly plotted to ‘completely destroy’ Baltimore, Justice Department says

quote:

Two people charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities – a neo-Nazi leader and a woman with whom he had a personal relationship – allegedly planned to attack electrical substations encircling Baltimore and “completely destroy” the entire city, according to federal court documents.

The Justice Department has charged Brandon Clint Russell and Sarah Beth Clendaniel with conspiracy to damage energy facilities, alleging that the Maryland-focused plot was driven by ethnically or racially motivated extremist beliefs.

They “conspired to inflict maximum harm on the power grid,” Tom Sobocinski, who heads the FBI’s field office in Baltimore, said during a news conference Monday. “The accused were not just talking, but taking steps to fulfill their threats and further their extremist goals.”

DeSantis Wants to Defund Florida Colleges That Have Programs on Diversity

quote:

DeSantis, who is viewed as a viable Republican candidate heading into the 2024 presidential election season, has staked his political future on attacking policies meant to benefit communities of color and LGBTQ people, most notably through attacks in the sphere of public education. Last March, DeSantis signed HB 7, a law commonly referred to as the “Stop WOKE Act,” which forbids educators from providing lessons on racism or LGBTQ issues if it offends parents in those districts.

The law has had chilling effects, forcing teachers and school librarians to ban books, and prompting many districts to reevaluate lessons that they believe could run afoul of its provisions.

Tennessee law already says that religious leaders do not have to officiate weddings they object to. Arkansas leads charge to weaken child labor protections

quote:

Passage of the Youth Hiring Act of 2023 represents the latest attempt in mostly Republican-led states to loosen child labor laws, despite federal officials seeking to crack down on offenses.

In Ohio, lawmakers are considering a bill that would let 14- and 15-year-old children work year-round until 9pm each day. The bill has bipartisan support and includes a resolution that would ask the federal government to change its child labor laws.

In Iowa, legislative proposals would allow children at least 15 years old to sell alcohol and children at least 14 years old to work specific jobs in meatpacking plants. The Iowa bill would also protect companies from liability if a child got sick or injured or died while at work.

Lawmakers in Minnesota, which is led by a Democratic governor, Tim Walz, have filed a bill that would permit children aged 16 and 17 to work construction jobs.

Takeaways from America’s second-largest bank failure

quote:

US customers held at least $151.5 billion in uninsured deposits by the end of 2022, SVB’s latest annual report said. Foreign deposits reached at least $13.9 billion and are also uninsured. Companies may have gotten a decent amount out during the bank run, but there is still a lot of money at stake if a buyer or bailout isn’t reached. Roku held approximately $487 million of its $1.9 billion in cash at Silicon Valley Bank, 26% of the company’s total. The streaming company added most of the deposits were uninsured. Video game site Roblox and bankrupt cryptocurrency lender BlockFi are also facing the fallout.

Long lines at food banks after pandemic SNAP benefits end

quote:

Food banks across the U.S. are feeling pressure to provide following the end of extra pandemic-era SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called the Food Stamp Program) benefits. Long lines are back at food banks as families have become overwhelmed with inflation and are returning to food banks to help feed themselves. Kathleen Kissinger was among hundreds of families Friday lined up in a car lane outside the Hazel Green Food Project. Kissinger said she’s come to the food bank about six times to pick up food for her and her son.

Red guards had provoked gunfights by their very existence, workers had fueled fascism by taking action against their employers. 'Active club' hate groups are growing in the U.S. — and making themselves seen

quote:

In late May, a group of young, male neo-Nazis converged outside a bookstore in Bozeman, Mont., to protest a drag queen story hour. Later that day, they hit another similar event in Livingston, Mont. The second weekend in June, the groups targeted the Lewis County Pride Festival in Centralia, Wash. A week after that, it was the Wind River Pride event in Lander, Wyo. And the following weekend, they were at Oregon City Pride, not far from Portland, Ore.

These men, dressed in tactical gear and masks, were members of so-called "active clubs" — a term that may be relatively new to American audiences. They are a strand of the white nationalist movement that has grown quickly during the last three years and that has recently taken their message of hate into more public view. These decentralized cells emphasize mixed martial arts training to ready their members for violence against their perceived enemies.

following up on the march update, there's more concentration camps for immigrants with ever-worsening conditions! americans have an unfavorable opinion of a dem president on the economy heading into the 2024 elections. seeing which way the wind is blowing, biden has come out in full support of genocide, so he's still in the running.

Voters want control of the border, but do they want Trump immigrant roundups and detention camps?

quote:

A recent NBC News poll found that 3 in 4 registered voters favored Congress’ spending more money on border security to address immigration.

Meanwhile, leaders in blue cities that have long welcomed immigrants complain of stretched resources with the influx of newcomers shuttled from Texas and other states. Dividing lines are emerging as immigrants who have worked for years without legal status see newly arrived asylum-seekers from countries like Venezuela get work permits.

Many migrants entering the U.S. illegally land in makeshift camps in California

quote:

INSKEEP: What did you experience?

GARSD: Well, the first thing that comes to mind is the cold. It was so cold. I was wearing a jacket, and I was freezing out there. And migrants, many underdressed, they end up making makeshift tents with pieces of tarp, sticks, old clothing. There's no water, there's no food, there's little to no bathrooms. And people get so cold they pick up brush and make bonfires. I mean, it looked like a scene from a refugee camp, but the difference is there was no infrastructure or official human aid. I mean, we're talking about as many as 300 people at a time at each camp, and many are children, and there's just no food provided. People have to go to the bathroom out in the open.

Yellen says high food and rent prices key factors in voters’ negative economic outlook

As President Joe Biden runs for reelection, this disparity between what the Biden administration sees as “considerable progress” and what voters see in their monthly household expenses is shaping up to be one of the strongest headwinds Biden faces.

Nearly 60% of registered voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy, while only 38% approve, according to the most recent NBC News poll, released Sunday.
