biden is obviously a terrible leader but i don't want to give the impression this thread is about him specifically. he's beholden to the historical and material forces that would end the american republic no matter who is nominally at the helm. similar to von papen, who was also the product of a political tradition completely inappropriate for the material conditions of his time. one thing that stands out in the wave of social media fury this weekend is that americans broadly can't seem to come to grips with the structural failures of the american empire. neoliberal indoctrination is so thorough that conceiving of forces beyond individual politicians and parties is impossible. i'd be curious to know if this was true for the weimar republic as well.
