Illmatic captured lightning in a bottle that unfortunately set the bar too high for the remainder of Nas's career, despite desperate grasps for relevance with fairly transparent gestures, such as future releases called "Stillmatic". That being said, there's so much to admire about this debut album. My personal favorite aspect is the production. It captures, if not outright leads by example, the "boom bap" 90's New York sound. It's a sound that he never quite revisited, possibly by being flung into stardom (or at least more popularity than before) and having more access to "better" production methods. This album was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. It's an undisputable classic.
