Nah. Back then, they didn't know any better.

The real horror is that we *do* know better and we are actively making things worse for us all

actively reverting to conditions before public health or sanitation or medicine were a thing so that the tiny percentage of people who benefit immensely from an obsolete economic system can continue to collect ever-increasing rents

Real horror isn't recognizing how bad things are, and how much worse they are likely to become in the near future.

Real horror is realizing that compared to historical norms, conditions even in these pessimistic expectations are still so, so much better than how the overwhelming majority of premodern humankind lived (and died).

What was accepted as perfectly normal in the past is worse than almost anyone today can really comprehend.

I think people use this thought to make themselves feel better about how lovely things are but like, it just doesn't work that way. okay sure people in the past had it worse in various ways. poo poo still massively loving sucks and is only going to get worse now. the rich surely love us gaslighting ourselves by saying 'well I have air conditioning and a fridge so my life is better than a medieval peasant's, at least'. Even if it's true it's not a very helpful thought imo.

"Surely things were much worse in the past" I tell myself as I'm strapped to the cow catcher on Warlord Scabrous Scrotus's war rig.

I'm SURE walking around in a respirator at all times in an (even more) OPEN BIDENing society is definitely not a recipe for disaster and anyone that's not cool with getting harassed by CHUDs are cave dwellers. I've got good brain!

What I don't understand is the thought of "things were worse once so it's pointless to make them better than they are now" (not implying that's your take here Kylaer, just a sentiment I hear and see often)

Right, that's not what I'm saying, I'm just trying to provide perspective. It's terribly saddening how bad things are and how much worse they're likely to get, but it's important to remember just how resilient humans are as a species and what conditions we're capable of enduring.

And I may read that book, sounds interesting.

infant mortality & labor associated mortality need to go way up before we get there. People back then still got old, but the averages were dragged down by dead babies, mom's, and kids

Exactly. The maternal mortality rate for the U.S. is (statistic from a couple of years ago) ~24 per 100,000 births, and that's considered a great shame on the U.S. compared to the rest of the developed world.

Premodern statistics are harder to find and vary greatly with location and era, as might be expected, but I've seen estimated numbers in the range of 1 in 50 all the way up to 1 in 30. 2,000 to 3,300 per 100,000, for an equivalent presentation of the statistic. And that's mothers dying, not infants. Infants do way worse.

Vice President of the Korean Vaccine Society Ma Sang-hyuk wrote in a social media post on March 16 that, “The adults who have not yet been infected with COVID-19 are those who have interpersonal problems.”

After receiving backlash from Korean internet users, Ma deleted the post; however, it had already been screenshotted and widely shared across the internet.

Ma has previously advocated for “living with” the virus and focusing on COVID-19 treatments rather than social distancing regulations.

The physician told local news outlets that his reference to “interpersonal problems” was intended to emphasize that contracting COVID-19 would be inevitable for those with relationships.

On Feb. 6, the Wall Street Journal reported on a tweet by Infectious Disease specialist Brenda Crabtree from Mexico, who made a similar comment to Ma’s, saying “If you don’t have friends infected right now, you don’t have friends.”

South Korea is currently experiencing daily COVID-19 case number increases that exceed 400,000 as deaths are reaching record highs.

Better no friends than no friends (because they all died from covid).
