this thread is for new genres and styles of rap which probably most people would not automatically include in more classic definitions of rap. i'm never going to have any of these guys on a playlist with lil wayne or dre or whatever even though its technically speaking the same genre

Yung Lean

one of the original cloud rappers to popularize the style. swedish dude who spent part of his youth in Florida getting absolutely blasted on codeine and making rap music. i come back to him over and over, he has an appealing chill style to his music and incredible tracks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWcBtHdPSKk

Lil Peep

hate him or love him, you've heard of him. frankly speaking, he's one of the most stupid looking rappers of all time, but he was insanely popular for roughly a decade before ODing on xanax and dying. nearly every white girl between 16 and 30 listens to this dude every day. i have to be in the mood for it, but its easy to see the appeal of what is basically sad music about doing drugs because you're a loser.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7sP6t1QyrI

Bones

probably my favorite overall on this thread. a smooth voice and style combined with sad, slow beats and one of my favorite music video styles. he has an iconic flow that few can match up to. i can and have listened to this man for hours on end. much more of a typical rap style than yung lean or lil b.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IYght7FGdg

POUYA

another more classic rapper, POUYA recently joined the hallowed halls of southern rappers who think they're underrepresented with his album the south got something to say, which, honestly, is an instant classic and you should give it a listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCBNYYjuYSQ

Shakewell

completing our white trash idiot trifecta is shakewell, filling out the well-trod path of fat white guy. i don't like him as much as bones or pouya but there's a couple bangers i come back to time after time. his beats are pretty crunchy and get stuck in my head a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T88YbgC-tu8

$uicideboy$

it's probably impossible to talk about zoomer hip hop without bringing up these guys. i'm not the world's biggest fan, but i do end up listening to them a lot, they have a unique and catchy style even if sometimes it's a little much for me. they honestly might be more popular than lil peep, one of those bands you keep hearing in traffic because seemingly everyone listens to them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq_SDNtWHDY

im getting tired of writing this bullshit so my last artist to mention is

Deko / Yameii Online

i don't really know what to say about Deko. he has incredibly good production, i listen to his music almost entirely for the beats, and he does have some good lyrics even if i don't always like the delivery. that said, he also performs as the vocaloid rapper 'yameii online'. despite having almost the exact same style and flow, i like yameii a little better. i don't know what that says about me. you'll see what i mean if you listen to both tracks back to back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Srf9Kvb0Gms
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsM-rOZI3TY

there's plenty of stuff i passed over in favor of hitting the 'big names'. lets talk about this. does it count as rap music, is it good, etc.

i wanna post about tohji who is a japanese rapper. i feel like he probably belongs in here. i love his verse on this track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNJi2C4M8nI

he can do both stuff closer to typical rap and more out there poo poo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4rtxlz5f24

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssVS0bU9xOo

also worth listening to is 'mall boyz' which is him and gummyboy who is another tokyo rapper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5dhhdhO4Yw

i have No idea what hes saying but hes one of my favs for his flow and just having a voice that really suits autotune. i saw him perform once in the middle of a weekday afternoon at the japanese embassy in hanoi which is this massive and sort of decrepit french colonial mansion, it was very weird but cool tho

It's up for debate whether Pharmacist is trap or phonk since I've heard both used to describe guys like this.

https://youtu.be/_YCJQG5kF3A

I also like Freddie Dread, he's sick.

https://youtu.be/HCL8eE3_BhA

I'm sure everyone has heard of the king of phonk remixes, RyanCelcius, but if you haven't check out his YouTube, he has a ton of good poo poo on there. I think almost all of it is just music videos he made for existing tracks but whatever, it's the best place to go when I want phonk and a lot of it. His mixes are good.

Think of it this way, with the windows up if it can liquefy everyone inside the car it might be trap, however if it's clearly meant to do so - it's phonk, car/drift phonk.

lol. i think most of the reason I love Deko is because his bass makes my whole car shake lmfao. I used to hate when my stepmom did that as a kid and now I understand the absolute power of turning a track up to max.
