A changer of ways

The Great city of Hammerhal, the Twin Tailed City, and the largest and most powerful of the metropolis' of the Free Cities of SIgmar outside the Mortal Realm. You recently made the trip here, to Hammhal Aqsha in the Realm of Fire. Perhaps you made your way here from Hammerhal Ghyra in the realm of Life, or elsewhere in the Realm of Fire or another Realm altogether. It was here that you met the group that you would be bound too until your death, with the exception of Caecilia who might serve beyond her fifth death. Here four of you were bound to eachother and you've now had the chance to recover before your journey.

From the City you can see the great mountains, and feel the oppressive heat of the noon sun in Aqshy. But your stay here in Hammerhal is coming to an end, today you are to meet Captain Brokka Brokkisdotr of the Kharadron Overlords. There you will board her ships Grungni's face and join the air convoy for Brightspear.
Before you head to the CInderfal district to meet her though you have your last opportunity to say your prayers, purchase any items, or just enjoy what may be the last morning you have in a long time.

Everyone: This is your last chance if you want to spend any drops or pick up anything in the city before you leave. Otherwise you can meet Captain Brokka at her ship. The trip to Brightspear should take about a week.

Golden and glorious though he may be, the young Endrinmaster found that his and his new associates divine patron had a certain ham handed quality to his craftsmanship. Not comforting when the materials he was using was your own soul. Hurriedly pushing that particular disquieting concept from his mind, Lhux pauses to admire a handsome spyglass on display before sourly recalling the diminished state of his finances and grumbles before picking out a shiny new crowbar and some essentials before pushing his way through the bustling crowds of Hammerfall toward the airship docks.

Maybe the drat heat would cool off at proper altitudes.

The good news was, the ship was ready to sail several days before her court date. One might question trying to escape charges and claims by joining a pack of randos via searing, mind shattering agony followed by getting into horrible situations over and over again until she inevitably died, but that's what she was going to do with her life anyways. At least now she wouldn't have to explain, yet again, that the Take One, Leave One bin was both for small currency and also organ donation.

It might be time to see what the rest of the crew was up to, and acquire some talc powder and extra hygiene supplies before taking off, she had a feeling she wouldn't stop being sticky and sweaty for a long time.

There was a certain truism about life--which is to say, one has to spend money in order to make money. This remains true whether you're an upstart building your fortune from the ground up, or if you're an established mogul with influence across many of the great Cities. Indeed, it even holds true as the head of a trading guild that's had... Better days, to say the least.

Losing the old boss was not a good way to adjust ownership after all, doubly so as it came in the form of being killed and replaced by some horrible gribbly--at least having enough bullets to drop a gargant at the drop of a hat managed to keep him from ripping and tearing everyone apart... And gained the attention of certain powerful figures, which leads to his current position--bound to a bunch of fellow lunatics and preparing for an expedition across the Great Parch to Brightspear.

Fortunately, Hammerhal Aqsha is and remains an excellent place to start from, being how the Realmgate in the middle of town was connected to his base that was Hammerhal Ghyra, and when you had Official Business guaranteeing you and your retinue authorized passage... Well, there was a great deal one could get away with.

Bundles of extra rations, waterskins, some bits and bobs that someone might want here and there, all packed up in a rather oversized pack cleverly strapped to him. When then coupled with his remaining supplies of Aqua Ghyranis for emergency medical assistance and/or bribes, as well as plenty of ammunition, he felt he was in a good spot for anything but the most calamitous events.

More importantly, there was a fortune to be made if he could get his own share of the trade goods over to Brightspear. The goods of Ghyran were nice to have but available in adequate quantities for anyone living at or around the Twin-Tailed City. Brightspear? Not so much.

He was sure everything would be fine though.

With her orders committed to memory, Caecilia had little to do but loiter dockside for hours. The opportunity to be bored was something to savor, in spite of the heat. She stood there in her sun hat, smoked lenses and monolithic black armor, watching the teamsters drop off supplies and the stevedores loading.

The problem was the Fyreslayer.

Assignment to cover a Binding was something new and novel, and in spite of everything, the orders were clear. The documents about the endrineer were perfectly sensible, the merchant probably had his heart in the right place, and the surgeon certainly had her head screwed on right. Soulbound could potentially live for a very long time; it was possible she'd be making boon companions for decades or centuries to come, and it was her obligation to set off on the right foot.

If Sigmar had any quantity of mercy in his arrogant heart, some day she'd forget Lethis. But even if she'd somehow put that aside, now she had four newly-minted demi-immortals on her hands, one of which wanted more than anything to die gloriously.

Caecilia stayed waiting, drumming her fingers against her thigh and counting crates as they disappeared into the ship.

The great city of Hammerhal, glimmering like a freshly minted gold piece in the Aqshy sun. The heat suited Audun just fine, but the clamoring throngs of travelers and shopkeeps hawking their wares reminded him more of a battlefield than the solemn halls of his lodge. And soon he'd be standing on the decks of an airship with his new companions - Audun didn't dare mention his dislike for heights, especially in front of the Endrinmaster, but he'd packed his favorite pipe and - he hoped - enough leaf to ease his mind for the long journey to Brightspear.

The Binding had drained him, and a week of rest would help becalm his mind. He had become accustomed to traveling alone, and seeing his new fellows dredged up nostalgic memories of his mercenary days. But something else as well: hazy half-glimpses of the time he could not recollect, lost to him like sand sieving through his fingers. He pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind, lit his pipe, and watched the loaders filing in and out of the airship's belly.

A changer of ways
You spot the sky-docks long before you reach them — six tall towers of smooth cut dark stone that reach up to the sky. Countless spiral walkways and swaying bridges link the towers to each other and to numerous loading platforms. Between this dizzying forest of stone and wood, you catch the staggering sight of the anchored Kharadron fleet.

Over a dozen Kharadron airships, from swift cruisers to colossal frigates, hang over your heads. The atmosphere buzzes with the excited sound of countless shouting voices and armoured boots clanging off the decks, as the crews of rowdy Duardin go about loading the ships.

The convoy to Brightspear is a large undertaking, but the Kharadron know how to run it. Duardin are stationed periodically on raised platforms, shouting directions and messages and able to assist you in finding Grungni’s Face. Besides the Kharadron there are a number of Freeguild soldiers, wearing the distinctive Gold Jackets of the cities regiments along with some of the Dispossessed. Even a large Saurus warrior and a diminutive Skink priest are making their way unto a ship. A trio of Knights-Venator fly overhead, briefly saluting Caecilia with their bows as they pass by. The trip to Brightspear is dangerous, and the Kharadron take safety in numbers seriously.

Eventually you are all able to find an old and battered sky-frigate with a large very angry face shaped into the prow of the ship. Standing nearby and shoting orders is a tall duardin woman, heavily tattooed and wearing well maintained armor. She recognizes all of you when you come close. "Hurry aboard!" She shouts. "Rust take us we are behind schedule, and that means loss of profits! Hurry on, hurry on!" Members of the crew come out to help you find your quarters on the ship and then get back to work. There are a few other passengers scurrying about or talking the in galley before the ship departs.

Lhux's hands ran over his suit as he settled into the cramped comforting bustle of the low decks, adjusting the straps and buckles of his rig and engaging in a relaxing inspection of his gear as he chewed on a sample of the rations he'd procured at market. God's Eye lens clean and ready for maximum output, power ingots properly connected at full capacity. So, his new very long term business associates. Interesting sorts, probably won't be boring or adverse to the exploring unconventional sources of revenue as opportunity provides. Profit is power after all, and to take his works to the next level Lhux was sure he was going to need a lot of it. Endrineering was a resource hungry profession.

Hammer pistons and cog work freshly oil, Endrin Harness properly secured to the suit and actuators in prime condition. The merchant, Boone, seemed a bit unsteady in his current position but he has a slightly charming air of optimism. Something about taking over his business abruptly and ballistically? Should get the fine details on that later, but for now Lhux will have to trust that the god of Azyr had put some care into this teams assembly. Probably. Not entirely sure about making eye contact with that (certainly legitimate) Doctor just yet but social interaction with all parties is inevitable. Pretty sure something red and thick was leaking out of one of her satchels.

Mental note, find time to expand rig power capacity and install some additional armor plating to reduce need for medical treatment to an absolute minimum. Audun the Doomseeker. Well, there's never going to be a shortage of that to find out here is there? In excellent physical condition, could likely ace even the most grueling of musterpresses. Like not to be long term relationship but here's hoping the doom he finds happens to avert Lhux's own. Finally the Stormcast. Insultingly tall, dead five times over but that's probably not a terrible average considering what he'd heard and read about the front lines against... everything. Not technically part of the binding however, apparently she's already spoken for in that regard. Here as additional muscle or insurance? A spy? A nanny? Demeanor somehow keeps bringing grandmother Grigna to mind. Slightly unnerving.

Heavily customized Aether Endrin vents clear and ready for lift off at a seconds notice, internal aether gold chemistry at just about perfection and currently suspending the admittedly bulky device to near weightlessness for ease of transport at minimum power draw. Ready to be strapped on and engaged at a moments notice. Some people, or even a lot of them, considered using one of these masterpieces and taking to the air to be some sort of risk taking behavior. Insanity in Lhux's opinion. Having your own means of high speed aerial conveyance is the only rational measure to take, means permitting. Especially on a expedition such as this, heavily armed fleet or no.

Amazing that some people think nothing bad ever happens at cloud level.

Caecilia returns the salute of the flying knights as they pass, but otherwise attempts to stay out of the crew's way while they finish preparations for departure. There's a part of her that wants to volunteer to help load up, but it seems more prudent to let the trained professionals do their job instead of attempting to interpose herself on a complex process.

She finds herself crowding out of the way near Boone.

"Master Nichol," she says. Her accent is weird even for a Stormcast, something with a lot of long vowels and clipped consonants. "I trust you and the rest of the Binding are recovering well?"

Audun Lofnir

In the cavernous dark of the cargo hold, Audun could almost fool himself into believing he was underground. He spent the morning sharpening and oiling his axes - it had become something of a ritual over the years, a small reprieve from the endless demands of an equally endless stream of paymasters, and the rasp of his whetstone was a sound as comforting as any friend's voice.

Besides, one never knew what to expect, and while these airships were even mightier than he'd credited them for at first glance, inconspicuous they were not. Audun had heard plenty of tales of ships waylaid on the journey to Brightspear: raids by pirates and smugglers hoping for large shipments of Aqua Ghyranis were not an uncommon occurrence. But it wasn't cutpurses that set Audun on edge - he and his companions were Soulbound now, and that meant that much darker forces were arrayed against them. Better to keep their blades - and their minds - keen.

The first order of business had been securing enough to space so she could actually lie down without curling into a fetal position. Iva had a suspicion that Duardin passenger vessels were designed to be too undersized for aelfs while also being able to save space and money. Too small for an aelf often meant too small for her, so the chunk of space she claimed for her self and her kit was probably on the large side. She pulls out a folding leather sign reading "DISCOUNT AMPUTATIONS, BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE (intentionally or otherwise)" this kept casual visitors to a minimum, she found. At a loss for what to do next, she found herself faced with the choice of being bored or attempting to make small talk with the first person that made eye contact (intentionally or otherwise).

"Well, no sense keeping you waiting!" Nichol laughed, beginning to slip through the crowd. He understood full well why a proper professional wouldn't want to be held up by passengers, even important ones. How much could be lost from even five minutes of delay?

More than you'd think, really.

He shifted through the crowds with practiced ease, his pack well secured as he made his way to a void in the path, a flash of shining steel and...

His brain caught up with him, as did his eyes, as he looked up, and up and...

Oh boy that's a tall lady

Now, it wasn't as though the Stormcast Eternals were unknown, you could usually see them up on the walls of the Stormkeeps that anchored each of the Great Cities, but it was one thing to see a shining demigod in god-forged plate from afar.

Another thing entirely to have one in close proximity and addressing you, personally.

Did this mean he was moving up in the world?

He lowered his hood, giving a genial nod of the head and a smile. "Well, I won't say that I'm sad to see it in the past, but the nice thing about time is that it forever takes us away from incidents best left forgotten. Everyone else seems to have adjusted well enough to boot, so I think we should be ready for anything that comes forward. Within reason of course, I'm certainly not inclined to go charging into a citadel of some twisted warlord at the moment, but the day to day business shouldn't be a problem for anyone, I think."

A changer of ways
Once the binding and the rest of the passengers are aboard the crew begin making their final preperations, soon the ship is sealed and you have taken off, joining the others of the convoy in the sky above.

Below you there is music playing and a party atmosphere of celebration as the convoy departs. The ships of the convoy sound their own horns in return, and as you pass the walls the Freeguild below shoot over a dozen cannons in salute. The atmosphere reminds you of the celebrations as a Dawnbringer Crusade leaves a city. It also reminds you of the dangers that such a crusade faces.

Once you are away from the city though monotony quickly settles in. The first mate gives you a brief introduction to the ship, or the areas you are allowed to see, and the other passengers. Once that is over for the most part the crew ignores you. They are busy enough with their own tasks. A few of the other passengers are friendly, a tall thin Aelven woman Syndra is a scholar heading to an appointment at Domini university. MIkal is a fresh faced priest of Sigmar who follows Caecilia around like a puppy when he is able to, and regards the rest of the party with reverence. A Duardin named Snorri is always trying to find someone to gamble with him.

You have a variety of ways of passing the days, but the voyage is now half way through when a low horn sounds. Immediately the crew begin to leap into positions, closing windows and preparing for something. Where are you when you hear the warning signal?

Lhux

Lhux was in the small portion of the lower deck set aside for the passengers, mostly enjoying a flight that for once he was entitled to some leisure for the course of it's duration. Snorri had kept trying to pester him into some game of chance or another for most of the morning, efforts Lhux had mostly been deflecting out of an unwillingness to admit he was presently flat loving broke. Years of grueling academy drills had the Endrinmaster reacting in a instant however, the very moment the call went up. Leaping from his stool and leaving the sputtering Snorri behind as he bolted to his bunk for his gear, ducking around scrambling Arkanauts as he went. Rapidly but carefully making each connection in precise reflexive action, it took only moments before he was battle ready. It was only as he hefted his hammer that he recalled he was a guest aboard this vessel rather then part of it's crew, but Lhux dismissed the thought. In a crisis there is no excuse for idle hands in the high airs, and he jogged for the hatch to the upper deck to see what troubles had come.

Iva didn't have a poker face so much as a "Willing to go to the hangman in order to win a petty dispute" face and Snorri seemed extremely glad when the alarm bell sounded and he had an excuse to be anywhere else and hurried out of the commons area. "Good lad," says the Stormcast. "You've got as much time as you'll ever want to get to the impossible citadels of corruption now. If you or any of the other start to feel poorly, let me know. I have an excellent recipe for rattlesnap soup that will get you back on your feet in no time."

She turns to leave and nearly runs over a priest. It only takes a few seconds of listening to him gabble and prostrate himself to know this would be a long, slow flight. Caecilia presses her mouth into a thin line and does her best to be polite, but instead of spending her days in the ship acclimating to the heat and her new wards, she's found excuses to go out of flying patrol whenever she can justify it. It's on one of those flights that she hears the warning signal, and does a quick perimeter check before heading back to the ship.

Audun had finally given in to Snorri's pestering and humored him with a game of knucklebones, and just when it seemed like he might win himself a few extra drops, there came a thundering, low-pitched horn that echoed through the decks and sent the crew scurrying.

He grabbed up his axes and tried to spot the rest of his companions amidst the chaos - the towering Stormcast made do for an easy landmark, and if there was trouble brewing, Audun wanted to see first hand if she lived up to the stories.

One of the ships crew sees Lhux getting his gear ready and nods approvingly. "Storms sighted, captain's ordered all hands to stations." She says. You are making a pass around the ship when you see the storm in the distance. appearing suddenly and unnaturally from the clear sky.right in the path of the fleet. The fleet quickly begins to change course, but you can tell already that the storm will hit, and soon.

He'd spent more than a few nights drenched to the bone and cursing whichever rainstorm had settled over his camp, but he'd never seen one like this - clouds as thick as stew, veined with strange lightning. The ship's crew hadn't mentioned any rough weather, and he couldn't imagine such expert pilots could miss the signs of a storm brewing, which meant the entire convoy had probably been caught flat-footed. That warm and fuzzy feeling.
Doc Iva

The image of the Stormcast hitting the window like a bird and then just crashing through the side of the ship enters Iva's mind and she wondered how often flying accidents happened when people even bigger than her in heavy armor suddenly ended up at the mercy of physics, magic, and just plain bad luck. She did envy her and the Duardin with the rig for being among the two most likely survivors if anything happened to the ship. Either way, there wasn't a lot to do until there was screaming to run toward.

(AT&T decided service was going to be out over here for another 1-2 weeks, and my access to star bucks, etc wifi is limited, so my posting may be spotty to non-existent until the problem is resolved, apologies)

A changer of ways
At the bridge things are surprisingly quiet as the crew works orderly. Captain Brokkisdotr is shouting orders to make sure they are heard and getting quick Ayes in return as the crew rush off to follow her instructions. A few efficient looks armored Duardin with guns have assembled and you notice that rather than trying to make any evasive maneauvers the ship is getting ready for the impact.

"I've seen this before in Chamon." Brokka says. "This is the works of the Changer, may he be cursed forever. There's no avoiding it, or the demons that are sure to be in. We'll try to keep us clear of the worst of it, but you lot need to be ready for bloody work to earn your keep."

You have a few minutes to make any preparations before the clouds hit, but inevitably hit they do. On the decks you can see other ships disappear into the clouds, and hear the noises of gunshots and screams before the cloud engulfs you as well and you can't hear anything but the wind, or see anything besides the clouds.

Suddenly the closest ship to you is suddenly iluminated as a bolt of incandescent violet lightning forks through the clouds and slams into the airship beside Grungni’s Face without warning. The unfortuante ships detonates instantly, exploding into a rippling fireball that illuminates the storm around you.

The glow of the lightning and the flames of the ship glow illuminate a group of Chaos Daemons over the deck, with a screech they dive towards the ship, the Grundstok troops let off a volley in response and manage to knock off a pair of Tzaangor's riding discs before the battle is joined.

OOC: Combat has started. For this combat we'll use the team initiative. The attacking demons have not landed on the deck yet so you'll be restricted to ranged attacks unless you are able to fly. The whole deck of the ship is Lightly Obscured.
In terms of tests I think if you want to make a reasonable test it is fine, especially with this system. We can see if it doesn't work well and change later though.

Are the Tzaangors within Medium range at this point?

Related, what dice roller do you want us to use?

Lhux

Azgildum. The garish flock of the great and prismatic shitbird himself burst into the sky around them, announcing in surety that the day was going to turn right to piss.

Lhux sucked his teeth beneath the ancestor visage of his rigs mask. The vivid storms lightning and the burning ruin of ship beside the frigate cast a surreal pallor over the scene. Hellish screechs filled the sky as metal tore and the distorted demonic cries.

Best get to it, then.

With a reflexive twitch, his endrin shot into the air toward a likely looking monstrosity as Lhux hefted his hammer for a heavy swing right at it's misshapen beak, a grim smirk on his face as the hammer's impact smashed into it's shoulder. A hideously satisfying crunch reached his ears and with a grunt of exhortation he reared back for another swing.

I'm doing a charge and attack action on I guess a Tzaangor or something with my Aethermight Hammer. 5 dice, results are 3, 1, 3, 5 and 6 with focus boosting a 3 to a 4 for 3 successes a total of 6 damage. Then I spend a mettle to attack again just to make sure I killed it. 4 dice, results are 3+1, 2, 5, 6 for 6 damage. My defense is poor till my next turn.

Caecilia

Caecilia slashes across Lhux's path, trying to pin the Tzaangors in. She doesn't strike with the crashing momentum of the armored duardin, but her blade is sharp and her aim is true.

Standard melee attack, Body 3 + Weapon Skill 1 for 4 dice, DN 3. 4, 5, 3, 3, so 5 slashing damage.

Nichol Boone

Nichol was enjoying the trip--in so much as one can enjoy being cooped up in the middle of a hot, burning coffin flying through the Realm of Fire anyway, but the alerts going up went a long way towards ruining his good feelings.

That, and the twitchy feeling going down his spine, that was important too.

So when the Grungni's Face hit the storm clouds, and the neighboring vessel went down, he was already scurrying for some manner of cover against attack, slinging a well used rifle from his pack and bracing it up against the railing. When the flying creatures began their descent, he popped up, took quick aim, and fired a shot, catching Lhux's target with the bullet (First Shot: 4d6t4 2). Spending Mettle (0/1 for T1) for a second Action Not satisfied with his first shot, he then pivoted his aim to the creature struck by Caecilia, and sent a second round into their chest. (Second Shot: 4d6t4 3)

The key to surviving a siege, in the end, was reducing the enemy's numbers as rapidly as possible, and he was well positioned to play clean-up.

OOC: Lhux's target takes 4 damage, Caecilia's takes 6 (Full success after Focus)

Audun

If he needed any more evidence of the benefits conferred by the Binding, this was it - he watched with a twinge of envy as Caecilia and Lhux rose into the air to meet their enemy while Nichol laid down withering cover fire. For now, all Audun could do was ensure that Nichol wouldn't need to worry about any Tzaangors that might try to flank him, and that if any had the temerity to land on the ship's deck, they'd taste steel.

Iva

I mean, if they insisted on just hovering up there in the sky like big dumb assholes, she wasn't going to complain. The blunderbuss rings twice, aiming for those closest together.

Mettle for 2nd attack. Rolls are 2+1 and 2+2 damage, both with spread, on any Tzaangors sharing a zone.

A changer of ways
Lhux leaps into the air with surprising speed, especially surprising to the Tzaangor who is unable to halt its momentum in time to avoid the Duardin's blow, the rising dwarf and the falling demon meet in the middle before the gor falls to the deck of the ship with a crushed skull. Another Tzaangor quickly swivles on its disk to attack Lhux but quickly has a change of plans as Caecilia intercepts the beastman, managing to wound her foe but the it manages to stay on it's disc, until it is knocked off it's feet as a bullet from Nichol find and kills it. The Trade Pioneer and Doc Iva are able to launch additoinal covering fire, killing a third Tzaangor and injuring two others who land on the deck, preparing to attack the crew at close ranger. A flock of Screamers of Tzneetch also come up over the deck and dive down and seize crew members in their long jaws, an additional two Tzaangor's with bows above the screamers prepare to make their shots

OOC: Alectai Lhux managed to kill the first Tzaangor so I just directed your initial bullet to a new one.
Second round of combat, there are 2 injured Tzaangor's on the deck and two fresh ones in the air, along with a flock of six Screamers of Tzneetch that are at deck level.

Lhux

Lhux observed the piston in the head of his hammer fire right as it collided with the Tzaangor's rapidly distorting head, a hum of satisfaction already rumbling in his throat. A simple problem resolved efficiently with the proper tools... soothing. Not that the birds were going to let him savor it as the enemy made contact with the deck below. He'd just have to trust his new crew had that angle covered for now, as he thrust forward at another grotesque bird thing trying to level a bow, hammer in hand.

"Oi! Out of my airspace you wazzock!"

OOC: Hammering on one of the Tzaangor still airborne. Regaining and spending a mettle to attack again. The results are: 5 damage and then 5 damage again.

Caecilia

Caecilia's follow-up strike lacks the sweeping dive of her first attempt, but she still manages to tag one of the beasts with her blade.

Pick another Tzaangor at random, 2 successes, for three damage.

Audun

The Screamers would be a problem, but the Tzaangors were more dangerous, and right now his priority was finishing off the two that had fallen to the deck and were making their way towards a huddle of distracted crewmen. With a shout, he rushed toward them and brought his axes to bear.

Results:Body of 4 + Weapon Skill Level 2 = 6d6 against a DN of 3. I choose to split attacks, 3d6 against each of the injured Tzaangors. I use my focus in Weapon Skill to turn one failed dice into a success. This results in 3 damage against the first Tzaangor and 2 damage against the second, along with triggering Rend on the second Tzaangor thanks to my Rune of Awakened steel.
