Vin Scully, long time radio voice of the LA Dodgers (and, really, baseball in general) died today at the age of 94. Here is a thread for celebrating all he did and accomplished.

Of course, selfishly, I will always have a soft spot for his call of the Joe Carter walk off

This is also a lovely call, where he basically tells a short story about the Dodgers crowd rallying for Denis Martinez at the end of the perfect game.

So many turns of phrase or Vin-isms or things he did bounce around in my head from growing up with him. The way he read lips when a player (I think Matt Kemp) yelled at an ump (“that’s fertilizer!”) or his fifth inning fourth wall breaking when he would tell stories, most memorably sharing the passing of John Wooden, or talking about the fan who sent him cookies to convince him to come back for the following season (somehow working divine will for his life into it, as in God saying “shut up and eat your cookie”). Will probably remember a lot more this week.

The Holy Trinity of Vin Scully, Chick Hearn and Bob Miller are one more short of life for Los Angeles

The absolute banality of sports broadcasting today is by no means any more palpable but it hurts just the same when another LA legend crosses over.

Vin's call of Game 1 1988, Kirk Gibson's walk off dinger is nothing short of spinetingling storytelling.

The mold is not only broken but no one is trying to even come close to replicating.

Woof!

I sort of feel like we lost Vin a few years ago, and it's a little easier to just celebrate him now. I don't know if there's a better example of his uncanny ability to tell a story that fills an inning than this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg5idK9bE_k

that first line, lol

Then there's the biggest brawl I think I've ever seen called in his unperturbed cadence. It's just a treat:

There's a handful of announcers or color guys I'd go out of my way to hear - Harry Caray, Keith Jackson, Milo Hamilton, John Madden. Vin Scully was not only both, he was by far the one I heard the most, because he was still around when MLB.tv first started and I would come home and put baseball on my second monitor from 5 PM to midnight, and if the Astros weren't playing at the same time I'd always go to the Dodgers game and put his broadcast on.

There will never be another like him. He had many great calls, but I liked him because he told me stories, and because he could be funny in a very understated way.

Let him tell you The Story of Mike Matheny and the Bird Poop:

I could listen to him tell me any story about any one or any thing and be rapt the entire time.

I did this too. If I was tired I'd just leave the mlbtv window open and listen to him in bed and it was just as good as watching

Number 1 Bullshit
The greatest thing about Vin is you don't think of him for iconic calls, you think of the moment instead of what he specifically said. He was perfect at letting moments breathe, but when he did speak, he always described the scene in such a way that put you in that moment.

There was never a "do you believe in miracles" or a "touch em all Joe" with Vin. And I'm not saying those calls weren't great because they were, but they weren't Vin. The way broadcasting works nowadays means there will never be another Vin, but there wasn't another Vin even when we had one. At least we had one.

"You're awefully cute, but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat." - Meat And Sarcasm Guy!
Vin Scully's voice was a huge part of my childhood. My dad used to bring a transistor radio with him down to the beach, and when he wasn't in the water he was listening to Vin call the Dodger games while sitting in his beach chair. When the Dodgers weren't' on the TV, he would watch other games with the volume on mute and just listen to Vin calling the Dodgers.

Dad was born in 1943, so he'd literally been listening to Vin call games as long as he could remember. Hats off a legend not just of Baseball or Los Angeles, but to all of sports.

*Stupid Babby*

The closest I can remember feeling down about something like this was the passing of Bob Sheppard, which was over 10 years ago now. Hard to think of another announcer who will mean as much to a fanbase as Vin.

No Muscles For The Majority
Vin Scully wasn't an everyday part of my childhood, but his voice and demeanor are iconic, and I've always enjoyed the clips I've heard, be they the famous ones, or just random things that I happen to hear.

It's interesting to compare and contrast him with the announcer who was a huge part of my childhood: Mariners announcer Dave Niehaus. In Dave's most famous moments, he's losing his mind in the moment alongside the viewers and the crowd. You felt like he was sitting next to you and high-fiving everybody. He ruled and was basically the only reason to give a poo poo about the Mariners until Griffey came along.

On the other hand, in Vin Scully's famous moments, he often backs out and lets either the tension or the celebration of the crowd dominate the broadcast, and then he comes back in at exactly the right time to punctuate the moment with the perfect statement or observation. His style reminds me more of a narrator than an announcer; he was there to frame those moments, rather than to lose his mind during them. I mean this all as a compliment, as knowing when to back out and let a moment breathe is a skill that I appreciate as I grow older.

RIP Vin Scully.
