I invented the line.

Over the past few months I noticed an influx of (for lack of a better term) "subforum tourists". I find myself very rarely leaving this place and thought to myself, maybe I should also become a "tourist".

Where are the "good" threads? What should I be reading on these dead forums? Is this as good as it gets?

I don't relish the thought of attempting to sift through GBS or CSPAM to find interesting things.

in sports argument stadium there's baseball threads for baseball, which is the best game in the history of man (no contest, scientifically proven). you should go there and get really into baseball if you aren't already.

We demand to be taken seriously

Business, Finance, Careers is full of good well moderated advice about anything money related. They’ve helped demystify investing and taxes and have excellent career advice such as how to interview. For a lighter read they have an ongoing BWM (bad with money) megathread that highlight poor financial decisions. It’s been going for years and has hours of reading material that is fun and educational: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3878671

Ask Tell has a fantastic thread on military history that is friendly to new comers, I’ve posted questions there and gotten thoughtful responses that help me to figure out why nations did what they did: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3950461

Book Barn has a history book thread with top tier reads, and excellent recommendations for books worth your time. I’m currently going through Parting the Waters about the civil rights movement that was recommended there: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3458502

The Imp zone is a great forum for people that actually like videogames. I would start with their Summer Games Done Quick thread.

Find what you like buddy.

I paid my :10bux: years ago solely for the newspaper comics megathread because it's the best place for weirdos who care about such things on the web. Didn't even know GiP existed at the time. The forums may be dead and also gay, but the signal:noise ratio is still worlds beyond goddamn reddit. I get better info faster from, for example, the few dozen posters in the woodworking thread or the k-12 teachers thread than from the thousands in the comparable subreddits. Place is smaller but better.

aside from computer toucher comisery (which it does very well), YOSPOS features the now 5 year running Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri PBEM game thread. i am both sad and relieved that i did not join as a faction at the start

YOSPOS secfuck thread and BFC negotioation thread are probably the two most valuable information sources on the entire internet.

Others I love but am too lazy to collect links for:

A/T Religion megathread is good, unbelievably good and casts a hugely wide net and everyone is respectful and truly interested in what everyone else is up to. Not a whole lot of other places you see catholics, quakers, buddhists and wiccans peacefully trading notes. Shitlords get bounced with a quickness.

A/T Aviation megathread (mostly pilots trading notes)

AI Aeronautical Insanity (mostly spectators looking at cool airplane poo poo)

The air traffic controller thread in I don't even know which sub anymore

YOSPOS bitcoin thread best bitcoin thread

[Ask] Us About Freemasonry has slowed down a lot in the last couple years but is a fascinating read if you haven't followed it

E: oh and the GBS r/relationships thread. All the fun of browsing E/N with none of the temptation to touch the poop.

That is very cool. On these very forums many years ago I helped run a few Civ III PBEM games, it was a lot of fun.

I tend to stick to bookmarks but, how do you get those in the first place, y'know? I usually go browse subforums of interest, usually the topic specific ones, and go back a few pages looking for anything interesting. e.g. SH/SC, Ask/Tell, D&D. I don't think I've actually looked in GBS in years.

(but I remember when this place had like, 5 subforums. Look at all these noobs. :regd04:)
