I remember some weird old games, like Circa 7000 which was basically WH40K without the license. I think only the shareware version exists anymore. Then there was Tower of Myraglen on the Apple IIgs were I can find records of it existing but barely and I seem to be the only person to remember it.

What weird old games trip your memory?

I always thought Ken's Labyrinth was a little weird - basically a fever dream of Wolfenstein 3D

My postillion has been struck by lightning.
I played a whole lot of goofy 90s Mac shareware games. The first that comes to mind is Bill the Demon, a platformer where you ate human souls to replenish your health bar and screamed to destroy obstacles or stun enemies. There were lots of poorly animated gory deaths, like a really cut-price Prince of Persia.

I also remember it getting a reskin at some point as "Bob the Demon". I don't know if the rework was done by the original dev or by someone else messing around with the assets, but I do remember it having a bunch of tiresome Church of the Subgenius references shoehorned in. Remember those guys? What ever happened to them? Why were they a thing in the first place? I am looking on Wikipedia now for answers and kind of wishing I hadn't.

Anyway, apparently the original author of the game remembered it and ported it to Newgrounds so it's still playable if you don't have a pre-OS X Mac sitting around or the inclination to emulate one.

in other news OP what on earth is your avatar. i mean i see who it is but who drew that and why. i'm impressed but confused

My favorite DOS puzzle game from the ole times was Brix:

More than a decade later I learned it was just a complete clone of Taito's Puzznic and not the super creative puzzle game I believed it to be for years :(

Oh, now you've gone and reminded me of Infotron, which was a Boulder Dash clone but with cute graphics and some pretty clever level designs:

I also put a lot of time into Dark Castle, an old platformer where you attacked by throwing rocks in a parabolic arc with very awkward mouse control:

...which in turn clearly inspired Quagmire, a shareware game where you played a robot with similar mechanics and had to get from point A to point B in each level:

Toyonaka Ozaki, the lead character designer for PSIII posted it on his personal website a long time ago.

yeah that tracks, it looked on-model enough to be official art but i wasn't sure why it would be. if the answer is "just because" then that explains everything

Also I just remembered Spin Doctor, a puzzle game where you control a constantly rotating wand and have to move it to the destination on each level while avoiding various hazards:

It's apparently been ported to iOS and now I'm trying to imagine how it would work with touchscreen controls.
