When my wife and I got married, my inlaws booked us a resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico using their timeshare points. We avoided the two or three sales things they tried to rope us into like the plague and overall had a great time eating and drinking and swimming. My wife may have even been an early COVID recipient (this was Dec 2019)! I ran across this video and I guess the timeshare industry is even worse than I ever knew. Apparently when her folks pass away decades from now I'll have to remember we have to explicitly disclaim inheriting their timeshare within 9 months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd2bbHoVQSM Tell me your timeshare stories GBS. Do you own one? Have you ever gone to a sales presentation for the free swag, what was it like?

I was going to post this big Rejected Parents story, but yeah - my narcissistic parents bought a timeshare at the London Bridge Resort in Lake Havasu, AZ in the late 1990s. AFAIK the weeks aren't transferrable to another timeshare, my nparents have been a collective 3/4 times, and my nmom has kept the timeshares through two separate bankruptcies. The idea of a vacation home does weird poo poo to a Boomer's brain

My foster dad would take family vacations based on time share places that offered free stays if you sat through their presentations. Better to be forced to sit through a high pressure sales situation than to pay for a couple of rooms at a Motel 6 in Myrtle Beach was his logic.

My parents finally canceled one they had for decades. I never realized that besides the initial buy-in price that they were paying annual fees that grew to almost $2000 over the years. We did lots of fun stuff at the primary site when I was a kid; like horseback riding, snowmobiles, etc. They used their timeshare to trade for a week at places like Lake Tahoe, and beach houses in southern California. Looking back at the amount of use they got out of it, it would have been way cheaper to just pay out of pocket for those activities. 40 years at $1500+/year (plus whatever the initial buy-in was) was not a sound investment.

No, but I've been to a bunch of timeshare marketing events growing up because my mom loved wasting our time on vacations going to timeshare sales pitches to get whatever thing they were offering to get you in the door. Credit to her, she did figure out how to get out of the high pressure sales mode once they finished up the tours and were just delaying you as much as possible. "I'll have to get my husband to do the actual signing, all our finances are handled by him, let me get your name and number and any other info I'll need to get in touch with you in a week" worked great. (She was a single mother, would dump the timeshare documentation in the trash the next stop after).

A family member passed away who had a timeshare in another country. To get it resolved, the executor would have had to go through a separate probate, pay an exorbitant amount of fees—even more than it was for the house—and do a metric fuckton of admin that all had to be notarized. The lawyer advised to just abandon the timeshare and ignore all the emails from them, so that's what we ended up doing, lol

My aunt and uncle sunk a bunch of money into time shares. It ends up with me getting a free week stay in Cape Cod every year, and every few years a free hotel for a week at Disney.

Bloodfart McCoy posted:So timeshares are great if you know someone who owns one? Absolutely. I would never straight up buy a time share, but if you get lucky, you can buy the points from someone trying to unload them for a cheap price. In that scenario and if the points are cheap enough, it might be worth looking into.

Went to a meeting one time for one right after my wife and I got married because they promised a stay in one just for going and we thought would be cool free honeymoon opportunity but after sitting through like 3 hours of koolaid drinking and increasingly aggressive hard sales they got all pissed and sent us to the lady to give us our free 3 night stay and it was like you could go to some lovely motel rather than an actual nice place like they were advertising in Napa and also every 12 hours youre there counted as a day so you basically got the night you showed up and then had to leave before midnight the next day We obviously never used it and essentially just got extremely "pwnd"

I had a boss who had one in Cabo and he offered it to me and my girlfriend at the time for a week. I forgot why we never went but he ended up dying and well, there went that job. I really wish I took that opportunity.

My wife’s sister was adopted and her former foster mom puts all our family up in a Wyndham timeshare resort in Orlando every December. And every year Wyndham tries to fishhook us into a timeshare presentation in return for extra nights or Disney tickets. Fortunately King of the Hill taught me everything I needed to know.

My mom was really into them. My spouse and I went to a pitch once to get the gift card they were offering, while we were at one of the locations meeting my parents for a family vacation thing. Early in the pitch they had everyone present talk about their ideal vacation, to try to match them up to something in the portfolio I guess. All of the timeshares were like... Experience oriented stuff out in the middle of nowhere, or luxury resort things in tourist towns. When we told them we liked visiting different cities, but staying in the regular parts and just sorta trying on life in a new location without a whole lot of pretension or touristy stuff, they lost their enthusiasm and just gave us the door prize immediately.

Nah, seems dumb. Like, even if you have the money it seems silly to go out and look for people to rob you.

We did book a room in NYC through them that was a shade cheaper than a similar hotel room but had to cancel. I didn't see the advantage given the price also apparently they'd try to sell you on buying when you're staying there as a guest
