Gonna be real. Preference for any other VA for Goku over Sean probably not as controversial a take as you might think it is.

You could even make a case for liking the Big Green voice actor for Goku. He sounds appropriately meathead-y.

I miss Kirby Morrow. All of the Ocean Dub Gokus were pretty good but I liked him best.

Also Brad Swaile made a pretty good adult Gohan.

Sean Schemmel's apparently kind of a jerk in person so it's not even "but he's a nice guy." Certainly not on the level of some Other ex-Funi VAs, just, well, kind of a jerk is the best way to put it I guess.

Granted, conpared to other folks in the scene, "kind of a jerk" is relatively minor

If anything he's mostly one of those kinds of actors who are overly protective of their roles and considering how touchy Toei is on the best of days he'd rather toe the line than risk jeopardizing his big name role.

It's also funny because he had a small role on like two episodes of Paw Patrol and since it was a union job, it paid him way more than he had earned in his entire stint as Goku

Yeah, some folks definitely abuse Texas being a right to work state. If you want to be a voice actor and just a voice actor you eventually leave Texas like Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, etc. or you do other stuff like direct and script adaptations.

Nostalgia used to be so much better.

Eternally shocked that the English VAs for Light Yagami and L both showed up, delivered banger performances, and did nothing of note ever again.

L's voice actor Alessandro Juliani kept busy by playing Gaeta on Battlestar Galactica, at least.

What the gently caress are you talking about? Brad Swaile has several high profile roles under his belt, including two Gundam protagonists and Alessandro Juliani, while having less voice acting roles, was a prominent character in the Battlestar Galactica reboot

It's mostly just that Ocean Group isn't commonly used for dubbing anime anymore

They're Canadian and unionized and the anime work has all gone to Texas. Ocean Group probably makes more money doing cartoons and distributing international releases than they ever did dubbing for anime.

It might just be one of those articles that ropes in interviews and quotes from all kinds of different sources, but this look back at the Cowboy Bebop dub is a fun read and had a few smaller things in it that I hadn't heard or seen before

On other topics. You know who doesn't get enough credit? Patrick Seitz. He's rarely cast in leading roles but he's usually excellent barring some exceptions (My Senpai is Annoying he just sounded off). If you need a guy with a deep voice he's your man but that doesn't stop him from having quite a good range. Recently he killed it as Handler Walter in Armored Core and he oversaw the dub for Pluto.

Patrick Seitz is the lead in REDLINE and I think he nails it. The dub and sub are both awesome watches. Spike Spencer as one of the announcers just nailed it.

The latest Naruto game's dub is like this:

Weird, right? It absolutely sounds like CC2 used AI to just cut and paste the spoken words and Maile Flanagan has already said that is not how she recorded it.

It might be poor implementation of AI voices but to me it sounds more like a Source Filmmaker or YouTube Poop style stitch dub where existing voice lines are spliced together.

It's interesting to compare the two versions of this scene. Aleks Le's version is word for word from the manga panels but Mike Haimoto's performance also deserves praise and I applaud the Sentai/Crunchyroll dub for its script. Both performances strike at the heart of the scene and it's rare to have two contemporary dubs where both are this good in their own ways.

Shame that Haimoto had to be a sex pest and this is likely the last time he'll voice Thorfinn.

CC2 said the Naruto thing was just an accident in editing and mastering. https://www.ign.com/articles/bandai-namco-working-to-fix-voice-over-issues-in-naruto-x-boruto-ultimate-ninja-storm-connections

Not sure how that works since it literally sounds like they smashed two different lines from Flanagan together but okay, I guess.

The full English dub of Cowboy Bebop The Movie is on Youtube at the moment.

Into more current stuff, there's been two excellent dubs for Frieren and Dungeon Meshi that deserve their praises:

Sungwon Cho is great as Senshi but Emily Rudd has absolutely grown on me as Marcille.

EDIT: and just because I was thinking about it, the Steamboy dub is great for Alfred Molina and Patrick Stewart throwing on Manchester accents:

Delicious in Dungeon is very good, yes. I think all of the main four are doing a bang-up job. Rudd and Damien Haas (Laios) are both pretty new to the VA scene (obviously, in Rudd's case) from what I can tell so I'm glad they're acquitting themselves.

Besides that, I've been watching Undead Unluck, the dub of which is totally passable. The main reason I bring it up is that language is relatively important in some scenes, with characters usually speaking English diegetically, and the dub handles situations where translation matters amazingly:

What dubbing studio was used for Undead Unluck? It's licensed on Hulu/Disney, right? Do they have an in-house dub group the way Crunchyroll has or the way Sentai is for HiDive?

Seems to be Bang Zoom. They don't seem to have an in-house dubbing studio, no. Though on that note, when I watched Summer Time Rendering on Hulu, that show used Roundabout Studios and they cast every single character with an Asian actor, which was kinda neat (though it did end up spoiling who the villain would be, because he was one of like two actors I recognized).

He got to voice the coolass decrepit mouth less murder robot in goated anime Pluto too, and almost ended his channel because his voice acting career was becoming too time consuming, so he’s basically riding high, you love to see it.
