Directed by: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Starring: Audrey Tautou This movie is incredibly good. Audrey Tautou (Dirty Pretty Things) plays the title character. Here's how IMDB describes it: "Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love." That's the short of it. Amelie is beautiful. My ex kept suggesting it to me for months, and after reading IMDB's line I kept putting it off as a douchy girl movie. I got bored one night, watched it, and regretted having not seen this movie months earlier. It's funny, it's "magical" and all that, and it has a midget actor pretending he isn't a midget. It is in French with sub-titles. I had no problem with this, but I know some kids hate reading their movies. If you do, then you're doing yourself a disservice. 5/5. One of my favorite movies ever.

This movie showed a naive girl interfering in other people's lives to better her own. While her intentions were good, her methods were terrible and caused a lot of people a lot of grief. If this movie were about schadenfreude, then that would be acceptable, but I found it to be obscene as it is. On top of that, it used a lot of tricks to point out obvious things that anybody with a functioning brain would not have missed in the first place, which made it feel like it was trying to escort you through the "difficult" parts. (I.E. the visual effect showing the stolen key glowing in her pocket)

Cute, both in looks and content. The "dreaming" sequence at the cafe was well done and showed how whacky she really is. Romantic.

Amelie was good, but for a really great Audrey Tautou movie check out He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.

It was a very good movie, but for reasons unknown, I just didn't "click" with it. I did enjoy it, though. I recognize the fact it was a good movie, but it's not one of my favorites. 4/5

Amelie is a quirky and warm movie. I could masturbate to the cinematography all day long. Great work from the DP.

Amelie will touch your heart even if you're a bitter, misanthropic anarcho-capitalist such as myself. A very intelligent and well-directed film, the visuals are very pleasant too. Jeunet is an excellent director, if you like this then you really should see City of Lost Children.

A great film with wonderful visual detail that proves not all good movies are in English. After the Princess Diana car crash I was afraid I was in for terrible waste of time, but I actually ended up loving what would become one of my all time favorites. Describing what this film is about doesn't make it out to what it really is...it's an experience that cannot be contained in a plot summary. 5/5

quote:Predictable came out of the closet to say: I completely disagree with this review, not just because I love the movie. I think overall she did more good than harm, and in the end pretty much everyone was happy. As far as 'pointing things out' I think it was just meant to be cute, and easy to understand. I also didn't think it was pretentious as all, and that sort of thing really bothers me so if it had been I wouldn't like it nearly as much. Anyway. This is the third and probably last time I'll say this about a movie here, but this is one of my favorite movies ever, if not my absolute favorite. It makes me feel good every time I watch it. I've never, outside of this thread, heard any bad reviews of it or heard anything bad said about it. The story is fun, clever, and interesting, it's cute (but not annoyingly-so), it's hilarious, and it's amazingly beautiful. Audrey Tautou is hot. The music is great. It's not a chick flick, although girls love it and I recomend it as a date movie. I think everyone should see it. I don't think it really matters what sort of mood you're in. If you're sad you'll be happy, and if you're happy you'll feel even better. 5/5 The Cookie Bird fucked around with this message at 05:07 on May 3, 2004 |

One of my absolute favourite movies. Everything about it is heartwarming, touching, quirky and well-done. For some, it may be heartwarming to the point of naseua, but Audrey Tatou as Amelie Poulain is sweet, gentle and gorgeous, with the perfect amount of a devilish sense of humour and revenge. I always end up in tears throughout several points in the movie such as the scenes with the child's treasure box, when Amelie dreams of someone coming through her beaded doorway, and the final scooter scene , but I believe that merely stands as an testament to the effectiveness of Tatou's performance and Jeaunet's beautiful and eye-catching directing. Also, a fantastic soundtrack that stirs up a vision of a dream-like Paris where the streets are lined with magic and mischief rather than dog poo poo. 5/5

This is absolutely my favorite movie of all time. The power of it's love story actually moved me to tears (no I'm not the cheesy cry-during-every-movie sort, either). Audrey Tautou shined in her role, and the story is very clever and visually pleasing. The soundtrack was icing on the cake. Love this movie. Voted 5.5

I can only vote a 5.5 for this movie. It's cute and adorable, and also clever and humorous. It has everything that makes a great romantic comedy, and it never gets sappy. The visual style is unique and greatly enhances the viewing experience. The excellent soundtrack really completes the movie. Must see for all. edit: I see a lot of people voting 1 and even 0.5, without ever saying why, and that just makes me sad.

This movie is adorable and Audrey Tautou is so cute in this movie(but is she ever not?). Once again Jeunet delivers a spectacular movie. I voted a 5.5 for this movie because its heartwarming and humorous at the same time. One of my favorite movies.

I can only laugh at "Boring and pretentious" because this film is neither. Rather it's a great tale brought to life by 1st rate directing and 1st rate acting. One of the most beautiful portrayals of a story ever made, better than delicatessen. It's anything but hard to watch, rather, it's an honour to be in it's presence. 5.5

Like Cast Away, a talented director and perfect actor can pull off an average story. Even less happens in Amelie, but it's a wild ride the whole way, full of colours, sounds, beautiful aesthetics, with some real depth underneath if you can stomach it...5.

When this first came out, one of the art fags in my English class kept harping on me to go see this. Well, I watched it yesterday and I can understand why. The cinematography and art direction is truly some of the best I've ever seen. And it's very engaging for such a simple story. I was a little letdown by the ending, but otherwise, this was an excellent film. four.

I really enjoyed this film, I had been putting it off and putting it off but I'm glad I finally saw it. There are lots of little things that are brought to your attention. I like the slightly disjointed(?) style and the art direction was great. The story was spectacular in my opinion, you really got to admire some of these characters and end up being pretty satisfied with the ending. Definitely something you should check out and watch at least once, but you'll probably end up wanting to watch it again.

I put off watching it, like many people, apparently, because I thought it was a sappy romance movie that I would have no interest in watching. My girlfriend forced me into watching it one day, and I really enjoyed it as a dark comedy. Yeah, she does lots of nice things for people, but man, she does some hosed up stuff too. The one scene that stands out for me, and made me give this movie a 4.5/5 instead of a 4/5 was when she finally tracked down that dude in the beginning and put his box of toys in the phone booth, and he saw it and started crying. I don't know why, but I really like sentimental things like that. The ending was very satisfying as well.

This is a director that takes concepts that could very easily be "pretentious art-house" flicks, and brings them to a more developed place. Amelie lives in a Paris that could never exist, but I don't think it detracts from the story. The people who've said that she was naive and even a bit evil in parts are absolutely right, but it adds depth to the characters and encourages the viewer to think of it as something more than a romantic comedy. 5/5

I just didn't see how it was that good. It was an okay time waster, but I probably won't watch it again. Most of the plot was predictable, but there were a few immensly funny scenes. I'm not gonna vote my choice, as I'd probably face a lot of flak for it. But if I would give it a grade, it'd be 2.5 starbabies.

When people say something is a "feel good" movie it is usually pretentious marketing drivel. Amelie is an honest-to-god "Feel Good" movie because if you have a soul, it will make you feel good by the time it is done. The worst part of the movie is the crushing dissappointment you get afterwards knowing that you will never have Amelie as your girlfriend.

One of my favourates. My friend suggested this and I didn't take her up on it, then another friend (who's a guy and pretty macho and normal) told me it made him want to fall in love. That convinced me and I saw it, loved it and bought it. Watch this with a member of the oppisite sex and you will be together forever.

A fantastic movie in every sense of the word, honestly. Having only a certain amount of events happen in the first 7/8ths of the movie, the end seemed unjustifiably rushed by having virtually the same amount of events happen in the last eighth. That's really my only complaint, it was a great film otherwise. 4.5/5
