To add on to the Bomb the Music Industry! idea, their sole member has started up a record label dedicated to free sharing of music. It's called Quote Unquote Records and right now there's one rock album up for free download by The Matt Kurz One, who plays five instruments simultaneously. At 11PM EST tonight, the new Bomb the Music Industry! album will be up for free download as well.

I think that the following would be awesome: A two week long contest to make a totally free mix CD within NMD. The entries would either be compiled into a zip folder and hosted somewhere free, or listed link by link in a list format. There would be a 30-35 min-max. There could be a theme (rainy day, beach barbeque, rear end shakin'), and contestants could be required to write a description and provide cover art. The best 4 or 5 could be compiled and hosted, and then have a forum wide vote in GBS. Any mods have opinions on this?

Scorched Earth Tactics SET was introduced to me in this thread. They have everything they've recorded (which isn't that much, unfortunately) up for download. Their reasoning is that, at the level they're at right now, exposure is worth more than sales. I don't know how to describe their sound other than saying that it's brutal, tight, technically brilliant metal. I highly suggest signing up for their email list, which gets you access to another promo, because the first song on the promo is my favorite, and the fourth track is a Sepultura cover. Also, if for nothing else, "I'm Dreaming Of A Grind Christmas" is the best 40 seconds of Christmas music I've ever heard. And if Metal isn't your thing, partially-goon-run Comfort Stand Recordings is an enormous source of free music (though they've stopped adding any new music.)

My friend has a pretty good band based out of Chicago called All Things Lucid. They just put out a sample EP with some alternate versions of their normal line up. Normally you'd only be able to get it at shows, but they let me rip it for you guys. It's an alt-country-folk-rock-blues band. Give it a listen and kill my bandwidth here. Hey, it's free.

I post nearly all of my work online for free. I'd rather people listen to it than make money off of it. It is in a pretty tight niche, as far as sound goes, so it isn't like I'd ever sell a ton. It does seem to hold up well to critical review. I'd love for people here to check it out. It is largely ambient and soundscape stuff: Life Toward Twilight *Edit to add more: 9.38khz has some great 8-bit albums for free download. Highly recommended. Saskrotch video game breaks. Good stuff. Catch his live set if you can. Minibosses 8-bit Nintendo covers. I assume most people have heard them by now if they are interested in this sort of thing. But if not, the Megaman 2 track is a must download. Webbedhand Records one of my more favorite "net labels". Mostly abstract, experimental and ambient.
