2.4 GB and 854 MB torrentsss of bands that played this year at SXSW (not live, just demos). http://2006.sxsw.com/toolbox/schedules/ipod/ The genre tagging pretty much sucks, but when does it not?

Yet another electronic music netlabel thing checking in: http://evilresidence.com Our stuff is mostly weird/experimental music, with numerous forays into stuff like downtempo, IDM, ambient, noise, techno and other random genres. All 32 of our releases are available (under a creative commons license) on the Internet Archive.

Also worth meantioning, although it's not necessarily "promo" material - https://www.trashtreasury.com - filled with tons of live Elliott Smith performances. I recommend Live In Stockholm (1998) and the unmastered, unreleased, studio demo From A Basement On The Hill II

You can grab the promo CD for Deaf in the Family titled For Those About to Rock, a collaboration from Brookyn production team The Resource (DJ Sae One and Adam Podrat aka Mr. Ling) and a host of underground MCs including Scavone, Bavu Blakes, Pumpkinhead and more. Their 10-song promo CD features remixes of classic rock tracks -- from The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" to The Who's "Who Are You", nicely flipped. This isn't really a mash-up; it's better. Go to their website here and sign up for their mailing list. They'll send you a link to a directory where you can dowload all 10 tracks plus the album art for free.

If you're into the micro/noise/glitch stuff: http://uhfest.underground.hu/ This is most of the performances from Ultrahang Festival 2003, in Hungary. Yes, I know what Ultrahang connotes over here, but I guess nobody told them. I like the Kid606, Andrey Kiritchenko, and Sheriff sets the best, but Kim Cascone and Vladislav Delay are also good.

http://www.shimmerkids.com/music.htm The Shimmer Kids Underpop Association has disbanded and most of the band members are now in the Society of Rockets. They've rather generously made available what seems to be everything by the Shimmer Kids. Pitchfork says the band has a musical sensibility ignoring anything post-Beach Boys. Whatever that means. I especially like Bury My Heart at Makeout Point and Prairie Prayers.

Buck 65 has released a free downloadble mixtape called "Strong Arm". It's available from: http://www.buck65.com/secrethouse/multimedia.html "Strong Arm is a "mixtape" in the New York-style underground hip hop sense of the word... with a twist. None of the instrumentals are from hip hop records. The music comes from the worlds of punk, classical, folk, library music, everywhere else. It was recorded in a day on a budget of $0 and it shows. This is a scrappy piece of work. There are loud vinyl pops, mistakes, vocal glitches... In other words, it's very lo-fi." (from the Project Notes) Edit: Might aswell mention this aswell. http://www.darkwinter.com has a bunch of free releases in the dark ambient genre. They're all under the creative commons licence, and there's a lot of good stuff there. Rush Limbo fucked around with this message at 09:03 on Jul 26, 2006 |
