Bah, beaten by 20 minutes! La Haine: been wanting to see this for a long time, actually the previous release is already in my Netflix queue. Overlord: I know nothing about this or its director. Brute Force: The only Dassin movie I've seen so far is Rififi, but I'm interested in all the others. So three entirely new ones for me, that's pretty cool. The people at criterionforum.org are speculating from a recent blog that Eclipse Series 2 will be Louis Malle documentaries, but I haven't seen any real evidence to support that.

Also, the newsletter apparently (I'm STILL not getting mine, argh!) hints at an upcoming release of San Soleil, possibly with La Jetee, and maybe even 12 Monkeys. The current disc for 12 Monkeys is pretty excellent, although Criterion does have a relationship with Gilliam so it's not out of the question.

It's pretty explicit in the blog. Peter Becker posted:The “vacation in your living room!” approach may be a cliché at this point, but it’s also a rather fitting introduction to a body of work that did indeed transport me: Louis Malle’s documentaries, which we’ll be releasing as the second Eclipse series this Spring, and which have been somewhat under the radar over the past forty-odd years, certainly in comparison to his fiction films. Unless he's lying about it, I don't see any reason to belive that Malle's documentaries won't be the second release. Semi-random: does anyone know what the quality of the Fox Lorber La Collectioneusse DVD is? I really don't think I can afford the Criterion Rohmer box anytime soon, but I don't want to buy a DVD with a poo poo transfer just because I'm impatient.

I think I'm most excited about the two Kon Ichikawa films being released, The Burmese Harp and Fires on the Plain. Has anybody heard any rumors or speculation that Criterion will continue releasing Ichikawa's films, particularly An Actor's Revenge, which is one of the best movies I've seen that remains unavailable on DVD?

It must. Some people are gonna be very happy about this. I'm not a big Fassbinder fan, but I need to check out more of his work. I've heard great things about this one. Hollywood Reporter confirms that "Future releases in the Eclipse line include rarely seen films from Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse, Yasujiro Ozu and Raymond Bernard." I wonder if the Mizoguchi set will be early stuff, or more canonical titles like Sansho and Oharu. Either way, that's a definite purchase for me. 5/15/07: Shohei Imamura's Vengeance is Mine. I've seen a couple of Imamura films, and wasn't especially blown away, but of course I'll watch this one anyway. Stars Ken Ogata, who was excellent in Mishima. 5/15/07: Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows, in a 2-disc special edition. This ought to make some folks happy. I missed the recent theatrical release, but I'll definitely check out the DVD. 5/22/07: Kenji Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff. One of Mizoguchi's best, really looking forward to this one. Also, David Ehrenstein posted at criterionforum.org that he's written the liner notes for a Criterion release of If.... Not one of my favorites, but I'll give it another look.

These movies are all piss-yourself-good, but as someone who isn't region locked I feel a little disappointed that they're essentially all rereleases of available films (which exist in excellent editions to boot). Only 'Sansho dayu' isn't out yet, but that's been a known future MoC release for awhile, and it's coming in a box-set with four other Mizoguchi films. 'If....' is, of course, wonderful news. It's hard to believe such an important film has never been released on DVD anywhere. I kind of wish it had stayed with Paramount, since they've been doing great work lately and it would cost less than half of what I expect the Criterion will go for.
