Yeah yeah, Bose is overpriced and sucks comparatively. Sounds great in the room, and I'm happy with them.

Yeah - 37" is a carry over from dorm life back in school. It's definitely small. 46" is the ideal size for that room and viewing angles. Will hopefully be picking up a Samsung on Boxing Day

For TV and movies in my room, I just use my PowerMac (w/ eyetv tuner) + a JVC ministereo I got for christmas once + Apple Cinema HD 30". The audio switch ontop of the stereo is to switch between computer audio and cellphone audio (I use my cell as an mp3 player) For movies I've got a Philips ProScreen somethingorother. Video sources include a cheap VCR used as a tuner, a Philips DVD/DivX player, and the most-used: an XBMC. Screen is a king-sized bedsheet, the picture covers the full width of it. There's also a 32" SD CRT for watching regular TV. You can see the Xbox here. That note stuck to the sheet is a message from the fire department warning that draping it over the TV is a clear fire hazard and should not be done. Audio comes from some old Yakima receiver, and a pair of busted-up speakers. kalleboo fucked around with this message at 11:08 on Sep 4, 2007 |

Here's my setup with my new LCD: Sharp LC37D43U DVD player: Pioneer DV-353 Receiver: Kenwood VR-509 Fronts: Paradigm 5se Surrounds: Paradigm Atom Center: Paradigm CC-70 I'm pretty pleased overall; the front speakers are getting pretty old (I inherited them from my dad who bought them close to 20 years ago, if not longer) but they still sound really nice. They make enough bass that I don't need a sub, especially in an apartment. I need to angle the center speaker up a bit, it's kind of low and I think it's affecting the audibility of dialog in movies.

Okay, here goes. First off, yes, I'm in high school. I live in my parents' house. Hahaha, yes it's funny. So this is my room. And for the super-fun-all-time bonus: While it may not look the prettiest, I'd like to think that my system gives me the best bang for my buck. All eight speakers are hooked up to the record player (with some help from the subwoofer, which is also an amp), because I like vinyl better than records and it's just so much more satisfying. Vinyl, I mean. Anyway, I havn't paid more than around $50 for that whole system, because I got the record player and all of the speakers at ValueWorld, a second-hand shop that sells electronics for cheap. It also helps that I found the subwoofer in a Kroger's parking lot, in the rain (Kroger's is a Midwest lovely grocery store). So that's that. Tell me what you think?

I'm not going to post a bunch of pics yet because the room is nowhere near where I want it to be, but I have to crow a little at my setup I just launched this week. Understand that I'm in the middle of switching jobs, have two kids and own a house, and my wife is still getting her own business off the ground; as a result, getting together the funds for a decent theater setup has been problematic. That said, I may have set some sort of record for the best-bang-for-buck theater setup ever. Video: Bumped into the Optoma EP716 at Best Buy, an entry-level projector that's designed for business presentations but is certainly capable of basic home theater work. Normally $699, it was inexplicably on sale for $279.95 (new in box!). I had a $100 Best Buy gift certificate and pounced. Total cash out of my pocket (not counting the GC which I got in a sales contest): $179.95 Audio: One of my wife's cotenants gave her a complete Sony home theater system, the HT500D for free. While obviously an entry-level setup, I'll take it. Total cost: $0 I wanted to mount the projector on the ceiling, of course, but didn't want to dish out $150 for a mount on EBay or elsewhere, so I went DIY. Mounting the projector required these esoteric little machine head screws that aren't carried by Home Depot etc., but after a bunch of research I learned that they're carried at R/C shops for model airplanes and poo poo. For the base I used one of those 1 cm thick plastic cutting boards, carved out the mounting holes with a Dremel, and voila. Total cost: $28.00. For the screen, I hit Fabric Depot for 3 yards of blackout fabric, and Home Depot for some 6' poplar 1x2"s. I recently inherited a miter saw that made construction of a 54' x 72" frame a snap. I was surprised by how easy it was to get a good tight stretch on the fabric and a staplegun didi the rest. The screen now hangs from the ceiling for an image of around 90". Total cost: $35.00 So I don't have 1080p or anything, but (I changed my mind, I just took a pic) I do have this: (DVD case propped up beneath the screen for scale) for a grand total cost (yeah, I should be counting the gift cert, but as far as cash out the door, that and the audio gear was $0!) of $180+$28+$35 = $243. The speaker set is fine for me right now, and at that insanely low total cost I can easily justify upgrading to an HD1000U or something a year or two down the line. I just wanted a huge gorgeous image in time for the NFL, and boy have I got it. Woo hoo! I had lighting issues getting a decent shot of a movie playing. The EP716 throws 2000 lumens and in a darkened basement setting the image is sharp and vibrant. The next step will be partition walls all the way around to hide the foundation walls and that ugly storage poo poo behind the screen, and painting the concrete floor. Actual dimensions of the room are approx 10' by 18'. I have a PC, Xbox 360 and PS2 hooked up, and a Harmony universal remote running the show. Stoked particularly on the screen. Those of you dealing with hanging sheets, dig up the $30-$40, track down a couple of tools and give it a go. Took me about 90 min working solo start to finish. There are plenty of solid walkthroughs online. old rivetz fucked around with this message at 04:43 on Sep 16, 2007 |

Mermaid Autopsy posted:Nothing wrong with that, but he better trash that shoddy plastic eighties all-in-one turntable as soon as he can. Speaking from experience, those things are the absolute loving worst. Really? I mean, I dunno, mine has worked fine for me so far, and I never listen to the radio. It records vinyl to tape, too, albeit shittily. And then I can play the tapes in the boombox, so... I dunno, the only alternatives cost hundreds of dollars (usually), and the needle quality isn't to bad, either. And that's much easier to replace than the whole thing. I figures I'll probably end up using it until the motor runs out. Maybe not, who knows? The only problem I have with it is that a few weeks ago, I closed the top dresser drawer underneath it and the crappy backlight on the display on front turned on. Great, but now I can't get it to turn off, which is a pain in the rear end at night. I've taken to piling crap in front of it, which is pretty plainly visible in those pictures.

Reggie Died posted:You've tickled my curisosity. I like what I see, but could you post another angle of your room? No problem: The lighting isn't as nice in this one because I had to use a flash. I am just using a white wall to project on, so the front side of the room (left in this photo) isn't too interesting. Nevermind the dust on the tops of those speakers I know the room looks strange with the bright white walls, but because I'm in an apartment, I can't paint them a darker color. In the next six months I hope to buy a house, and then I'll set up a more permanent theater room, with wiring in the walls, darker colored room, etc. My lightbox is not visible in the new photo, but that looks like this: Gambl0r fucked around with this message at 00:38 on Sep 17, 2007 |
