Do not try and score on the powerplay. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.

What truth?

There is no powerplay.

I'm curious too. Every warped I have been to everyone gets 20 minutes except the guys who win the extra 10 minute thing. Hell they even cut LTJ off one year for going over, and they were the last band of the day to play.

I guess the Murphys and the Bosstones added a few more dates to their tour and they are now playing in my town! Tickets still available for Sterling Heights, MI; Columbia, MD (outside Baltimore); and Sayreville, NJ.

I just bought tickets, I'm super excited now. And the Less Than Jake/Goldfinger concert next Monday. This is a great year for shows for me. :) I'm going to the Maryland Murphys/Bosstones show, if anyone else from the area is attending.

The first (and last) time I ever went to Warped Tour, we showed up at like 2 when we thought things were going to start, looked at the schedule, and found out that Reel Big Fish (one of the only bands I wanted to see at the time) had played at like noon, well before anyone else on the schedule.

The clear lesson here is not to go to Warped Tour.

I've just recently got into ska; shame on me, I know. I'm a UK goon and not only was I unable to get tickets to LTJ, I also see I've recently missed Streetlight. :smith:
Can anyone recommend me some good shows coming up in the UK (south)?

On a similar note, can someone recommend me some new bands to listen to? I've got the entire LTJ catalogue and almost all RBF. Currently downloading some Mustard Plug and Bosstones, TMT also sounded very good.

Also, Somewhere In The Between might just be the best album I have ever heard.

It looks like the Slackers and the Pietasters are doing a tour in the UK in late June and early July, that'd be worth checking out. The Slackers are a really amazing live band. The Pietasters used to be really amazing but they've gone way downhill, you might catch them on a good night though. There aren't too many UK bands I know about but I've heard a lot of good things about Sonic Boom Six. I didn't really care for the stuff on their myspace but they're worth checking out. There's also a band that somebody posted they were in a while ago (sorry I don't remember their name) called the Lockup that are pretty awesome. I was gonna suggest Howards Alias as well but turns out they just broke up. Check out those bands myspaces/websites for their tour dates, and it looks like https://www.moonskaworld.com shows a lot of the big tours coming around.

There's lots more, but a few to start you off, with album recommendations:

Buck-O-Nine - Twenty-Eight Teeth
Mad Caddies - Quality Softcore
Big D and the Kids' Table - try either Good-Luck or Strictly Rude

And yes, I too am in love with Somewhere In The Between.

Unrelated: I finally picked up the Bosstones' A Jacknife To A Swan last night and I am really enjoying it.

Seems the Slackers are in London on July 4th. However, I'm at shows on both the 2nd and 3rd already, so I don't know if I can do three nights in a row, especially with it still being term time for me. Their sound wasn't too bad though, a bit more reggae and less punk, which isn't exactly my favourite.

You should check out the Arrogant Sons Of Bitches. Really good ska-core from Long Island. Their MySpace has mostly live tracks and rarities, but there are some quality live videos on YouTube:

Also, ASOB's lead singer, bassist and drummer are all at the core of Bomb the Music Industry!, who you have no excuse not to listen to. I think their fanbase is still growing. And as it is, the only two ska bands with more drawing power at the moment are RBF and LTJ. The real way I know they're catching on is that their shows also actually draw an over-21 crowd, which is really hard for a ska band. I saw them two times on the last tour in Philly and Chicago (I was in town on business), and I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout. And constantly disappointed that no one knew who Dan Potthast was :(

Whoa whoa whoa. I love Borders and Boundaries, but it's no Losing Streak, even if I'd rank it second. But I'm loving the new album. I've been listening pretty much non-stop since Friday. I've been describing it as a coherent amalgamation of all their previous albums. Although, I'm now starting to think of it as a more coherent, better produced, more horns having version of B is for B-sides. Which is a good thing. I'm also glad to know that I'm not the only one to go overboard and order both the limited edition vinyl with art print and the CD/t-shirt.

So random question...is anyone here looking at going to ska weekend this year, and if so whould anyone be interested in splitting a hotel room for the night after the show?

I always keep thinking about going, but unless they're not done revealing the line-up, it's not quite enough to get me to travel all the way to loving Knoxville.

The Hippos keep getting brought up, and I just wanted to mention that I finally found a copy of Forget The World. I got interested in them in high school, mostly through "Please" being on Mailorder is Fun! and "Far Behind" being on Where's The Beef? To put how long I've been looking in context, I did see a copy of it in The Wall in the mall, but it was 18 bucks. "18 bucks, that's ridiculous, I can find it for cheaper!" And I never saw it again, and never thought to try mailorder until after it was OOP. I travel a lot for my job, and one of my main hobbies is browsing used CD stores, so I've been looking heavily for over 2 years now. So imagine my shock when I walk into a store I had only been in like a month prior in Tucson, AZ and flipped the "HI" tab forward to see it sitting there. After looking for almost 9 years (NINE!), I almost screamed in joy. All that said, I still think Heads Are Gonna Roll is a better album.

The only problem is now I have my holy grail. I need a new CD to fuel my CD browsing. I found Jeffries' Fan Club's Nothing to Prove about a year ago, and I'm struggling to think of another hard to find ska CD, although the Impossibles Anthology is a possibility. Any suggestions? I'm thinking along the lines of Spring Heeled Jack, Edna's Goldfish, mid-90's ska-punk that's OOP. Or does anyone else have a CD they've never been able to find?

There have been quite a few CDs that eluded me for a while, but for the most part I've managed to nab copies of them. There are a few that, despite not listening to those bands anymore, I'm really glad that I was able to get for regular (sub $15) prices, such as The Scholars - The Last Great Record of the 20th Century and The Pharmaceutical Bandits - Those drat Bandits. Then there are others that I'm afraid that I'll wear out one day, like the Moon Ska pressing of Hepcat - Out of Nowhere and See Spot - Is There Any Love in Your Ska?.

The one CD that I'd really like to acquire, though, is the Sequel release of Prince Buster - Fabulous Greatest Hits. It has such a great track listing compared to the other versions out there.

They're traditional ska and rocksteady. Probably one of the top Boston bands. Their music is so.. peaceful, but catchy. It's not reggae outright, though they do have a couple of very downtempo songs. On average their music generally ranges between 120bpm-160bpm.

And yeah I've heard Somewhere in the Between too. Strangely, while Big D's singer has never irritated me, I am completely turned off by Streetlight's lead singer, and the band's unrelenting 300+ bpm tempos just don't appeal to me. I know that I'm not in the majority here, but I just can't get into them at all.

With a lot of people requesting bands, I'd like to recommend Leningrad again. It's Russian ska-punk from St. Petersburg, blending a beautiful horn-section with vodka-driven chaos and raging, frenzied vocals. And going from Whole Wheat Bread -> Westbound Train -> Streetlight Manifesto didn't work at all on that tour. And the crowd wasn't into Westbound at all, which really sucked. I unfortunately didn't know about them prior to that show, wish I did.

I wouldn't listen to WBT when I'm in the same "mood" to listen to SM.

But if you're trying to find another 'Holy Grail' record, start looking for 'Age of Insects' by the Skandalous All-Stars.
