I'm also thinking about getting new shocks/springs for my NB since the ride seems a little harsh nowadays. I was thinking of going with the FM Stage I kit and upgrading to ground controls along with it so I can lower my car nicely. It's gonna be for pretty much street use and I'm young so I don't mind it being harsh. Any advice? I also need brakes so I'm going with the Hawk HPS, any troubles with these before I pull the trigger?

Amir posted:Do you think they're still good after they've been ridden around on for several years due to the PO not realizing the shocks were blown? I kept my springs. I choose the 54mm progressive as they work very well with the stock springs. I can barely tell when I'm touching them. I also don't see how the bumps would be that badly damaged anyway. You should be tossing them regardless. http://www.fatcatmotorsports.com/igallery/graphics/CHART_FCM_46_54_vs_63mm_NA_1.JPG EDIT: My suspension goals were more for comfort and ride composure/body control than anything else. I only autocross 6-8 times a year and do it for fun more than anything else. The Tokico/FCM Bumps did a very very good job of freshening up my ride quality. I look forward to bumps now as I can feel the suspension working instead of it just giving up. I still have FM Swaybars waiting to go in. A fellow at autocross said they transform the car. OK, as I understand it this is your setup (let me know if I missed anything): Tokico Illuminas Stock Springs FCM Mounts 54mm progressive bumpstops Also, any reason you got the Tokicos from FM? They're cheaper on eBay and other places like shox.com

FM actually sent me 3 front shocks and 1 rear. But they took care of everything so it wasn't an issue. I asked Tokico and they said eBay warrantys weren't valid. And For the hassle I would rather deal with FM. They've given me some great help and advice in the past and I had never even purchased anything from them. EDIT: Oh I got FCM Boots too since I drive my car in the winter. There are alot of "Stock spring Tokico/KYB" threads on miata.net to read if you want some reactions and reviews. Both Keith from FM and Shaikh from FCM recommended spending the little extra money to get the Tokicos over the KYB. Right after I bought mine FM dropped the KYBs. I have a minor issue, perhaps someone has run into it before. My driver's side window washer nozzle leaks whenever I take the car on >15min drives. It's a very minor leak, but nonetheless anytime I take it out, I get out to find a good few drops of window washing fluid on my hood. Any suggestions? My first thought is that perhaps the reservoir is overfilled and the heat from the engine causes expansion and is as such forcing it out the nozzle slowly. ..Is this realistic? I just purchased the car, and perhaps it was previously overfilled. The reservoir is definitely full, but not to the tip top either. Any thoughts would be great, its not a huge hangup, but it does annoy me.

Has anyone else had a pain in the rear end with new accessory belts? Both of mine were fried on the '99 so I swapped them out today, and for both belts I had to go longer than specified by about an inch or so, new ones of the official spec would just not go on there. I think part of it may be the fact that I went for the Goodyear Gatorbacks - I swear these belts are thicker than anyone else's, and they fit tighter as a result. Edit: gently caress me, apparently I didn't get everything tightened down all the way since while they didn't squeal yesterday on a 10 mile test drive, they started squealing this morning. Why couldn't you have used a serpentine belt, Mazda? IOwnCalculus fucked around with this message at 17:43 on Jun 16, 2008 |

There's a 2000 MX5 for sale near me with 102k miles that I'm thinking of buying, but it's been for sale for at least 2 months, in which time it's gone down from £4000, which is fairly average for that mileage/age, to £2990. It's in good condition and visually there's nothing I can see wrong with it, I'm just wondering why no one is buying it. It could be because it's not listed on their website (they specialise in imports and only have 4x4 and MPV categories listed and that's all anyone would see driving past), or that the MOT is running out, but if I take it for a test drive is there anything to look out for which might be putting other people off?

On a related note, is the FM Stage 2.5 kit streetable? I wrote them an email but haven't gotten a response yet. The cost of buying all this stuff separately is adding up and maybe I should just buy it all as one package from a reputable dealer. However I am worried about having a harsh ride...

Make sure they are talking about the second generation FM springs though.

What's worrying me is the fact that there are too many options and not enough actual data. I had no idea that it would be that low and it seems that there is no clear and concise source of information. It would be really nice to find task-oriented package suggestions: if you want a DD for comfort only do <x>, if you want a DD + tight handling do <y>, if you want an autox monster do <z>, etc. Sadly there is no such thing!

I have an Optima Red Top battery in my Miata, and it appears to have gone completely dead somehow practically overnight (worked fine on Sunday, wouldn't even attempt to start today). I didn't leave my lights on or anything (if I turn them on now I hear a clicking sound, and they don't come on). It jumped fine and ran fine afterwards (lights and stereo and everything), but the battery was still dead when I turned the car off after the drive. Is the battery just cooked or is there something wrong with the alternator too? The lights wouldn't run with a dead battery and a dead alternator right? Some research tells me that if the Optima gets fully discharged (how it got fully discharged is another mystery), the alternator won't be able to charge it back up even after a jump and a long drive. If I buy a trickle charger will I be able to just charge it up and be fine? The battery is only about a year old it should have tons of life left. Can I hook up the battery from a Mercedes 230SLK to my car to see if it starts up fine with a known good battery, or is there some kind of incompatibility?

Make sure your battery cables and posts are clean and connected tightly. I don't know how the Miata negative terminal is grounded to the chassis, but give that a good look and check for pinched/frayed/corroded wiring. Optimas take a long time to charge via trickle, so its more likely you have current and voltage limiting corrosion or damage.

Also check to see if you're low on water in the battery; might be low on electrolytes. On second thought, put in some Brawndo 'cause it's got electrolytes.

I'm still looking around for a miata, and have seen some really nice 10th anniversary editions. however, a lot of them have "style bar" rollover protectors. i seem to remember them being referred to as "rat-traps". is there any truth to this? I mean, having a roll bar sounds like a really good idea, but I don't want to end up crushed between my car and the bar in the event of a rollover.

You can get a new Hard Dog rollbar (at least in June, shipping is free at one vendor, can't remember offhand) for $400 shipped. I wouldn't not buy a car just because of a style bar.

I've noticed recently (since it's slowly becoming top-down weather) that when I go over bumps or cracks in the road, a quiet sort of metal-on-metal clank is coming from the front of the car, I think. It happens as the front wheels hit whatever jarring imperfection in the road. I'm thinking/hoping it's just that something like a brake dust shield or similar is loose and knocking around. The car otherwise drives like it always has, no shimmying, no shaking, no weird handling characteristics. I'm due for an oil/trans/diff fluid change, so I'll be lifting up the car soon and I'll try to find any play in any parts then. But does anyone have any guesses as to the most likely culprits might? If you end up buying one with a style bar, just take it off and replace it with the factory seatbelt tower brace (which hopefully the seller has kept). I wouldn't want a fake rollbar on my car, either. The only downside is that some style bars require cutting part of the plastic around the seatbelt towers, so it may or may not bother you with the style bar removed.
