I just checked and the center of the mount is almost exactly 64" above the floor. I think that is more a function of its size than anything. A 32 inch television sitting center at 64 is going to seem a lot higher than a 52. To be honest I think what you have looks fine. I also don't have a problem with piers or stands under wall mounts. I see them as simply a way to hang a tv. I think the ability to angle and rotate them is the strongest point, and one that you can only get with a wall mount or a stand mount. My friend has a 60 inch on a rotating mount because he is a big vertical shmup fan. It is pretty crazy when you see him rotate his 60 inch tv vertical. I personally have a fixed mount screen for my projector and a LCD. My screen is 64" AFF but I run my LCD below it at about 28". We mostly use TV for gaming or casual watching though.

64" AFF is retarded. my uncle had a 65" panny plasma installed by magnolia and im going to guess the 64" AFF rule is what they used, their family of 6 (and i) agrees that the plasmas a little too high, and thats with a friggin 65" plasma. Anything smaller and you would have to crane your neck back even more and sink back into the chairs as far as possible. Unless you have some ginormous 100" screen in a dedicated home theater room i cant even begin to imagine how the 64" AFF would be appropriate for when youre sitting on a couch.

Some day I shall get its TV tuner running and then the PVR gets sold. Old silver Panasonic amp that doesn't have HDMI and only auto-switches one of its optical inputs to 5.1 - it needs replacing) KEF egg speakers The small lump between the xbox and dvd player is the IR reciever for the htpc, so it can all be controlled by my universal remote. For non-MediaPortal I use Synergy from a laptop so that I don't have to have keyboard and mouse on the coffee table any more. Also shown: Ursula.Andress.720p

But I honestly didn't realize how much heat was being generated between the two units, so I expect that the PS3 will run a bit faster now. Just got back from Time Warner's Brooklyn distro center. Now looking into the HVR-950 USB HDTV Tuner for any television I might need in the future.

Using hard-and-fast rules about something that is largely if not entirely personal preference is incredibly stupid. Disclosure: I have the center of my screen at 64" off the ground, but it's a 120" diagonal screen. That puts the bottom of the screen at 29" off the floor. Having an itty bitty TV all the way up there is dumb.

I think my current set up is a mess, as I'm in rented accomodation, but I'm buying a place of my own in October, so I can get some proper furniture, integrate my set up into maybe a fake wall, hide all the loving wires. ;/ Click pics for big.   I'm looking to get an entry level sony receiver when I've saved up enough, I think it's the Sony STR-DG520, £150. Get myself a good 5.1 system and install them correctly around the wall.

I think this is the second or third time I've posted in this thread, but now it is time for an update!   I've since moved out of my parents house and into an apartment. I'm running XBMC with the latest MediaStream skin on a chipped Xbox which is linked to a 300 GB server in my bedroom with all the media on it. The speakers are some badass old Technic's from when I was about four years old, but they sound so awesome that I don't really need a center channel at this point. I've got two lovely HTiB surrounds in the back that do the job okay for now. I'm thinking of getting a couple of studio monitors for my bedroom, as the stereo I bought has support for another zone. Parts: 37" Vizio 720p LCD Onkyo TX-SR506 (loving AWESOME for the price, which was like $300 new) Technics vinyl player (no amp for it yet  )Modified Xbox running XBMC Stock PS2 that barely does widescreen I just have to get over the fact that I'm stuck with loving beige for a wall color.

The only thing that kills me is my speakers aren't designed to be Bi-Amped and I would like a bit more sound out of my fronts. But it does a grate job with my current setup.

 I finally got a bedroom tv! I know its nothing fancy, but it does the trick for movies and surfing the web. I plan to conceal the cables in the wall sometime in the future and possibly pick up a DiNovo mini bluetooth keyboard to control the laptop.

They didn't give me more than one tracking number and normally they alert you and give you more than one invoice. I mean, it is possible they did a second box and it was a mistake. This won't stop me from buying from them again. I have just been excited to try out the matrixing switch, and it is like being a kid on christmas opening a gift and having the toy be broken. An affordable hdmi matrix switch that actually works is like the holy AV grail, and supposedly this latest version does the trick.

i have like 5 broken cables from monoprice. 2 of those are barely used component cables that i used from my onkyo to my LPA-1 power amp, i dont know if its my onkyo having loose connections, or the cable being lovely though.

I have a few quick setup questions about my setup before I get everything "finalized" Here is a picture for REFERENCE:  Yes the picture is terrible and off-center, everything is ugly and wires are everywhere, but I'm waiting on a huge monoprice order and a sub to arrive tomorrow before I toss a rug down and get everything loomed properly over the long week. Note the cable loom in the foreground. Is it "okay" to have those speakers that close together (~50")? Due to the room layout, everything needs to be that "smooshed" together in order to make the middle of the couch line up with the middle of the TV. I think I'm at the maximum viewing distance that all the nerds suggest, but if I moved the TV up any closer the stand would be blocking the archway into the study. I have a Hsu STF-2 that will be here tomorrow to replace my 8 year old Definitive Pro80, and I was hoping to stick it behind the TV stand against the wall. Is this a stupid idea? If I ditch of one of my end tables next to the couch I would be able to space everything out about 20" or so. Would this be be beneficial at all? How close is "too close" for surround speakers? Right now they are at ear level about 1' directly on either side of the couch. TenementFunster, I think your speaker placement is fine, although a little wider spacing may help to create a larger more pleasing soundstage. And how were you going to fit the STF-2 behind your TV? It's pretty large. I'd suggest front corner placement if at all possible. Also, your surrounds should be at standing ear height, not sitting, or else they'll likely be too directional and overpowering. Here's my college house setup again. We moved a couple things around because the 360's vertical orientation was causing disc read issues. The coffee table also looks a little more normal. And before you complain, I have dusted since taking these pictures.    edit: Another thing is I just, by ear, "recalibrated" the sub (VTF-2 Mk3) with some test tones and sweeps. Besides upping the volume ever so slightly, I lowered the crossover and switched the sub's phase from 0 to 180 degrees. If you haven't messed with the phase of your subwoofer, I would definitely recommend doing so because it improved the response SO much. There was a very noticeable null near the crossover point, where the speakers take over. Inverting the phase has mostly eliminated the problem and the low end has much more visceral force now. I can pretty easily simulate a decent earthquake in our house now. edit2: For reference TenementFunster, my speakers are 64" from the center of each driver apart. That is a pretty misleadingly-named rule of thumb, but up they go. I have a buddy that is quite knowledgeable about stereo stuff so I'll have him check out the calibration stuff for me with the sub. Sorry for lovely cellphone pictures. I just set this all up and I'm not entirely happy with it quite yet, mainly I need a 5.1 speaker setup and maybe a PS3 so I can watch Blu-Rays. Click here for the full 1600x1200 image. The bins and crap are left over from movign stuff around, they'll be all gone in a few days and I'm gonna put some bookshelves in. Here's a list of components though. -LG 32" HDTV (forget exact model, it's a 2007 model though) -HD Cable Box -Ancient (1988) receiver for my equally ancient speakers -Wii -Xbox 360 The tv stand is from Ikea and the drawer under it holds controllers, cables and other things like that. I'll post an update when I get a better camera, I'll also post my bedroom setup once it's finished.

Check this shizzle: the FedEx guy woke me up today at no poo poo 7:45am and dropped my STF-2 off. It rocks. So after I back this evening the UPS guy finally made it by at 6:30pm to drop off my monoprice order. Four hours and like $80 at monoprice turned this: Into this:  Look at how studly I am:  yes I bi-amped the speakers whatever back off Now all I need to do is change out the rhino lining in the vans and I'll bet totally loving professional up in this piece

whats to the left of the tv? i had my VTF2 MKIII about 6" away from the wall and then i got LS6s so i had to smash it right up against the wall, and now it sounds like poo poo i think... The bass just shakes the room a LOT, when before it was clean bass that you could actually hear and fell, not just hear shaking the walls like hell.
