They even have a game plan for doing burnouts so the cops wouldn't get them. Also the LEDs on the tires were pretty terrible too. I don't know why these kids just don't go out to their local track. The drag strip around here is like 30 bucks for street legal night. Sure beats a impounded car. Spooky. fucked around with this message at 04:14 on Sep 29, 2008 |

Not to mention that the pull basically proved nothing other than who has more traction, which on factory tires basically comes down to which truck is heavier. Toss enough weight in the bed that the tires won't spin and try it again. I still think the Chevy will win (SBC's pushrod torque versus the SOHC modular in the Ford), but this "test" proved exactly nothing.

From what I've seen the Ford mod motors make more torque down low than similar displacement SBCs. The SBC might still have a broader powerband though.

deviant. posted:From what I've seen the Ford mod motors make more torque down low than similar displacement SBCs. The SBC might still have a broader powerband though. I haven't driven the 3 valve, but for a time I daily drove my parents' 2001 F-150 with the 2 valve 5.4L and I owned both a 1993 Crown Vic and a 1995 Thunderbird which share the 2 valve 4.6L. None of them really had anything off the line. The 5.4 obviously had a bit more punch due to the increased stroke, but that was balanced out by the lovely airflow in the 2 valve heads choking it towards the top end. Previous to the F-150 we had a '98 5.4L Expedition which felt about the same from the passenger seat. The SBCs have always been torque monsters when I've driven them (compared to their Modular competition), even down to the Vortec 4800 powered Silverado I used to haul a car through the mountains of PA. It handled the PA Turnpike better than the 460 powered RV we used to have. I'm a Ford guy but I really wish they'd reserve the mod for cars and give the trucks something with a better low end. edit: hell with it, here's some numbers for the current or most recent models 2V 4.6 (2007 F-150) - 248HP, 294 lb-ft 3V 4.6 (2009 F-150) - 292HP, 320 lb-ft 2V 5.4 (2004 F-150) - 260HP, 350 lb-ft 3V 5.4 (2008 F-150) - 300HP, 365 lb-ft 3V 5.4 (2009 F-150) - 320HP, 390 lb-ft 2V 6.8 (2004 F-250) - 310HP, 425 lb-ft 3V 6.8 (2009 F-250) - 362HP, 467 lb-ft G3 4.8 (2007 C1500) - 295HP, 305 lb-ft G4 4.8 (2009 C1500) - 295HP, 305 lb-ft G3 5.3 (2007 C1500) - 295HP, 335 lb-ft G4 5.3 (2009 C1500) - 320HP, 340 lb-ft G3 6.0 (2007 C2500) - 325HP, 370 lb-ft G3 6.0 (2007 C2500) - 345HP, 380 lb-ft (H.O. "VortecMAX" package) G4 6.0 (2009 C1500) - 367HP, 375 lb-ft G7 8.1 (2007 C2500) - 340HP, 455 lb-ft (big block, only included for completeness) I don't have RPM information for these numbers, but as an overall rule pushrod motors tend to make more power at the bottom end. The 3 valve engines seem to have allowed Ford to catch up in the numbers game with its displacement competition from GM's bin, but without seeing some curves or at least a peak torque RPM point I'm still going to assume that the simpler motor will have that power on tap lower. wolrah fucked around with this message at 05:53 on Oct 3, 2008 |

He did look like he had a pretty good pace going, especially considering conditions. In the lower classes, are co-drivers just there to provide mechanical assistance and stage-to-stage directions, since they aren't allowed pace notes?
