My guess is you have to be completely unaffected by it to get everything out of the machine, and the everyday driver would be anything but.

It kind of looks like there's a minor up-slope in the road, which would affect the cars a good bit. Maybe the tires and road surface are cold, too.

Ziploc posted:http://videos.streetfire.net/video/333-Fifth-Gear-062-Times_189566.htm Manufacturer 0-60 times are done on a dyno with a calculation that's supposed to account for drag. No G force, no drag from the front wheels, no extra weight from fuel or driver, etc. It is by no means a real world time, just as their horsepower numbers are always significantly higher than what the car is actually putting to the ground.

kimbo305 posted:wouldn't it be just as cheap to send out a ringer car and a test driver to go try to get the best 0-60 time possible? And fudge that if they don't like it? No, because the systems are already in place. Also, if everybody is already using this method, why would anyone want to run "real world times" and publish higher figures?

In my physics class a few weeks back we were talking about acceleration due to gravity, and worked out that in some cars (I forget the exact calculations and times) as fast as the Ariel Atom and a few others, you're effectively experiencing freefall but with even more force. I immediately start to think about those dropzone type rides at theme parks (Since I've never skydived) and how the sensation makes all your muscles tense up and how violent it all is. Yeah, living vicariously through science class.

I watched an interview with an NHRA Top Fuel driver last weekend where they asked him a viewer's question that had been emailed in to the show. The question was, "Why are you guys always out of breath at the end of a sub 5 second pass?" His answer, "Your entire body contracts when you leave the starting line and it is impossible to breathe until a few seconds after the pass is over because of the adrenaline overload." Now, I don't know how much I'd trust the medical opinions of a race car driver, but I can only imagine the insane rush it is to go from 0 to 300+ in less than 5 seconds. I know that when I make a pass in my car I'm pretty amped up by the end of it and I'm usually pretty drained the next day after racing.

On most modern cars, at least GM cars, power ratings are SAE certified based on tests with detailed conditions and procedures. It's not like the 1960s anymore where power ratings were often inflated. Nobody rates power at the drive wheels though; its always done as flywheel. But there's nothing wrong with that, IMHO.

Ideally, fade out the first song into just engine noise.

How fast is the car you're driving and how many passes do you make in a day? That Targa video was really good. Looks like there were quite a few great cars there this year. Loving the Sprongls' Quattro, but I may be biased as their shop is in my home town. I was bummed that the route last year involved no jumps. We skipped the classic bridge jump in Brigus even. Good to see that Ralph Gilles still can't keep a car on the road. The interview in the video has the other driver saying he was on a flying lap and that the flags were only visible 100m in front of the accident, and if that's true, it's conceivable that there really wasn't enough time to react or avoid. Every situation I've seen has flaggers two corners before the accident displaying a yellow, either standing or waved.
