Interesting, I didn't quite think of that. The intake boot seems to be solid without any problems, but I haven't checked anywhere else for cracks in the intake area. Smart idea with the smoke machine too; I think I know of someone that could be of some use.

My problem is that I want to get this car fixed up. Every two years I run into this problem of it barely passing or failing CA smog. So instead of focusing on getting the drat thing fixed, I just work on it to make due with passing smog. Now that I'm finally out of college and about to get a decent paying job, I want to fix it for good. I'm already on the look out for the right DME (which is trickier than I thought), and this week I'll see about checking out smoke machines and see if I can experiment with looking for cracks. Thanks for the advice.

I have a 2002 530 w/ 96k miles on it. It has been very well cared for, but the 100k wear items are starting to worry me. Took it into the shop for an oil change, and I asked them to look at the cooling system to see if it was getting ready to explode on me. The response was that they couldn't tell, but I should just replace it. Anyhow, does $1700 sound right for a full cooling system replacement on an e39 530?

[And no, I can't do the work myself. No facilities, no tools.]

UUC is having a closeout on the Pipercross intake for the E36 or E46, $99 for the Silver finish, $120 for the Carbon Fiber. The original prices were something like $360/420.

I just picked one up for my E36, I'd much rather go with UUC for $99 than Cosmos for $140+.

Parts cost will be about $500-600. So you could spend $1100 on tools and end up with a kickass toolset and be able to do just about any other maintenance, or give that money to the dealer. :) $1700 is about what my buddy was charged at a BMW dealer to replace all the cooling system parts. Make sure they do ALL of them. Waterpump, thermostat, thermostat housing, upper and lower hoses, radiator, expansion tank, fan clutch, tensioner pulley, and the serpentine belt.

^^^^Touche. Of course, that doesn't solve the problem of having no place to store said tools or work on the vehicle. Got $100k or so for a deeded garage spot in DC?

Sounded like everything, though I'll probably hold off until next month to pull the trigger since I don't need to go anywhere too far until November 15.

PS: not a dealer, but rather a high-end independent. I suspect the dealer price in DC would be much higher.

UPDATE: Yeah, I probably need to invest in a garage. Oil change, new tranny programming, brakes, brake fluid flush & cooling system come out to a cool $2700. Or more than my mortgage.

So in addition to the UUC Intake I went ahead and picked up some UUC underdrive pulleys on eBay using the 30% cash back thing that MS has going on. $200-$60 cash back + $13 shipping = awesome.

Now to buy an X-Brace using the same method...

I bought a 2005 pre-owned 330xi with ~47k miles on it about a week and a half ago. It's a fantastic machine,and I have been enjoying it quite a bit.

However, I have one question that I hope you guys might be able to field before I call the dearlership. Every time I park the car, turn off the engine, and get out, after ~5-10 seconds there is a single quite audible mechanical creak noise that originates somewhere under the driver's side rear of the chassis perhaps near the tailpipes. Does this sound like something to be overly concerned with?

Nothing I've heard of before. Probably just something expanding or compressing due to the extreme heats of an exhaust system?

Dealership is called stealership for a reason. They will charge you for labour even if they do nothing to the car. Keep that in mind.

Go read threads where people take the car in for an alignment, then the dealer says X and Y and Z are broken (even if the car was just checked out by your mechanic and it's all fine) and then doesn't do the alignment and charges you $155 for labour anyways.

Because I'm not being a moron and making personal attacks on the internet.

Most of the people here bought used cars because they don't exactly have the money to pay for a new BMW (rip off anyways) or their ridiculous fees. If you can't work on your own car it's best to take it to a small garage that specializes in BMW/DTM cars. The dealership is crooked as hell and even though a small garage can be too the trick is to find some 50 year old guy that just loves BMWs and works on them all day.

That said, there is no substitute for working on your own car if you are capable and knowledgeable. It's also the cheapest option by far and you know exactly what happens in every step of the process. No worrying about what the tech hosed up.

All dealership are crooked as hell? I bought my car with a CPO warranty, and the first time I had to utilize the warranty (taillight harness shorted itself out) I walked with my car back to the bay and talked to the tech the first 20 minutes he was working. He alerted me to most of the same things that dear ol' AI has, and included some tips on how to get around some of the price hikes at the parts desk. The service writer was also pretty easygoing and I've called back and talked to him about some minor things on my car - in fact, he's the one who told me how to reprogram my key.

Having said that, I've only ever taken my car to the dealership that once. Obviously those of us who can do the work ourselves prefer the save the money. I can build a computer for $500 or you can buy the some one from Dell for $800 - that doesn't make Dell a bad company. For that $800 you get parts purchased in bulk and tested again before they're used, and you get a warranty and support center.

Having work done at the dealership is similar - you get your coolant system replaced by the dealership and something goes wrong in short future, you have the dealership to fall back on. You do it yourself, you have yourself to fall back on. "Car people" love to bash and berate dealerships universally, but they serve their purpose. Crooked people exist...everywhere.


As for new BMWs being a rip-off, keep spouting that. Stop buying used ones though, since you're just perpetuating the cycle. Let's take a guess at who's butthurt.

When the dealer fucks something up it they certainly should fix the problem on their own dime but when I do things myself I know that they're done perfectly so there is no "falling back" on anything. The point I was making is that a small-time, reliable BMW/DTM specialist will be cheaper and be a lot nicer to you than a BMW dealership because you don't have to prove you have money to get treated well.

I can elaborate on this a lot more if you want, but the fact is that almost every BMW dealership I've been to has treated me or my friends like poo poo unless they had reason to believe we had money (depending on what car we showed up in, etc).

A new car of ANY make is a rip-off. I'm not "butthurt" but I'd like it if you idiots stopped misinterpeting what I write. Also my views are commonly shared by the average "enthusiast" because usually we don't have a lot of money and purchase second-hand cars and are more oft to do some or all of our own work. Yesterday, I bought some M3 cams out of a busted engine (guy disintegrated the #5 piston in his E36 M3 at Road Atlanta) and some 30# injectors to go with em. The injectors are probably a bit much without doing FI, so now I'm strongly considering some sort of blower for the engine (M52B28 from a '97 528, going into an E30). Cams are in great shape, and I got a good deal on the whole package, including cam ledges. I'll post photos in here once I start in on the head of the engine.

I have seen new parts fail. A DIYer has nothing to go on when that happens and is SOL. Someone who goes to the dealer will just get it fixed for free under parts warranty.

Of course, this doesn't apply to anything bought aftermarket that has a warranty.

9006 and 9005 for high/low I believe. Fogs probably H4? H3? Any parts manual will show you.

I got the UUC Underdrive Pulleys installed last night but didn't get to try them out. I got on my car once this morning, 2nd gear 40-60mph to pass a slow moving car and wow, it just rips over 4500rpm. I wouldn't say it's an earth shattering gain or anything, but it is definitely not placebo.

The revs dropping faster on the 1-2 shift really helps too.

Are they worth $200? Eh, if you have done a few other NA mods and want some more pull up top, maybe. I'm happy with them but I only "paid" $160 shipped for them. Yay MS 30% cash back on eBay.

Install only took 30 minutes, hardest part was putting the belts back on. If you still have the mech. fan it will take a bit longer.

We just brought home another BMW to add to our stable. My youngest brother and mom will share the car once he gets his license. We spotted a 318ti parked behind the shop when we dropped the VW TDI off to have the timing belt swapped. Asked the owner about it and he gave us the guys number. Turns out it had a plugged cat and he didn't feel like getting it fixed so he was just storing it there. We brought it home for $900, its a 1997 black on black but sadly an automatic. It needs a new cat/glasspack and the brakes need some attention as well as a good cleaning.

With the addition of this one our fleet is: 2004 R1150RT, 1998 M3, 1997 318ti, 1988 325is (track car) and a 1987 325.

I hate to do this but I'm just so happy to finally join the BMW crew that I had to post over here too. Snagged this beaut near the end of Sept. and have not regretted it for a single mile. It's a 2000 and you could never guess it by the condition it's in. The damned Taxi Cab paint scheme left me no choice but to finally see what you crazy bavarian lovers keep raving about.




I finally understand what the hype is about. Now I just need to get my hands on one of the 4 wheeled models.

Cause of cooling failure? Turns out a water pump I was positive had been replaced with a new one was still rocking the original plastic impeller. Or, you know, a shaft surrounded by the little pieces of what used to be an impeller. Is this not on the dealer service list? I had the guy I purchased it froms complete list of maintenance records, including an Inspection II at 100k, and the clutch work and (obviously installed) suspension work.

Thankfully my oil and coolant both seemed clean when I drained them, so far no signs of any head gasket problems, though I've heard it can take a few hundred miles for them to manifest. Flushed everything out, and replaced the water pump, thermostat, and upper and lower hoses, just waiting for a new radiator to drop in and hope for the best.

Water pumps are rarely replaced as a preventative thing. Also though, most of the recent OEM water pumps use composite impellers. The metal impeller pumps seemed to fail with pretty good regularity as well.

I've just picked up my second Mini - trading a 2005 Mini One for a 2008 Cooper S. No giant wheels, or stripes and very few extras as I bought it for the engine.

What a fantastic car. Obviously much faster than my old one, but with a better ride (despite the firmer suspension & runflats) and a much more 'BMW' feel to it. I'm totally head over heels in love with it and have stuck just over 1000 miles on it in the three weeks that I've had it. This may not seem like much, but my monthly mileage is usually around 400 miles.

My subframe reinforcement plates came in the other day, and today I started tearing apart the suspension. I had a crack in the unibody welded up last year, but didn't put in the plates cause I'm stupid. So now I get to pay the stupid tax in the form of untold hours of suffering. I got the driver side trailing arm off today. Tomorrow hopefully I can get the diff, the other trailing arm, and the control arms. Hopefully I can get the subframe out by tomorrow night.

I should have known there was a catch to a $1700 bimmer.

I think I'm going to sell my E28 and nab an E30, as it seems more inline with my wants. I don't need the extra two doors and space of the E28, and I really miss the glove-like fit of my S2k and MR2. The performance advantage is nice too.


I had a ride along in a 2.7 eta / i hybrid E30 :) That thing hugged the corners better than drat near any car I've been in. My friend has an S2000 with Zeal coilovers among other mods, and seemed faster, but the E30 just felt so confident. I felt like we were on a sunday drive, but we were taking hairpin corners at breakneck speeds - in the middle of the night on a pitch black road at that! I've never felt that comfortable during something like that. I'm going to lose some money selling the E28, but I've made a profit on my previous three cars so I can't get upset.

Got word from my parents earlier today that they put a deposit or placed an order (Not sure) on a 335d for when they arrive stateside. I believe its based of the N54 (correct me if I'm wrong)so it should be a reliable motor right? Just hoping some of you might know more about it like real world economy and how it compares to the 335i.

Knowing my parents they would want a bit more power, would getting a reflash kill the economy or leave it as is? Kinda new to the whole diesel world so any tips or info would be awesome.
