And the 'Black Metal is DEAD!1!!!1' thing is so old.

And that 'once a band has more than 50 people liking them and they start selling CDs they have Sold Out and are not true Black Metal anymore' is another thing that is real boring and old too.

But then again - I like Symphonic Norwegian Black Metal, which isn't 'Kvlt' or 'Tru' Black Metal enough, or so I have been told by those who like to think of themselves as the elite.

I certainly don't mean that Black Metal is dead, but the phrase "true norwegian" black metal is redundant and worthless. Almost all BM coming out from Norway these days are boring crap. Yes there are great releases, but they don't play traditional "true" black metal.

Eld was incredible. It's one of very, very few albums that I'm familiar with that successfully lays the Viking vocal style over more traditional black metal riffing and song structures.

In the back it has some of the whole Euronymous/Varg Vikernes thing (letters, magazine articles, newletters etc) and a few quotes in stuff throughout the book and a foldout timeline of Black Metal but it is mainly a photo book. I would totally recommend it though. That and 'Lords of Chaos'.

Anyone else with any book recommendations? Has anyone seen any documentaries that are worth watching? (Amazon is always suggesting DVDs but I don't want to purchase any if they suck).

Newer gorgoroth is arguably better than their old poo poo. Ad Majorem is hands down my favorite album of theirs. I can't wait to see what the new band starts putting out.

Ad Majorum is the only album of theirs I've listened to thus far (I've only recently started listening to black metal.)

Question:

What are some criteria that one might use to judge whether a black metal album is good or bad?

It varies a lot from one band to the next. In the case of Gorgoroth, they have a neoclassical thing going on, it's mostly expressive. Listening to a Gorgoroth album, to me, is an emotional journey, and I rate it on how it moves me. The newer albums have great atmosphere, and they never sacrifice the mood/story/concept/whatever to just insert riffs for the sake of being catchy, which they did on some of their earlier stuff.

Edit: in the case of say, Old Man's Child, the entire idea of the music is just to be catchy, so I'd rate it like that. With something like early Satyricon, I'd rate it on both these scales at once.

1. Are they from a penniless former Soviet satellite?
2. Do one or more of the band members have ties to National Socialist groups?
