Hey folks. Sorry I haven't put up many etchings lately - I've been having a bit of a problem with my process, and I haven't been happy with the results. As such, I didn't want to list anything. Here's what they're looking like: As you can see, they're turning out very faint, and losing the finer detail. I've managed to figure out why, and future etchings will now proceed with a fixed process! 1200 DPI is too fine for the etch, so it's losing some of the detail. Now, if anyone wants these ones - it's 2 Optimus Trains and a Shockwave - I'll clearcoat them, and let them go for $10 each +3 shipping. I don't feel right about listing them as they weren't up to my standards. (or should I mention this in the GBS thread?)

I'd say go ahead and mention it on both the GBS thread and the SA Mart thread. Namely the SA Mart one has a banner ad directed to it, and the GBS thread will catch those who have ads turned off.

Wooohooo! Got my first "total stranger just browsing" sale today - absolutely no connection with either here, Facebook or any of the other forums I go on. And they bought $50's worth of stuff! A very happy dance indeed over here. How is everyone else finding things atm with the whole credit crunch thingie? Bizarrely Etsy is doing grand for me (relatively speaking) but the other business I run is really dragging...seems everyone is thinking short-term gifts rather than fun things to do with their kids in the new year...ho hum.

I'm not a seller or anything, but I had a question for you guys- how quickly do you normally respond to sales? I bought some stuff for Christmas presents on Thursday (granted, it was Thanksgiving), and only one of the three sellers has gotten back to me so far. How long should I give it before I get worried/contact someone (since the payments have gone through already)?

Some ship right away, others make items as they're ordered. Sometimes a seller will ship without emailing anything even. Your best bet is to check your purchase history on Etsy to see if they've been marked as 'shipped.' After that, I'd go ahead and send a friendly convo to the seller(s) like, "Hi there, I'd just like to make sure that my payment for ______ order was received ok, and if you had an idea on when it might be shipped out " Here's hoping the sellers were simply swamped and already have your order in the post!

I bought a clock from a seller on etsy- I paid, everything went smoothly, but it's been a while and I haven't received my package. When I went to her shop to send her a message, everything had been cleared out (I'm the one and only sale) and she won't respond to my messages. How long should I wait until I leave negative feedback and report it to etsy? Also, what are the chances of me getting my money back from PayPal? It was only $25 total, so I wasn't horribly scammed. Luckily, this has never happened before, so I'm not familiar with what I should do exactly.

How long has it been? Does the seller have a note in their announcements about being closed? According to PayPal, you have 45 days to file a dispute. If you're close, you may want to file the dispute so that you don't lose the opportunity for recourse. If the account has money, you may get it back. If it's closed or empty, you get nothing as far as I know. If you have a bit of time, you could convo the seller and mention to them that you plan to file a complaint with Etsy and PayPal if you do not hear back by X date. Unfortunately if they are trying to scam that simply gives them a heads up to clear out their PayPal. Hopefully, the seller will come through with the clock.

Unfortunately at this point since there has been no response, and obviously no intention by the seller to get you your clock, the best thing to do would be to leave negative feedback and cancel the sale. You'd still need to contact Paypal to actually get your money though, the most Etsy could do is close the other person's account (no idea if they would or not). If it's within the allotted 45 days also contact Paypal to get your money back. It royally sucks that you've been put in this situation, but it's pretty inexcusable for the seller to be so unprofessional and neglectful.

Nrapture had a good idea with this, "convo the seller and mention to them that you plan to file a complaint with Etsy and PayPal if you do not hear back by X date." I've never had to leave negative feedback before either, and I totally understand not wanting to. Honestly it comes from the idea that you've genuinely had a bad experience with this seller, and who knots, it might help other buyers in the future if the seller ends up listing more clocks. scumble - I'm glad to hear those all turned out ok!

So I totally feel like this is the only place I can vent about the people being so upset about the whole "search change" with out being told how dumb and stupid I am. fyi: Etsy changed a thing, where when you get search results, it goes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 < > instead of 1, 2, 3, . . . 56, 57, 58. It still says how many results are found, but people are all upset because OMG what if your item is on page 6 (though if your browsing on page 2, the counter looks like this 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 < > ) so people are all upset, because they feel Etsy did this on purpose to get people to renew their items more often. People are talking about leaving Etsy, or boycotting renewals because of it, and I try to explain to people that you know, page 6 is still there, and not many people search an item and go straight to the last page anyway. Most people when they search they browse through the first 10 or so pages, and they can still do that via the arrows. Which is infact how I've always searched anyway, was by the arrows, hell I don't even know how many pages I've ever searched through, I just look till I find something. The idea is that they have to pay more to renew more often so they are not buried as quickly, but the thing is, that they are buried just as quickly if Etsy showed 5 pages, or 10 pages, or 20 pages. The best part is, is that everyone says they are leaving Etsy to go to this place called Artfire, where you get unlimited listings for $7 a month. And I try explaining to them how "buried listings" would be even worse over their because you know your going to get a person who does nothing but renews their item every 5 minutes and instead of competing against a select few people who pay renew items all the time, your now competing against everyone who has the ability to renew items. I suppose the part that really pisses people off the most is when I tell them that if their items are not selling on Etsy, chances are they wont sell anywhere else either.

Artfire has search based on most recent renewals like Etsy? lol, goddamn that's a good thing to know. I've been pondering another site to diversify on later next year, and thankfully hadn't totally bought into Artfire. It's best to give up giving rational explanations to the majority of folks over there when the mob mentality hits. It's like a rage against the machine sort of thing, where if you try to point to anything contrary, you're either ignored or lashed at. Sometimes you won't ever win, but you can at least grab some pop corn and watch

Interesting stuff...friend of mine launched on Etsy a week after me and then Artfire last week. I'm too busy with Etsy to even look into it at the moment but it seemed like a real clone at first glance. I always figured the deal with any site like this is more about making your tags relevant for searches and actively promoting your wares around the site and elsewhere rather than passive stuff like listing. The second I list something it's buried anyway! All my sales bar three have come through work I've done outside of Etsy. Seems to me like all the eBay clones that popped up and then disappeared, people trying to make a quick buck without bothering to build something that works and has a community. Don't suppose anyone's looked into European and UK sites yet? In the New Year I'm planning to have a good nosy at Folksy, Coriandr and Dawanda. I don't know if it'll be worth my while, an initial glance suggests listing fees and % take of sales are higher, even factoring in the $ exchange rate. Coriandr might be worth hitting up as there's bugger all listed there atm so lots more exposure.

Seems to me like all the eBay clones that popped up and then disappeared, people trying to make a quick buck without bothering to build something that works and has a community. I think ultimatly alot of these clones will fail. They all promise to be better than Etsy, mostly they are catering to the people who don't have sales on Etsy, and claim they will get sales on their site. Obviously you can see how that theory really doesn't work. Granted I've not looked to much into these other places, because I'm actually happy with how Etsy is working out for me. Long term eventually I plan to just run my own website for the things I sell, but since I have no time for that, Etsy is perfect. I think alot of people tend to think that just because they made an item and listed it on Etsy means that all they have to do is sit back and watch the profit roll in. When it doesnt sell, its "OMG ETSY SUCKS" which really isn't Etsy's fault. Lot's of times if your item wont sell on Etsy, it won't sell elsewhere either. I think most people don't understand also that Etsy is just simply a venue, you are responsible for advertising/promoting your own products. It's almost akin to someone saying "Oh I'm going to go walk down Hollywood Boulvard, let me make sure I look my best in case I get discovered", which we all know never happens. Sure the Boulvard is there for you to walk down, but walking down it doesn't mean your going to win an Oscar.

Kind of a stupid question, but if I frame a drawing of mine (like, professionally), is it okay to sell it with Etsy, or does everything have to be 100% handmade?

Cheers, that's good to know. Maybe I'll open up a little shop when I resolve my issues with PayPal (an unlikely scenario, but whatever) Interesting to note that selling following types items is prohibited: * Alcohol * Tobacco * Drugs * Pornography * Firearms and/or weapons * Recalled items * Real estate * Motor vehicles (automobiles, motorcycles, boats, etc.) Real estates?

Over winter break I've got a number of projects lined up, and I'm thinking of doing another circular cabled scarf. Basically another one of these: Click here for the full 430x719 image. View listing The one I made before was only 38" long, and the next one I want to make closer to 48-54" long. What I don't know is if the longer length is preferable, or what other colors people would be interested in. Red, Black, Grey, Blue, Yellow, Stripes, Other? Any input would be great

What a lovely pattern! I might be a fashion freak, but I think I would love this in grey or a strong (but not hot) pink. I actually think this would also look amazing in a black that had a little silver sparkle in it. Because it's not flat something with a silver thread would be really sparkly. Nice item, best of luck with that in the winter season.

I think the cables are interesting enough that stripes might make it a little too busy.

Well the holidays are over. I bought a lot of gifts on Etsy this year and each experience was awesome and everything was well received. I think I'll start my shopping for next year a little earlier this time as there are quite a few higher priced items I really liked and would have been willing to buy except for the old money crunch problem. I'm doing a revamp of my craft room and after that I'll be getting back to business and completely restocking my Etsy shelves. I need to get better at having an Etsy inventory as well as a craft fair inventory, as craft fairs for me this year were awesome. I actually bought a new washer and dryer with the money I made at fairs. I found Etsy sales were best if I had an inventory of about 30 items at a time, but each time I did a fair I took down my entire inventory. I want to avoid that. Because Canada Post rates will be going up once again I'm going to have to step back from bigger items and create only items that can be shipped flat in a padded envelope for Etsy. Stupid Canada Post... I also want to try my hand at a new line for me which I'm excited about. That probably won't happen until closer to spring though. We'll see how that goes. I plan on adding it to my existing shop. Anyone else with big plans for the coming year?
