Maybe he's suggesting rugs under the plastic mats to make it look nicer than a bare wooden floor.

What's wrong with bare wooden floors? Lots of people spend a lot of money to get nice hardwood floors. Why cover them up with a rug?

Yeah I also don't understand this. I spent a lot of money having the original hardwood floors in house refinished and have no interest in covering it up or damaging it in this room where we have two chairs which roll around all day by leaving it bare. I will at some point just buy a huge piece of that clear plastic crap though and cut it to fit the room so it's not all mismatched like now.

I don't know what the brown one is, it's a hand-me-down. The black ones I think are VIKA (I have a third one which I was planning on putting on the far wall but never got around to it). They are very very cheap and you match the legs and tabletop.. I think they were $35/piece.

I have that same desk and I absolutely love it. The wood is pretty strong considering it's ikea brand too. I just moved to a new house (good 50km drive) a few days ago and there isn't a single chip in it anywhere.

Sadly, I don't know the name of it. I wouldn't mind knowing though in case I ever have to replace it.

Only thing that annoys me, apart going back from a NEK 4000 to a "rectangular" keyboard, is the loving retarded placement of the Insert key.

Do you have free/unlimited 3g bandwidth? And if not, won't that cost you a fortune?

Over here we have 'mobile broadband', basically a small thumb-drive sized device that you plug into a USB port. It functions purely as a 3G modem, and you can't use the SIM to make/receive calls (I think). Unlimited bandwidth, but rather pointless since every major mall here has free wifi already. Might be the same where he lives.

As long as you use a program that doesn't show its passthroughing the connection to a computer, and don't use an extraordinary amount of bandwidth (which is actually quite a bit, if you consider a lot of phones are loading youtube et al, as long as you aren't torrenting linux isos you're pretty much good).

It's a prepaid kind of thing, like you can get with mobile phones. You pay x dollars and get y quota that will expire in z days (in my case I bought 12gig and it's good for a year). Ordinarily I use it for the netbook but it's handy whilst I am awaiting the installation of ADSL.

I've used about 1.2GB of my quota thus far, and the vast majority of it has been me installing Ubuntu 8.10 on the netbook :).

Anything similar to this in Canada, assuming you live in the States like the majority of posters do? I'm getting a netbook soon and knowing that I can carry around a pre-paid usb stick that'll give me internet anywhere sounds amazing.

I'm a little further south from Canada, I'm in Australia. I'm sure there'll be some Telco up there that provides such a service though!

Rogers offers a USB stick and 3.5G speed. Not sure on pricing or how well it works, but it does exsist. rogers.com/rocket

e: the USB stick is free w/ 1 year contract and minimum $25/month bill. Otherwise the USB stick is $129
