Arcturus
Equilibrium (really digging Sagas)
Nokturnal Mortum

Any recommendations appreciated.

I just found the band Carach Angren. Some serious kickass symphonic black metal. Check out their MySpace. You'd probably like it.

I haven't heard it yet but I Krig left me wanting more. I'd be curious to hear how you rate it after you've heard their other two. Pitch Black Brigade is pretty good, I hope they went back in that direction again.

I'll definitely get them both and give a listen. Milorg is so good that after my first play-through I immediately started it up again.

I haven't read the thread entirely and I have some ideas of where to look already, so I am throwing this question out there for myself and anyone with similar taste. Very specifically, what should I listen to that is very much like Emperor or Leviathan? Those are really the only two black metal artists I am very into right now.

I'd go with tried and true classics like Burzum, Dimmu Borgir and older Satyricon.

There's shitloads of stuff like Emperor, but really, it depends on what era of their output you mean. I'd recommend Avzhia (sometimes spelled Auzhia)'s The Key of Throne and Dark Emperors if you like Emperor's output circa In the Nightside Eclipse.

I'd also suggest Setherial's Nord, which is a vastly underrated album for some reason, probably because people only remember what followed it.

As for Leviathan, why not look into Mutiilation, Vampires of Black Imperial Blood or Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul are the normal starting points there.

Hypocrisy is definitely death metal, but Peter's older and I think now defunct band The Abyss was black metal.

okay i am trying to track down a band:

there was a short lived thread or subtopic in a thread or something about beloved black metal vocalists, and someone linked a black metal band, french i think? That had absolutely inhuman and awesome shrieking. I recall looking at wikipedia at the time and it said they started out as a NSBM band and moved away from it later, and it may have been a one man project but I'm not sure. The album cover in the youtube track reminded me of black and white plague etchings.

edit: Found it. It was Peste Noire.

I went through all 25 pages yesterday: Thanks for the hundreds of recommendations! To contribute, two groups I really love haven't surfaced yet in this thread. People with traditional black-metal tastes might enjoy them.

Krieg Very fast with muddy production, no keyboards or acoustic instruments, anguished scratchy vocals, some guitar melody.

Has anyone heard news about either new Gorgoroth album? I know the name/rights trial is set for the last week of this month, but neither the Gaahl/King nor the Infernus websites are particularly helpful.

In other news, Kvitrafn's Wardruna comes out on the 19th!

I'm looking forward to the wardruna album. I've loved the samples on their myspace page. As for gorgoroth, the name bullshit is really getting pathetic at this point. Gaahl is more of a name than the band is anyway, let infernus keep driving it into the ground. Gaahl and king have been the creative force since Twilight anyway.

Is there any material to hear from either camp at this point?

Agreed. Hopefully the end of the month will be the end of this baby poo poo too. Wardruna sounds loving awesome, and I've also been digging the stand alone player on that site.

I checked the myspaces for both, and there isn't anything at either. Aside from their own sites, I don't know where else to look.

I've read the thread, haven't seen this one mentioned yet. Maybe it isn't black metal or maybe it just isn't very good - I'm crazy for it.

Band is "Zelfhaat" and the song I heard is "Beklagenswaardig Bestaan"

It starts out with a clip of the Jim Jones recording and goes from there. I'd heard the Jim Jones stuff before, introduced via an SA thread some years ago so when I heard it, it was spooky. How would you classify this music?

I liked what I heard of Zelfhaat, thanks for bringing this group into the discussion. I would definitely classify them as depressive black metal.

Listed influences on their MySpace page: "Depression, Nihilism, Suicide, Solitude, Abortion, Mental Defects, Euthanasia, Death, Disease, War, Famine, Apocaliptyc Visions, Negativity, Satan."

Nice, I'm glad I mentioned a band that sounds like what you like. Their influences are pretty funny, hehe. satan yeah!

Edit: If you like these guys, maybe you'd like Wedard. This band is drums and a guitar, very low production values. Oh and a droning echo-y keyboard sound. It sounds lame but I can't get the music out of my head. The band has a split with BlackStream (eh, not my taste) and a couple of albums, one of which is Einsamer Winterweg. Way slower than Zelfhatt, just kind of meanders around.

Krieg used to be awesome. Destruction Ritual is pure insanity. Total ear splitting goatnoise. Imperial is such a turd though, more so than most black metallers. I met him at a show and he called my friend a poser because he was wearing a blue polo shirt and refused to talk to him. "Black metal is about corpse paint, leather and spikes...not short hair and polo shirts.". Classic fat gently caress, moms basement, elite black metaller.

I've kind of fallen out with the majority of black metal...been into the old Canadian style stuff like Conqueror, Blasphemy, Revenge, Goatsemen and Naked Whipper (the last two arent canadian, but in a similar vein.

I'm really suprised Paysage d'Hiver hasn't been mentioned more. Wintherr makes some of the most amazing atmospheric black metal ever. Production levels jump around a lot from album to album (e.g you can barely hear Kerker, Einsamkeit is loud and clear), but so what. Just grab anything you can find.

(Pick up Darkspace material as well.)

Iskald is ABSOLUTELY worth checking out. I'm jealous you get to see them live.

If you're a fan of the windir/sworn Sogna black metal sound, Iskald is firmly in that realm. It's been a while since I've seen their myspace page, but if they have a song called Pesten up, that's the song that got me into them. I'm not the biggest fan of their new album but Shades of Misery and Northern Twilight are good.
