My old roommate bought a HD Nightster 2 years ago, I made fun of him at first. I've been checking out some of the customized ones, they're pretty neat. That's your stock Nightster. It's basically a 1200 Sportster Low with special paint scheme and such.

Right at the moment of impact, look how far out of line his front tire gets with the rear. Its amazing that he saved that.

It almost looks like the guy leans into it and grabs a bunch of throttle, like on a dirtbike. Awesome reaction.

Sitting at stop lights, I've pondered what would be required for me to monitor what's going on behind me with enough prescience to confidently accelerate into cross-traffic to avoid being rear-ended. I don't have it. My plan is always to sneak up beside the car in front of me if there is incoming trouble coming from behind. Of course this assumes a car is in front of me, and that I have the instinct necessary to determine someone isn't stopping in time to get out of the way.

blugu64 posted:It's kinda like this I had something similar happen to me making a left turn at a three way intersection. I saw them just in time to floor it and slide onto someones front lawn. The car running the light was close enough to t-boning me that it left a big streak of paint along the rear bumper. They made no attempt to stop. After it happened I calmly drove up the street to a nearby parking lot, parked the car, and started shaking uncontrollably like a hypothermia victim. 8ender fucked around with this message at 17:57 on Apr 15, 2009 |

I don't have it. You don't always need to head into cross traffic, just out of the way. If you've got 2 lanes, set yourself up so that you can squirt down the middle, if you're in the right hand lane, pull a right, if you're in the left hand lane, move up and straddle the DY or move into the right hand lane. It also helps if you try and keep a general awareness about which cars are around you, and that can determine if you need to really watch your rear view or not. It's just like anything else on a bike...think about what is going on and always have an out.
