Haha, FFD, you might've gotten hosed. Criterion is listing the SD DVD of Ran as out of print. It might be like those Rialto films that went out of print, and will come back in print in a few months, or it might be a few years.

I guess if you were curious about Ran, now is the time to rent it/buy it.

Yeah I definitely got boned this time. I didn't even get the eBay OOP bonus from it. Still, I'm not gonna snap up the SD version again. Ran has got to be a hugely important film to them, I think they'll work it out pretty soon.

Speaking of getting boned on eBay, I finally found someone selling a copy of Criterion's Kanal outside of the box set, but got outbid in the final seconds. loving snipers.

I have no feelings one way or the other about Cronos. Blade 2 was awful, but Pan's Labyrinth was okay.

Excellent month!

For All Mankind - I like it, should look amazing on Blu. Not sure if I'll buy it though.

The Human Condition - About loving time! An incredible, soul-crushing trilogy. I wish it was on Blu, and there could certainly be more extras, but it's a no-brainer for me.

Made in USA - Haven't seen this yet, but pretty sure I won't like it, based on my past experience with Godard.

Repulsion - Polanski and Denueve commentary? Sold. I like The Tenant a little more, but yeah, I'll buy this.

No sign yet of #482, or an Eclipse set.

While I kind of agree with you, this description at Criterion:

quote:

Like a Looney Tunes rendition of The Big Sleep gone New Wave, this chaotic crime thriller and acidly funny critique of consumerism features Anna Karina as the most brightly dressed private investigator in film history, searching for a former lover who might have been assassinated.
makes me really want to see it. If Godard integrated his critique of consumerism into the actual plot, as opposed to having it be a slew of quotations from his characters, it could be really cool. Then again, cool concepts are what make me keep watching Godard despite my very mixed reactions to his films.

Gotta be honest with you. Next to Petit Soldat, it's the most boring Godard film I've watched from the 60's. It's not as zany and out there to me as Pierrot or Alphaville. The movie looks great but it really feels like Godard is half asleep behind the camera, or atleast behind the idea of the movie.

- New and improved English subtitle translation

I like Criterion a lot, but their descriptions of what a movie criticizes and whatnot always paint a picture of the movie being far smarter than it is.
