Actually, if I try to get to the ctrl+alt+del menu, it just gives me a black screen - and it stays there until I hit esc. Also, I CAN open up new windows, it just doesn't show them - if I have the gadgets window open and click on "Find New Gadgets" - it opens the window and causes the gadget window to lose focus, but it doesn't show me the new window.

Yeah that loving sucks. I'm not impressed at all.

Newegg has a pretty decent looking pre-sale for 7. They also appear to have the Vista for system builders with windows 7 upgrade coupons too.

As soon as my UPS kicks in my windows goes to sleep. I've disabled all sleep options from the power settings but it still does it. Taskbar says that the battery is at 100% and the UPS is still pretty new.

Are there any special options for sleep? It wouldn't bother me so much if my monitors turned on every time but that happens pretty randomly.

Also I can't seem to find software for this APC that works on windows 7.

Which APC is it? I just bought the ES 750 and the newest PowerChute Personal Edition works just fine on this system. Installing and configuring said program will probably also help your sleep issue.

See, I don't want the upgrade because I want to be able to load my system from a USB drive and a fresh hard drive. The upgrades cannot do that which makes them useless for me even though I do actually own 6 copies of Vista.

Installed Win7 64-bit in early May when the RC was released, ver 7100. Things have been running fine for a while... until the last day or so.

I noticed yesterday that when I'd download something with Firefox, watched the whole download meter run through and it'd complete, but the "open" and "open file location" were greyed out and I couldn't locate it. Upgraded to Firefox 3.5, problem fixed and I can download files again and they show up...

Tried downloading a few things today and I notice when the download completes, the desktop isn't refreshed and I only have the filename.part on there, I have to hit F5 to refresh the desktop to see the file. Two zip files I downloaded were empty. Any exe's I've downloaded all say they're not a valid win32 application.

I've also noticed that if I try to launch Bittorrent it says the file is not a valid torrent on anything I try to use it with.

I'm also having a weird quirk with the Zune software (I can download things with my Zune Pass, but if I try to buy anything, it refuses to download it and throws me a yellow exclamation point.) but that's probably something else entirely.

Any suggestions?

So I have been using W7 since before the official Beta, I am running 7100 now and for the most part things are running really well with just a few hiccups.

Every once in a while my internet will just cut out, I will still have access to my network but there will be a little ! next to the signal strength. This doesn't happen on any other computer in the apt.

I want to use windows backup to backup my pictures, music and documents. I configured it to look for that stuff on its own and hooked up my external hard drive. It successfully completed it once and ever since it get hung up about ten minutes in, will not do anything. I have tried reformatting the drive, I even used it to back up all my settings and documents (not using windows backup) when I reformatted the computer for 7100 and it worked fine.

This might be a FF3 problem but ever since I downloaded the latest version it crashes pretty regularly. Once it crashed when trying to go to myspace, another time when I tried to navigate to space.com from my RSS feed. Sometimes it just does it when I am reading something on the web, it is weird and annoying.

Other than that things have been going well, being poor I will not be able to purchase W7 when it comes out and am not looking forward to going back to Vista (its not that I don't like Vista, I love Vista, W7 is just so much better).

Before using W7 I was using SyncToy to back up files (photos as I take them and categorize them) and echo the changes onto my external HD. Is there anything similar to this on W7?

Go to the folder's properties, advanced, uncheck encrypt.

Don't know why it got encrypted but its a really minor issue. Did it happen randomly or during an update to Win7?

Edit: ^^^^^ I didn't think SyncToy was particularly OS dependent. Regardless, it works fine for me too.

Can I pin a specific folder to the taskbar somehow?

When I drag the folder to there it just becomes the windows explorer one.

Edit: Oh, it goes to a list on the right click menu... not quite optimal but okay...

Infact there is long list of frequent folders, can I get rid of those somehow?

For anyone using XP Mode, I did find a nice little feature I hadn't really thought about before. For whatever reason, I was unable to get a shortcut to the Remote Desktop Client to show up in the Virtual XP Application directory on the Win7 side (among other programs that just wouldn't show up). What I ended up doing was adding a shortcut to the Task Manager (for other reasons, like when a program freezes and it won't close, it's nice to be able to kill it). And then I remembered that Task Manager also has a Run box built-in... so basically if you add a shortcut to Task Manager, you can run any application without having to rely on it showing up in the Virtual XP Apps directory.

I'm thinking of preordering for the 50% off.

Can someone tell me which Win7 editions will have tablet support (ink recognition, etc)? I googled and googled and can find no answer. MS's edition comparison doesn't mention it. IIRC Vista required Professional at the least for tablet features.

And can someone comment on how well XP apps are supported without the XP VM? I'm assuming that it still has some basic compatibility (the way XP has for Win2000 and Win9X programs), just not the 100% compatibility provided by the VM. Is that right?

Edit: can someone confirm that the "50% off preorder upgrade" works for XP-->Win7? It's just that I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but here. I don't want to buy it and find out it needs Vista.

Edit 2: snipped questions to things I found answers for elsewhere.

^^ Actually, I'm fairly sure the tablet features were in every version of Windows Vista; they were specifically trying to avoid what happened with Windows XP, where they had different versions of the OS depending on what hardware you had (with XP Tablet PC Edition and XP Media Center Edition).

Yes. The "minimum requirements" as Microsoft has them posted aren't actually the true minimums, I think they're trying to prevent the whole "Windows Vista Ready" fiasco when Vista first launched. I'm not sure on the 64-bit version, but the 32-bit really only needs a 6.5 gig partition (with a warning if it's smaller than 7.5), it's just that you won't be able to install anything else unless you have a bigger partition (or remove components of the OS). This will prevent people from having a "minimum" computer and then not being able to install any other software on it.

I'm fairly confident the 64-bit version will install to a 16 gig partition.

Suddenly now when I play a game windows 7 hardlocks on me, to the point where I can't move the mouse, no sound, no anything. So I reset and tried again, still did it after a while of playing. When I went to turn on the computer the 2nd time, it got to the login screen, I got a black screen with a mouse.

What do you think could be causing my computer to hardlock? I was running an old age of empires clone, so it's not over heating my CPU I think, plus it would restart if that's the case.

Can I preorder Windows 7 now, get it when it comes out but just hold on to it until I build a new computer in Decemberish (cannibilizing only a few things like the case and PSU from my current box running Vista), and then install 7 on the new computer and just like pop in my Vista disk during installation? Or is what I just suggested terribly stupid and I should just wait and order an OEM 64-bit Windows 7 disk like I did for my current computer with Vista.
