My carpool buddy's 10th AE has recently started smoking. I am lightly familiar with Miata's, but don't know enough to know common places to check where it could be burning it off? didn't see any smoke as he drove off today, but it is apparently bad enough a coworker that managed to get behind us sent me a note saying it was smoking.

Common failure points? We'll have to drive it around tomorrow and see if we can identify specific symptoms to what causes it to smoke.

That's loving miserable. If you're going to get a supercharger, get the Rotrex from 949racing.

There's a very good reason why the supercharger section is essentially a running joke over at miataturbo.net

I know it's a few pages late, but I just read your post. It's exactly what I wanted to hear. I go through phases where I get really excited to buy a Miata and this one I'm on now is worse than all the others due to the dopeness of the recent generation. I had looked at NAs and NBs before, but had problems with finding good ones. Eventually I test drove one and although I liked it, decided to go with an 07 corrola with way less miles for about the same price. But now I can't help falling for the 08/09s. I'm going to go test drive one very soon. I just hope we can work out some a lease thats in my budget if I trade the corrola in. I paid 13 for the toyota, about $260 per month on the lease. With the options I want on the mx-5, it's going to get pricey. But a guy can dream, right?

I had something similar which turned out to be the upper passenger A-arm on it's way out. The bushing in it was cracked as all hell. Replaced with a junkyard part from a rear end collision car and all was well.

My symptom was a bit more specific though, clunking as that side went up or down. Happened more often in turns but also occurred going straight over speed bumps so it was easier for me to diagnose.

It'll be hard to tell without lifting the car and taking the wheel off to examine though.

I've been getting a quiet ticking (which speeds up with the engine, not the wheels) in my 04 MSM for a few days now. I want to say just general Miata sounds, but it's getting me all :tinfoil:. Is this a common noise, or should I fear dying in a fiery wreck?

Check your oil level, but generally all miatas have lifter tick.

My 95 does it, it's annoying as gently caress, but generally goes away as the engine warms up. I tried switching to 10W30 Mobile 1, and I think it helped a bit, but not much.

NBs and on don't. They went to solid lifters in those, so lifter tick is impossible. Threepac, you should definitely check your oil level though. Have you had low oil recently at all?

Really? Are you sure it's the lifters or could it be something else? I talked to a couple of Mazda mechanics when I was trying to diagnose ticking in my '99 and they said they'd never had anything but NAs that needed lifter work.

FWIW, when the '99 in question was ticking it was from a spun bearing :(

It's been ticking for at least the last 50k miles and the Blackstone analysis I ran on it at 95k came back all kinds of clean. I'm not worried :)

It's not loud enough to worry about at all, anyway, it's just quite audible when you're underhood; after all the rest of the engine is pretty quiet.

Not if you have valve shims that are out of spec. I need to do the ones on my '99 head - they make quite a racket when they warm up.

Can you expand on this? I have very little technical know how, the reason I was going for the supercharger Vs the turbo was the idea that I wanted to keep the engine characteristics of the car and the garage I linked has probably the best reputation in the UK for MX5's.

Checking in as a future (hope to be waaaay in the future) Miata owner. A family member told me he put me in his will for one of his, a low production # color, early version. What impresses him most about his are ease of working on them, and driving manners. They just seem like great cars.

Well im not very technical minded so would be letting performance5 install it anyway, and I have never heard of Rotrex before you mentioned them where as the JRSC is mentioned all over the shop in M45 and the Eaton MP62 terms when it comes to the UK mx5 forums.

Me too, my engine sounds like a diesel after warming up. It doesn't help there's probably a heat shield or two that's rattling around too.
My car is so awesome that some idiot thought I was turbo when I started it up because of the very slight squeak (I guess they thought it was a BOV of some sort?) coming from one of the belts or pulleys.

I just got my 37500 mile service on it - the oil levels seem to be fine. Since IOwnCalculus' NB seems to have a similar problem, and his car hasn't blown up yet, I'm gonna assume that it's not too serious. Of course, if it gets really loud I'll take it in, but it is a really quiet noise.

On another note, it backfires at least once a week (I drive ~250 miles a week), which seems a little frequent for an 04 car. Has anyone else experienced this in their MSMs?

Tire question: I've never bought tires before, and I need something that isn't too expensive, but I don't really want to get lovely tires, either. I don't autocross or anything near racing, but I'd still like a set that performs well under normal/spirited driving situations, and won't kill me in the rain. If I want to drive in the winter I will probably get a dedicated set. Only other criteria is that I'd like something with some nice white lettering on the walls, just cause I think it'd look nice with the car. Is there something out there like that for maybe 50-75 dollars a tire?

On a Miata? Aren't all factory 14" Miata tires 185/60-14?

I run 195/60-14 on mine with no problems other than the slightly ridiculous sidewall side, ha.

Do Bridgestone still do the RE750? I've been fairly happy with those on our Miata. Great in the wet.

NM - they do RE960AS for $68 a corner. Buy those now. The best all-season performance tyre on the market right now, bar none.

Does anyone have a link on how to change a starter motor on a 2000 Mx5? I've got a replacement motor but I can't even get to the bolts to remove it, even if I could there's nowhere near enough room to undo them.

Going from memory here -

GET THE MIATA AS HIGH AS YOU CAN on jackstands. Make sure you disconnect the battery.

Get about 3 feet worth of socket extensions and a good wobble joint. If you have an impact gun, use it. IIRC, 10mm or 12mm for the motor side electrical bolts and bracket, 14mm for the bellhousing. Remove the passenger front wheel to gain access to the electrical connectors.

With the wobble joint and extensions, you'll be able to hit the top and bottom bolts for the start from the gap between the transmission and passenger side of the tunnel.

It's not too bad once you get at it - I had to use 3-4 6 inch 3/8th extensions to reach (not very good for transmitting torque with a battery powered impact gun), and ended up having to swap the starter 3 times. Once you get the hang of it, it's only an hour job.

Which comes to another protip: On my dad's 96, the reman starter we got had the wrong threadpitch for the bellhousing bolts (which I figured out after I had already spent an hour positioning and cursing the bolt that wasn't threading). Replaced that, same threadpitch. Snagged one for a Ford Escort GT (same engine) and the bolts fit.

My 2006 has sinusoidal vibrations I can feel through the wheel when I'm traveling between 63 and 70 MPH. This was caused by an accident two years ago where I lost control on a slick entrance ramp and went over the curb. I've had all four wheels replaced since then. What are likely causes of this type of accident-induced vibration?
