Question: I registered with Microsoft for access to a product key for the release candidate. I upgraded from x86 vista home premium to x86 7 home premium, but the key doesn't work. I checked, and I installed the RTM version instead of the release candidate. I thought these were the same actual version, but I guess I was wrong about that. Am I now completely screwed?

I think you are pretty confused... RTM is not a release candidate. RTM is the final version so it will need a different product key purchased in a retail box. The key you have is for RC so you will need to reinstall RC over your current install.

I just realized that if I type in nothing at the request screen for the product key, it will let me go through for the time being. That's all I needed to see -- I'll just reinstall with the RC in the morning. Thanks!

Thanks! or you can use the rtm for up to 120 days without a key with the rearm trick, more than enough time to buy a key later

The icon that shows Internet Access on my taskbar always seems to have the red cross on it even though I'm connected to it. The connection itself is working fine, but it just annoys me. It seemed to start happening when I bridged the LAN/wireless connections on this PC. Any ideas?

So I sent this to a friend who worked specifically on this feature at MS and he tested it real quick and it is indeed a bug with bridging a LAN/wireless connection. He submitted the bug but until it gets patched, you will probably have to deal with the icon being messed up.

I can't confirm it for XP, but my brother just got a laptop with Vista on it and he had to add a password to his login on his PC with Win7 in order to access its shares with Vista. (Also, they had to be in the same workgroup, but that's normal for pre-7.)

Did you share a folder on each to make sure the proper firewall exceptions have been made? Can you ping each system from the other? Networking should work nearly same in 2k/xp/vista/win7/mac/linux. Windows usually has default policies requiring a password, and the firewall set to keep those ports closed. Making sure to have a password set and sharing a folder fixes that right up.

Is there a way to make Windows Media Player look like it did in Vista? When it opens now it's just a window with the video display huge and the controls autohiding. I would like it to open with the playlist sidebar always open and with all the menus (File, edit, etc.) listed at the top.

Does anyone know if 'windows media player network sharing service' is used for anything if I never use windows media player? This service keeps popping up in my list and will randomly shoot my cpu usage up to ~40% usage for a second every few minutes or so. I eventually just set it to disabled because I would stop it and it would just restart itself a few minutes later. It's rather annoying.

Make sure that the accounts you are using both have the same name AND the same password. If you choose to have a blank password then Windows XP and upwards will not let you access it over a network.

It's asking for a username/password of an account on the system you are trying to access. It's basically logging into the remote system to gain access to files/resources. So put in the name AND PASSWORD of an account on the XP system that has appropriate access (Share access and NTFS access). If the account you are trying to "log in" with doesn't have a password, then create one. Blank Password = No Access. If you don't know where to find where to make accounts at in XP, open Control Panel and look for something that looks like "User Accounts" or something. I usually right-click My Computer and click "Manage", but that type of interface won't let you work with users if you are using XP Home.

Here's something I can't figure out, and this has been since the RC. I have an Asus EeePC. It has a webcam and the drivers for it are installed. However, I can't find a way actually use the webcam. If I go under the Devices panel, it's there, but I can't turn the cam on. I recall with XP, it showed up as a device under 'My Computer' and you could turn it on and take pictures. If I use an app that uses a webcam like MSN Messenger, I can turn it on and use it with the chat, but I just want to use the cam by itself. Any ideas? I bet I'm overlooking something simple.

Try Network & Sharing centre > Change advanced network sharing. You can switch off passworded sharing plus some other stuff that might be hindering you.

I currently have a dual-boot system with Windows XP and Windows 7 RC. Since I never boot into XP any more (and because I need the hard disk space for more porn), how do I (cleanly) remove XP from the boot loader and the hard disk? My XP and 7 partitions are on the same drive, with XP first and 7 second. I want to turn the XP partition into an encrypted TrueCrypt partition, and I want to make sure doing that isn't going to destroy the MBR or wherever the boat loader lives these days. Eventually, I'm going to upgrade the RC to the final Windows 7, but at that point I'll likely get a new hard disk and avoid the dual-boot situation alltogether. (I also have a netbook where I want to get rid of XP, but the setup is pretty much the same. Not going to put TrueCrypt on there though. Well, maybe, but not on the entire partition.) I tried looking for the procedure on the internets, but all I could find were people who want to remove Windows 7 and leave XP. (Further evidence that the internet is full of retards.)

I just downloaded/installed Windows 7 on my main PC. Everything's cool. I then took the CD and installed it on my laptop. Used the same key then forgot that I already used it. I typed in the CD key during installation but then chose not to activate cuz I realized my mistake afterwards. I'm sure I can get another key by downloading the French version of Windows 7 or something, right? Am I too late with putting a new key in, or am I hosed?

Well I've had windows 7 64bit for about a week now. The only drama I'm getting is a blue screen after the PC goes into sleep mode. Disabled sleep mode and I'm good to go again.. One other cool thing I've found is the gadgets. I could see some cool potential use of these, particularly for dual monitor stuff. A question though, are there any awesome calendar like gadgets where I could pencil in my events, to do's etc? It would be cool to have a desktop based to do/calendar/event management/reminder type tool. Any ideas guys?

Obviously you lose the RC keys, but I think you should still get 4 keys. 1 x64, 1 x86, and one of each in "French". Except that each of those keys will work perfectly fine in any language and with both x64 and x86.
