This is generally called "hardcore," and it's what those gay rear end kandy kids listen to (you don't want to be one of them, do you). This is definitely not trance, drum n bass, or jungle, and pretty much everyone else in the electronic music scene hates this. That aside, look up Darren Styles, Hixxy, Scott Brown, Mark Breeze, Dougal, Gammer, and be sure to check out the di.fm Hardcore station. insomne fucked around with this message at 05:32 on Sep 10, 2009 |

Sad Mammal posted:I've been listening to a lot of noise and drone recently and my favorite track far and away has been Birchville Cat Motel's Beautiful Speck Triumph (shifts into high gear at around the 13-minute mark). I've been trying to find something in noise and/or drone that comes close to achieving that same kind of gorgeous sound, something that I can really only describe as "epic" and "beautiful". The closest I've come to it is Small Christian Victories by the same artist (no link, unfortunately). Any suggestions? I just had to say that I loving love Birchville Cat Motel and that Campbell Kneale (who was BCM) has a new band. Well, really it's just him this time around as well, but you should check it out if you haven't already. It's called Our Love Will Destroy The World and it's not very dissimilar to BCM. Another band that you might like is Bristols gently caress Buttons. Check out the song "Sweet Love For Planet Earth".

The Dentist posted:I just listened every Radiohead cd in chronological order. I've been a fan since OK Computer. I know that it's probably the most common and laughable occurrence for someone to ask for music that "sounds like Radiohead" when their influence on today's music is so huge. What I'm looking for, mostly out of desperation, is something that will blow my mind the way they did/do. I don't want to be that guy who listens to Radiohead all day. Because, right now, I AM that guy. I'm sorry. I know there's more out there. I'll definitely echo the guy that said Cursive. Listen to their first couple albums. Also listen to Friend and Foe by Menomena. Perhaps you should give The Mars Volta a listen if you haven't already? In addition here's a few more: UUVVWWZZ S/T (don't let the dumb band name throw you off; they're loving awesome and remind me a bit of Deerhoof), Pinback, and Tub Ring - hugely influenced by Mike Patton's work and they do some pretty good stuff. Is this a decent recommendation or am I completely off?

I recently started listening to this Japanese surf rock band Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys, the album 'This is Takeshi Terauchi' to be specific. It is really cool and was wondering where else I can go for this sort of sound. I've heard the Ventures before but I seem to prefer Terauchi with that sort of off-kilter haunted house type vibe I get. Any ideas?

That's not to say that nobody else unknowingly did anything similar. From Sweden, The Spotnicks' guitar can sometimes be unbearably tinny but at their best they're great. And as far as off-kilter and moody tones go, The Tornados (not Tornadoes) from GB are untouchable, and it's worth checking out the rest of Joe Meek produced instrumentals Also, weirdo exotica/jazz musician Kai Winding did a surf album called "!!!MORE!!!" (which from what I understand he also released not as a surf album with identical music), which might fill the gap. Also there's two compilations called "surfbeat behind the iron curtain" that have some Takeshi-type stuff. Of course, they also have Takeshi on it.

Top 40 pop/rock that never makes it out of the country, and is often uninteresting: Florent Pagny, David Halliday (the son of johnny), Axel Bauer, Calogero, Pascal Obispo, Zazie, Raphael, Téléphone I've never listened to her apart from her videos, but Mylène Farmer is very well known. Limp Bizkit sounding bands that IIRC sing in french: Pleymo, Watcha. The biggest rap guys are NTM and IAM (also 113). For other albums check out the side-projects. My housing cooperative is going to throw a socialism-themed party. We're going to make White Russians, dress up as famous socialists (one of my roommates will be Helen Keller), give speeches, by most importantly, we're trying to get everyone to shake their asses and dance! Each of us is going to produce a play list of about ten songs, and so far I've only thought of one really on topic (and danceable) song: International Noise Conspiracy's "Capitalism Stole my Virginity." They have some other danceable songs, and would mesh well with one other stuff that I would like people to dance to, like Broken Social Scene's "7/4 Shoreline," but I can't think of any other good stuff yet. Besides trying to find dance remixes of various national anthems etc. Help? edit: I found a terrible techno version of L'Internationale: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxdfzP05jR4. I will probably not play this. edit II: If we can get the projector to work during the party: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxMUZZ3jx-g, 'cause, drat. I'm not sure if this style has a name exactly (electropop maybe?) but it's the kind of retro-ish europop stuff that's been dominating electronic top 40s for the past couple years, just most of it has singing and this one happens to be instrumental. Try MGMT, Royksopp, Klaxons, Cut Copy, The Whip, Lady GaGa, Hot Chip and Calvin Harris. kundalini rinsing fucked around with this message at 23:28 on Sep 17, 2009 |
