A much easier way to get that ring, besides starting as a Royal, is to give the Brass Telescope to the "shiny twinkly" crow in 4-1.

Yeah, but you have to fight your way past some of the most annoying enemies in the entire game, plus a boss to get to it.

Sure, I just find him to be a particularly boring character. He never does or says anything interesting. Plus, if you're not planning on fighting Lucan to leave Shrouded Hills, there's no real need to take Sogg unless you're playing a very weak character who can't survive the random wilderness encounters between Shrouded Hills and Dernholm/Black Root.

Also, Sogg, like Mutt, becomes so good at combat that the game can get boring real quick.

You don't have to fight a boss, and skeletons are a cake walk once you get a blunt weapon.

When you enter the gateway that leads to Vanguard, turn left down the tunnel (raise your shield because there's an arrow trap) and head upstairs. After you dispatch the guys up there, head towards the other tower that has a skeleton archer on it; you'll enter at the bottom. Once you get to the top of those stairs, head out the door that the skeleton was guarding and around the path.

"Olden days" stories aside, if someone suggests consulting a guide before starting a game, they're probably right.
I find using guides and things like gamefaqs distasteful. It becomes less about fun and more about data entry with a colorful UI. I don't like scrolling past major game spoilers on accident or inadvertently told who the last boss is by an overeager guide writer. I don't like feeling like I was so dumb at my choice of entertainment that I had to cheat to enjoy myself.

That is the purpose of this thread. You are here to tell me things I should know about a game for the express purpose of letting me avoid going to gamefaqs. There are very few games where "Just look up a guide" is preferable to "This game is pretty complex but if you just remember these few things you'll be ok." Back when I was a lurker I got through Persona 3 without opening up gamefaqs, mostly through comments people have posted here and that's one of the most complicated guide-worthy games I've played. Of course my Persona characters could probably be much more powerful if I used gamefaqs to min-max everything and figure out the most perfect fusions but just having a bit of an advantage through this thread is good enough for me.

Guide Dang It

Persona 3 does not have any moments where using a guide is more or less mandatory for continuing the game, yet some games (including Persona 4) do. Recommending guides in these moments can't be blamed, because their enjoyment could be severely hampered if they don't consult one.

In the case of Persona 4, there's been several people who were completely oblivious to the fact that there was yet another dungeon and a "true ending." The specific set of events you must do to unlock are almost impossible to find without a guide or someone telling you what to do.

I agree with you. I think those guide-dang-it moments are incredibly annoying. That's why, when someone posts "I need tips for Persona 4" you posts "Make sure you follow these instructions to the letter or you cannot get the real ending: blah blah blah" instead of "Go to gamefaqs." My point is, these guide-dang-it moments are usually few and far between in any one particular game, and can be better solved through a short post rather than the huge amount of superfluous information in a walkthrough.

edit: A lot of the entries on that page are for like secret extras, stuff that's supposed to sell guides, not stuff that's crucial to getting through the game. The classic example is the incredibly brokenly powerful spear in FF12 that will only be picked up by people who are actively reading walkthroughs. I don't really mind not getting the spear because I figured its just a reward for people who enjoy following walkthroughs to the letter. My reward for not reading the guide is that I get to have more fun than the walkthru-readers.

You will be hard pressed for ammo in the beginning, but should have plenty of it by the midpoint (aka the return to the mansion with different enemies inside, you'll know what I mean when you get there). The game has Crimson Heads, aka zombies that you kill come back after a certain amount of time as half-licker looking zombies that are stronger, hit faster, and are generally a lot harder to kill. The only way to prevent a dead zombie from turning into a Crimson head is to burn them. Now, you can burn more than one at a time as long as they're dead next to each other, so in the case that you absolutely have to do it, this is the preferred way. However, you can go through the entire game without almost ever having to burn zombies, and having to stick gasoline in your already limited inventory space.

How can you do this? Simple. Kill only zombies in puzzle rooms/puzzle item rooms. As you make your way through your mansion, there will be many little side-rooms you will only have to go through once to grab an item, or solve a puzzle. Feel free to kill zombies in here with impunity, as you'll never have to go back to those rooms, and subsequently never have to kill a Crimson Head. In hallways, zombies are easily dodged. Even if your reflexes are slow, you can wait for a zombie to get close to you while you AIM downwards, and shoot him once in the leg, which will always stun him for just long enough for you to run right around him. (make sure you don't run into him, but around, so his lunge towards you misses) For areas/hallways with lots of zombies, this is what your quick kill items are for. Killing a zombie with a quick kill item will usually not have that zombie turn into a Crimson Head (at least with Chris), due to their heads blowing up. A lack of a head or fire will ensure a zombie will not come back as a Crimson Head.

Using these simple tactics will leave you with 120/50+ pistol bullets and 50+ shotgun rounds by the aforementioned main return to the mansion. As a sidenote, there will be a very used hallway that will at one point have 4/5 zombies coming in through a window. Use your shotgun here and try to drop them all in one spot, for an easy 1 gasoline burn fire cleansing.

As far as individual enemy tactics, zombies should always be dispatched with your pistol, and Crimson Heads (you'll have to fight at least one as a "boss battle" of sorts) fall to the shotgun. Hunters are also dispatched with a shotgun, or grenade rounds. Be especially careful with these guys as they CAN drop you in 2-3 hits. Tarantulas can often be shot off-screen, and using the pistol you can score critical hits in their front head area and drop them in one shot. They're also not particularly threatening enemies despite their appearance, so unless they're right next to you and attacking (usually when you encounter them they are still, and if shot offscreen, they sometimes won't come towards you) don't use the shotgun.

EDIT

Jill also has the 'easier' game, in that she can take out one boss by never really having to fight, and gets one more weapon than Chris, but Chris gets a stronger version of a weapon Jill gets (IIRC) and has more inventory slots, not to mention a better quick-kill, evening them out. I found Chris' game to be a bit more entertaining, but to a NEW player, Jill's would be a bit easier. Also, the quick kill I'm referring to is hitting a button when a zombie grabs you to have your character instantly dispatch them.

The campaign is really just a training ground for multiplayer, but the campaign is really well done and the characters are funny so it's worth playing through.

There's really not much to it beyond that. The game is pretty straightforward. You should usually have something explosive for your secondary equipment, though, as the power tool is pretty crappy in campaign.

To add/clarify 'artillary barrage thing': The MRTR-5 is your best friend. Point at the bad thing + hold the trigger for several seconds = no more bad thing. The only reason I put it down was when the mission required I use a different support tool or when temporarily fixing vehicles. This also frees up your second weapon slot (if following the above recommendation of carrying 'something explosive') for more varied weapon choices.

Hunting down new weapons/gold earns you nothing. Nothing but bragging rights (and token achievements/trophies).

That said, if you want a new/different gun, look at your map and just head towards the nearest X marked on it. Note: These weapons are rarely unattended, so watch out before running into town.

Your team will teleport to your side regardless of where you are, and you can actually see it happen when you out maneuver them and even when jumping in vehicles. Always fun to jump in a 3-seater, tear off and watch the fourth member run/teleport after you.

Welp that was fast, thanks!

- You probably stopped reading this thread but if you really want to cheese most of the game, breed a Grizzly early on. If I recall you need a beast family monster as your first monster and a demon as your second monster. This motherfucker will tear poo poo up.

- I'd go with a two physical monsters and a spellcaster/healer hybrid and you'll do fine for most of the game.

- Eventually as you unlock almost all the worlds, you'll want to start breeding more monsters and getting some of the better monsters, but I wouldn't worry about it until you're far enough in the story and get access to better worlds/monsters.

- Monsters that are the result of breeding will gain huge stats advantages over wild versions of the same as they gain stat modifiers from the parents as well as inherit certain skills that are passed down. This is how you can pretty much give any monster any spell in the game.

- There is no shame in breeding your whole current team at the same time and getting fresh new level 1 monsters in your party. Because of the above tip, it'll be very easy to level them up (except if they are the best monster of their family or if they are of the ??? family) and you'll be back up to where you were in no time. Well-bred monsters will be able to handle worlds beyond their level range before non-bred monsters ever will.

- Another way of doing things is to only breed 2 monsters from your party and keep a third one to boost your baby monsters in high-level zones. A fast monster is ideal, but anyone who can one-shot three monsters at once (usually with a spell) is good for this.

- Ultimately it doesn't matter because you have a huge farm where you can leave up to about 40 monsters at any time, kind of like Bill's PC in Pokemon. 20 of those will be "awake" and readily available while the other 20 sleep. Talking to the farmkeeper will let you switch those two at any time. Also keep in mind that the awake team will level up as time goes by but their wilderness rating will go up and their stats and spells won't be as nice as ones you've leveled yourself. However, if you're not going to use them, leaving monsters on the farm is a good way of passively training breeding-fodder.

- Keep visting the kingdom after every world is completed as it will expand and many more areas will become available and usually either contain treasure or something important.

- Keep TinyMedals as there is a collector for them who will give you tons of good poo poo for however many you turn in. He's located on the same tree altitude as the king's room and to the right.

It's been a long time but that's most of what I can remember. I used to play this game religiously when I was a kid and spent many, many days getting an awesome team. I wonder where my copy is, I kind of want to play now :3:

The controls are really weird, you basically have to treat Mio like she's a car--accelerate, turn, accelerate, and so on. Learn how to use it rather than messing with the control setup--the camera LOVES to switch views constantly on you, and if you're not driving, you'll end up running backwards a lot by accident, and probably getting whacked for it.

If you haven't played a Fatal Frame before, pay really close attention to the camera tutorial, and everything that happens in camera mode. If you just shoot randomly, you'll accomplish nothing, and timing is a big part of fighting well. You can use the right stick to move (slowly) in camera mode.

Max out the camera's basic functions before you start toying with the power-up lenses--you won't have enough ammo for them for a long time, and good basic camera poo poo is far more essential. Just spread the points out and fill them up mostly evenly. After that, the Slow lens is amazingly useful, and the Blast and Track ones are pretty good too.

Take whatever snapshots of random ghosts you can to fill out the easier stuff in the album, but don't stress over it, you have to play it a few times to get all of them anyhow.

If I'm playing as a tech, I usually have all those items by the time I run into Sebastian. And someone like Loghaire or Chukka or Magnus can use that axe a lot better than Sebastian can. I'm not disagreeing that he's a good character, it's just that I'm usually pretty well-set by the time he shows up, and I've never really seen many incentives to taking him. If I can make every item he has, and if I have other melee companions that are a higher level than him, it's hard to justify making room for him in the party.

However, even after all the time I've spent playing Arcanum, I'm still a little shaky on precisely how much the magic/tech slider affects combat effectiveness. So, if Sebastian gets crazy combat bonuses to the charged axe for being a tech character, bonuses that "neutral" characters like Loghaire and Chukka don't get, then you are probably right. But I can't say I've ever really noticed a difference.

Nothing carries over and the second one is quite superior to the first. Unless you have a lot of spare time with three friends you can skip the first one and just watch Deadpool's comments on youtube.

Always have Deadpool as player one for some really good conversations.
Use fusions as often as you can (they recharge quicker than you think).
Thor's hammer of something-or-another attack is completely broken after the first few levels, use him if you like the character but be aware that he literally breaks the difficulty curve, some bosses take mere seconds with him compared to minutes with anyone else.
Try to keep a varied team with regards to fusion types, it sucks to realize that your team only has clearing type fusions available when you're fighting a single powerful boss.

Oh, and play it with three friends if you can, it's a lot of fun that way and kinda slow with only two people (although not bad.)
